For the purpose of this experiment the problem was defined as follows: graduate students at CWCE consist, in the main, of public school teachers and administrators. Their scores in the Cooperative English Test ranked them in the lower third compared with college seniors in representative teachers’ colleges in this country. It was determined that a means should be devised to find out if these test results were acceptable as conclusive evidence of ability.

The purpose of this study was (1) to determine if a classroom teacher could effect an increase in interest in independent reading shown by an intermediate level class through an intensified program of stimulation as measured against the reading interests evidenced by a comparable class not receiving the extra stimulation, and (2) to determine to what extent if any this stimulation of reading interests affected reading ability as measured by a standardized reading achievement test.

Other purposes of the study have been to determine the origin of interruptions and the relationship between disciplinary problems and classroom interruptions. Also included will be an evaluation of teaching duties that reduce teachers’ instructional time.
