The Professional Development Of Beginning Teachers Of Primary Mathematics, Robert Leonard Sparrow
The Professional Development Of Beginning Teachers Of Primary Mathematics, Robert Leonard Sparrow
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Recent documents have recommended a style of teaching for primary classrooms that favours a constructivist viewpoint of learning. The actuality of mathematics classrooms is different from this vision. Newly trained teachers while exposed to, and expounding, a constructivist philosophy are, in many cases, implementing a more traditional, teacher-centred approach to classroom practice. The purpose of this study was twofold: to investigate factors which influence the pedagogical practices and beliefs of beginning teachers of mathematics in primary classrooms and secondly to evaluate a professional development support model for beginning primary mathematics teachers. A model for professional development and support of beginning …

Educational Research Abstracts, G. Bass Jr.
Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations
Editors' Note: As noted in previous issues of the Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations, the purpose of this Educational Research Abstract section is to present current published research on issues relevant to math and science teaching at both the K-12 and college levels. Because educational research articles are published in so many different academic journals, it is a rare public school teacher or college professor who reads all the recent published reports on a particular instructional technique or curricular advancement. Indeed, the uniqueness of various pedagogical strategies has been tacitly acknowledged by the creation of individual journals dedicated …

A Challenge To All: Raising The Participation And Success Of Women And Minorities In Mathematics, Science, And Technlogy, Mark R. Warner, Loren D. Pitt
Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations
This issue of our journal is the product of a Virginia Mathematics and Science Coalition (VMSC) conference titled, "Programs That Work" and held in March, 2000 on the issues of raising both the levels of success and the levels of participation of women and minorities in mathematics, science, and technology. Traditionally, these two groups have had low rates of participation in these subjects, and we believe this situation can and must be changed. The conference was to Coalition's first direct assault on the problem.

Training Training-Room Skills, Alan Waters, Maria Luz C. Vilches
Training Training-Room Skills, Alan Waters, Maria Luz C. Vilches
English Faculty Publications
A process-oriented approach to training teachers in ELT teaching methods is nowadays commonplace. To operate such an approach, the teacher trainer needs to be able to handle the skills involved in, inter alia, introducing a teacher training session, conducting awareness-raising, providing input, setting up, monitoring and rounding off small-group activities, feeding back on participants’ ideas and concluding the session. In other words, just as the ELT teacher needs to master a repertoire of classroom skills for handling ELT activities, so the teacher trainer needs to acquire a knowledge of the training-room skills involved in such teacher training procedures Both classroom …
What Counts As Accountability? : Towards An Accountability Framework For The Pre-Primary, Lennie Barblett
What Counts As Accountability? : Towards An Accountability Framework For The Pre-Primary, Lennie Barblett
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Accountability in the pre-primary year has become a focus for attention as schools develop corporate school plans. Pre-primary teachers can no longer work in isolation and are required to implement the school development plan in order to account for their portion of the school's work. This study aimed to find out how pre-primary teachers accounted for their educational programs and what factors influenced their accountability notions and practices. The study conducted in Western Australia used an ecological theoretical framework. Data was collected using multi-modal techniques and analysed using an interpretive-constructivist approach. Three case studies, a questionnaire and focus groups of …

