Skolem’S Paradox And The Predestination/Free-Will Discussion, Gene B. Chase

The purpose of this paper is to show that both sides of the predestination/free-will discussion are admissible in a way that is more profound than simply the wave-particle duality of light. In wave-particle duality there are two competing physical models of reality which are contradictory. This paper will show that not a contradiction but a difference in viewpoint is the fundamental issue in the discussion of predestination and free will. A discussion of Skolem’s paradox is helpful in this demonstration.

This paper argues for mathematicians thinking about the philosophy of math, especially Christians. It briefly sketches the limitations of formalism, intuitionism, and logicism and uses Christian concept of creation to argue that one can take the best of each of these philosophies and avoid the pitfalls. It also argues for the real existence of mathematical objects apart from the human mind.

This paper examines the foundational crises that have haunted twentieth-century mathematics, beginning with a brief review of the effects generated by Gauss, Lobachevsky, and Bolyai who each developed non-Euclidean parallel axiom. Though of mathematical interest in their own right, the significance of the new geometries was greatly magnified when it was discerned that they could be used to adequately model physical space, even to the extent that Einstein’s theory of relativity later employed as its model a non-Euclidean geometry developed by Riemann. Following World War I European philosophy of science formed an alliance with mathematics culminating in an attitude of certainty and autonomy that rejected all non empirical claims to truth and purported to make all science presupposition less. The rise and fall of logical positivism has been one of the major themes of of twentieth century thought and illustrates the danger of placing too much emphasis on science and mathematics as an ideal for all knowledge. The Elementary Science Study (ESS) is a ''hands on" inquiry oriented, science program with the major objective of putting; physical materials into the hands of children and allowing; them to investigate the nature of the physical world. An ESS unit Bulbs and Batteries was tested to find if this and other ESS units of similar structure do in fact develop science process skills. Science process skills may be broken down into the following representative areas: observing, classifying, using time-space relationship, using numbers, measuring, communication, inferring and predicting.

Teachers are being encouraged to achieve competency in improved mathematics instruction through workshops, "in-service training," National Science Foundation Scholarships, Carnegie Foundation Scholarships, and college summer schools. By providing training and sufficient motivation, educators can solve the primary problem in revamping our mathematics' curriculum. The purpose of this study was twofold: to formulate an aerospace education handbook providing pertinent information and material which may be woven into existing sixth grade courses in the elementary curriculum and to make a careful evaluation of one aerospace program in a sixth grade classroom. The problems were: (1) selection and organization of appropriate information and material for the handbook; (2) determining suggested teaching procedures and activities; and (3) preparation and administration of evaluative instruments for the program.

The purpose of this study was to determine (1) the effectiveness of the demonstration method, as used in science on the elementary school level, in teaching the critical thinking ability; (2) whether a reliable testing device could be designed to measure critical thinking ability at the elementary school level; and (3) whether there exists a relationship between the mental ability of elementary school children and their ability to do critical thinking.
