Reform Of Preservice Science Education: An Example From A State-Supported University, R. Adams, G. L. Stringer

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

The ongoing movement to reform the teaching and learning of mathematics and science began as an effort targeting grades K-12. This movement, however, also has significant implications for institutions of higher education, especially in the area of teacher preparation. Northeast Louisiana University has utilized an extensive system of support, including vital National Science Foundation funding, to redesign its science curriculum for elementary education majors. Four courses featuring the content areas of biology, chemistry, geosciences, and physics and integrated with respect to content and methodology were collaboratively developed by education and science faculty. and were approved as requirements for all preservice …

This article describes the project, A Summer Academy Program for Prospective Teachers: Model Teaching Experiences, of the Oklahoma Teacher Education Collaborative (O-TEC), one of the nation’s Collaboratives for Excellence in Teacher Preparation (CETP). To recruit highly qualified teachers in science and mathematics, O-TEC institutions promote a program of summer academies that provide prospective teachers with opportunities to become familiar with effective teaching methods. During the academy, high school juniors and seniors explore inquiry-based teaching strategies, exemplary curricula, science and math content, and state and national standards in math and science education-all under the tutelage of mentor teachers, a Master-Teacher-in- Residence, …

In 1992, Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC) was one of six community colleges invited to participate in a NSF initiative to improve science and mathematics teaching within the state of Michigan. This initiative included all public teacher preparation institutions in the state. GRCC has responded to this challenge by: (1) designing a new course in Physical Science for future teachers; (2) creating the GRCC Teacher Education Pathway and the GRCC Teacher Education Center; (3) forming a local alliance with Grand Rapids Public Schools and Grand Valley State University for the purpose of recruiting and supporting minorities in mathematics and science …

Henry Ford Community College (HFCC) in Dearbom, Michigan is a two-year institution of higher education serving a diverse student population of approximately 13,000 students. In addition to providing a broad array of technical and vocational programs, the College provides the first two years of a baccalaureate program. However, the transferability of these programs is not assured. In the absence of a mandated state-wide curriculum, two- and four-year colleges and universities in Michigan develop courses and programs independently, and the transfer of courses between institutions is determined independently by the respective departments. This paper describes the development of a two-course sequence in mathematics content for prospective elementary teachers. Community college and university personnel collaborated to develop a course sequence that would prepare prospective elementary teachers to teach mathematics with an understanding of concepts to support their abstract mathematical knowledge. The strategy was to begin with a broad vision and then focus on the smaller pieces which would achieve that vision. The course changes are validated by documents published by various educational and mathematical groups advocating an increased emphasis on teaching for understanding rather than rote learning. Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) of the City University of New York (CUNY) is the only two-year college on the island of Manhattan. This institution has a diverse population of approximately 17,000 students who attend day/evening/weekend classes. Over 1,000 students are enrolled in the Early Childhood Education (ECE) Program. Each year, approximately 300 new students select this area of concentration. The dropout rate is less than 14%. The ECE Program prepares students for elementary education programs at four-year institutions. The program also offers two career areas of study: Infant Toddler and Pre-School. The role of the two-year college in the mathematics and science preparation of prospective teachers is fast becoming a prominent influence on teacher education programs across the country. This article describes the multifaceted role of Tulsa Community College (TCC), Tulsa, Oklahoma, in the preparation of prospective teachers in math and science. Since 1987 Tulsa Community College has hosted many events, activities, and programs aimed at the sciences. One Hour Of Chemical Demonstrations, S. Solomon, M. Oliver-Hoyo, J. Tian, B. Brook

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

This article describes a diverse set of chemistry demonstrations especially selected to encourage student interaction and to be easily transported. The demonstrations may be presented at a level that can be tailored to any audience– from very young children to high school students planning careers in science. An ideal environment is a small classroom with 20-30 students where everyone can take part in the discussion. Once the chemicals are prepared, the collection of demonstrations takes about ten minutes to set-up, and one hour (or less) to perform. Very little is needed at the visiting site, no more than a table …

Using Graphing Calculators To Integrate Mathematics And Science, J. Garofalo, F. Pullano

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

The computational, graphing, statistical and programming capabilities of today’s graphing calculators make it possible for teachers and students to explore aspects of functions and investigate real-world situations in ways that were previously inaccessible because of computational constraints. Many of the features of graphing calculators can be used to integrate topics from mathematics and science. Here we provide a few illustrations of activities that use the graphing, parametric graphing, regression, and recursion features of graphing calculators to study mathematics in science contexts.
