Although it has been over fifty years since the world learned of the horrors committed by the Nazis against those considered "undesirable", many attitudes that fostered the "Holocaust" are still with us. Prejudice and discrimination arc a part of the social fabric of our lives. This study examined how teachers in Indiana implemented the 1995 Indiana Concurrent resolution on teaching about the Holocaust, specifically in middle schools/junior high and high schools. Selected teachers were those cunently in reading/language arts and social studies from grades 6-12, since these grades and subject areas are where Holocaust study typically occurs. A survey was …

This study was designed as a qualitative investigation of the preparation of physical education teachers within two selected teacher education programs in the United States and Russia. The two institutions under study were Tambov State University from Russia and Indiana State University from the United States of America. The characteristics under investigation included the following elements of professional preparation programs: admission requirements, curriculum content, student teaching experiences, and requirements for licensure and accreditation. This thesis is an analysis of survey research data evaluating Journeys, a place-based environmental education teacher inservice training program developed and administered by Teton Science School. Information gleaned from stakeholder interviews was used to develop the specific evaluation questions. A self-administered mail survey was then sent to all teachers known to have received Journeys training.

Nearly all trained teachers go on to use Journeys with their classes, and show a commitment to making Journeys a permanent part of their classroom. Teachers generally agreed that their involvement with Journeys has had positive effects on their teaching behaviors and attitudes towards teaching. …

Maine’s deployment of the Comprehensive School Reform Demonstration (CSRD) program has been substantially different from that of other states. It has included the addition of several parameters and operating requirements that have made the school change process that was prompted by CSRD in that state particularly promising and worthy of study (Hamann et al., 2001). Maine’s adaptation of the CSRD framework has led to the adoption of school portfolios at 11 high schools. The state urged schools to adopt this measure in addition to focusing all of its comparatively modest CSRD allocation at the high school level and assuring further …

This paper describes insights related to the potential use of on-line training modules with elementary education pre-service teachers for enhancing their experience and background in mathematical modeling. These insights resulted from a field test of a new online learning prototype developed within a National Science Foundation Proof-of-Concept project. The insights listed in the paper are further supported by two URL addresses that link to detailed notes, background documents, and various demonstration pieces.

In response to inadequate local resources (as subjectively defined) in both sending and receiving communities and in response to related local racial/ethnic discriminations, transnational families engage in transnational economic, cultural, and psychological risk-minimization strategies— the substance of a “transnationalism from below” (Smith and Guarnizo 1998)—that are discordant with the enculturative presumptions of schooling. A special type of transnational migrant described here—the sojourner student—is thus vulnerable not only to (a) the original migration-inducing conditions and (b) the limitations of opportunity in the receiving community, but also (c) to the contradictions between their response strategy and the standard suppositions of schooling. The effect of space and furnishings, as measured by the Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale – Revised (ECERS-R), on the School Readiness Composite (SRC) of the Bracken Basic Concept Scale –Revised (BBCS-R) was investigated. The data analyzed was collected as part of the West Virginia Educare Initiative and included the SRC from 65 preschool students, ranging in age from 2 years, 6 months to 5 years, 0 months. The first subtest score on the ECERS-R, space and furnishings, was also calculated for each child’s classroom. The purpose of the current study was to explore the relationship between language and academic readiness. The current study included 56 preschool children. Specifically, 9 two year olds participated, 18 three year olds participated, 21 four year olds, and 8 five year olds participated. Twenty- three were female and twenty-three were male. Each child was administered the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT III), followed by both the School Readiness Composite (SRC) of the Bracken Basic Concept Scale – Revised or BBCS-R.
