Guided by the central question "How do professional development opportunities regarding the use of running records effect the thinking and practice of veteran teachers ?", this study investigated the way in which eight highly experienced literacy teachers learned to use formative assessment to guide instruction of a student at risk of failure in reading. From the most veteran teacher with thirty-three years to the "baby" with fifteen years of service to children, they represented a seasoned group of early childhood professionals willing to grapple with formative assessment, a concept for which all admitted they had been ill-prepared. The purpose of this study was to determine the attitudes and practices of school board presidents in Nebraska pertaining to Internet use policy-making and its implications on health education. This study utilized a mailed written survey. The data indicated that public school policy makers have significantly different perceptions of health education than of specific selected health education components, i.e., they are not very concerned about access to Internet health education information in general, but they are very concerned about specific areas of health education. Staff development training was integrated with peer sharing and professional renewal during the 1999-2000 school year at Tri-County Child and Family Development Council, Inc. in Waterloo, Iowa. In this training program, at each monthly meeting teaching teams made presentations on educational topics. A learning material was constructed during the workshop; the game or toy could be used in the teacher's classroom. While literacy activities for young children was a suggested theme, presenters were allowed to present on a topic of personal interest or commitment. This literature review addresses the process teachers go through in order to change their instructional practices in math. The purpose of this review is to compare traditional math practices with practices being advocated by reform initiatives, to look at hurdles preventing teachers from adapting these reforms, and share suggestions for removing these hurdles to allow a smoother change process for teachers.

The sources referenced come from research studies involving classroom practices and professional development programs, journal articles related to the math reform movement, and books on the same topic. They date from 1989 to 2000.

This paper explores the ramifications of using web technology in teaching technology management courses, computer-based modeling and simulation courses in particular. The emphasis is on what works, but disappointments are also mentioned. Web technology is being used to supplant lectures with self-paced materials and lab exercises that enable students to take courses remotely and asynchronously. Web-based exams are also discussed.

Interfacing An 8085-Based Microcontroller: A Practical Approach To Developing Computer Applications Skills, Ahmad Zagari, Jien-Ren Li

In the Electronics Technology course – EE 445, students were directed to construct, troubleshoot, and interface an 8085-based microcontroller in order to control electromechanical circuits. This microprocessor, using Intel 8085A processor, was assembled from components and was interfaced to take full control of a stepper motor’s motion. In addition, the microprocessor’s application to generate and measure waveforms was examined. This manuscript attempts to describe the basic architecture of a microcontroller system, and examine its interfacing techniques as well as its applications in providing communication to the outside world.

The purpose of this document is to provide principles to guide the integration of service-learning into the preservice teacher education curriculum. The ten principles included here were developed by a group of over 80 teacher educators and service-learning practitioners from all regions of the U.S. who contributed their ideas and feedback in order to achieve consensus. (Contributors are listed in Appendix B). These principles of good practice can be used by teacher educators to design and assess their service-teaming activities, and by policy makers to guide decisions regarding resource allocation and program development.

The primary purpose of this research was to evaluate the efficacy of the distance learning Commonwealth Special Education Endorsement Program (CSEEP) delivered by Old Dominion University. The CSEEP program was designed to address economic and geographic barriers confronting teachers seeking to complete requirements for endorsement in special education, improve the quality of education teachers, help reduce the shortage of fully licensed special education teachers, and increase teacher retention in special education.

This essay describes a taxonomy of higher-level learning that consists of six kinds of learning: foundational knowledge, application, integration, the human dimension, motivation, and learning how to learn. Rethinking the undergraduate experience at research universities is a necessary goal for the new millennium according to the Boyer Commission on Educating Undergraduates (1998). Faculty development efforts provide a starting place for a transformation of the traditional teaching-learning model. This essay describes the faculty development support structure included in a FIPSE sponsored program to promote learning by inquiry. The Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities (CURO) at the University of Georgia meshes teaching and research so that undergraduate students become participants in the strengths of a research university by becoming part of a community of learners.