The purpose of the study was to determine if the delivery of an integrated agriculture and science curriculum to Agricultural Education MAT (Master of Arts in Teaching) pre-service teachers increased their desire and ability to integrate their own curriculum and collaborate with other teachers once they started teaching, and to identify social and cultural barriers in existence between secondary teachers in agriculture and science. The population for the treatment group consisted of all graduate students enrolled in the 1996-97 MAT Agricultural Education cohort at a west coast university. The control group consisted of the previous Jive Agricultural Education cohorts at the …
Understanding My Work : Reflections On Implementing A Season Of Sepep, Kevin Black
Understanding My Work : Reflections On Implementing A Season Of Sepep, Kevin Black
Theses : Honours
Implementing new curriculum models for the first time can be difficult for teachers, especially those recently graduated. This study captured some of these challenges and difficulties, and the substantial rewards, through recording the teacher's reactions and reflections as he implemented his first season of SEPEP. The perceptions of the students involved in the season were recorded as a way of validating the teacher's reflections. SEPEP is a student centered physical education program which seeks to capture the positive aspects of community sport, and allows students the opportunity to be involved as players, in team roles such as captain, coach and …
Understanding The Headteachers’ Role In Pakistan: Emerging Role Demands, Constraints And Choices, Muhammad Memon, Rana Nazir Ali, Tim Simkins, Viv Garret
Understanding The Headteachers’ Role In Pakistan: Emerging Role Demands, Constraints And Choices, Muhammad Memon, Rana Nazir Ali, Tim Simkins, Viv Garret
Institute for Educational Development, Karachi
Little effort is made to study the role of headteachers in the eastern context, including Pakistan. This paper is based on the study conducted in the government and non-government schools in Pakistan in order to understand headteachers ' role in terms of the emerging demands, constraints and choices. The study suggests that the government school headteachers seem to be less proactive and more interested in maintaining status quo because of the influence of the 'topdown management model'. The study also suggests that the government headteachers have limited choices and many constraints because of the influence of the bureaucratic system. Their …
The Impact Of School Reform On Teacher Professionalism Lessons From Case Studies To Inform Future Professional Development Initiatives, Meher Rizvi
Institute for Educational Development, Karachi
This paper will outline a number of issues faced by Government Primary Schools in Pakistan. Specifically, it will identify a research agenda that needs to be addressed if these schools are to progress. Pakistan's educational system is faced with many problems and dilemmas and each dilemma justifies a reason, but perhaps no problem is as grave as the low quality, the poor morale and the dejected professional status of the teachers. I say that because I believe that schools are only as good as their teachers, regardless of how high their standards, how up-to-date their technology, or how innovative their …

Portfolios And Performance Assessment: Tools For Changing Pedagogy With Pre-Service Mathematics Teachers, R. Welchman
Portfolios And Performance Assessment: Tools For Changing Pedagogy With Pre-Service Mathematics Teachers, R. Welchman
Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations
Portfolios serve many roles in the development of prospective teachers. Faculty at Brooklyn College found that portfolios can play two other important roles — as tools in faculty development and as a conduit in the development and description of college curriculum. Faculty came together to design a portfolio outline which both defined the introductory mathematics methods course and facilitated establishment of standards. The format was adapted for other populations, each time being modified to suit the new context.
Using Undergraduate Teaching Scholars In A Laboratory Course For Non-Science Majors, T. Jordan
Using Undergraduate Teaching Scholars In A Laboratory Course For Non-Science Majors, T. Jordan
Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations
Although laboratory instruction for non-science majors is a major goal of higher education, its implementation is often difficult in practice. Non-science students are often uncomfortable with a laboratory environment and require close supervision for the laboratory instruction to be effective. To address this problem, support from the New York Collaborative for Excellence in Teacher Preparation (NYCETP) was used to recruit and train undergraduate Teaching Scholars to assist in the instructional laboratories of NYU’s core science program. The Teaching Scholar was paired with a graduate student laboratory instructor to create a “teaching team.” Responses on student evaluations show that the arrangement …

Using Evaluation To Foster Nycetp Goals: Case Studies And Intercampsus Collaboration, C K. Tittle, S. J. Pape, B. Flugman
Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations
This article describes the use of case studies as part of the formative evaluation conducted for the New York Collaborative for Excellence in Teacher Preparation (NYCETP). While case studies are often conducted for evaluations by outside experts, consultants, or evaluators themselves, we developed a strategy for case studies that used NYCETP faculty to case-study each other. This strategy involved cross-campus collaboration and cross-discipline (Arts & Science and Education) collaboration, and thus actively supported one of the NYCETP goals. The case study strategy also included the development of a faculty (peer) review form for evaluation of documentation of new and revised …
Patterns In The Sand: Mathematical Exploration Of Chladni Patterns, A. M. Coughlin
Patterns In The Sand: Mathematical Exploration Of Chladni Patterns, A. M. Coughlin
Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations
Chladni Patterns are formed when sand settles at the nodes of two dimensional standing waves, excited on a metallic plate which is driven at a resonant frequency. By considering a two-dimensional rectangular membrane with fixed boundary and constant density as an idealized model of the metal plate, a formula for predicting the Chladni Patterns that will form at certain frequencies can be found. In addition to mathematically exploring these mysterious patterns, I have created my own “Chladni Patterns” in the lab.
