Iron deficiency is an important, but often minimized issue among adolescent females. While treat with oral iron is generally first-line treatment, IV iron has been shown to be safe and effective. Our study looks at adherence and barriers to oral iron treatment and assesses current use of IV iron for iron deficiency at Children's Mercy, in hopes of helping move towards utilizing the most beneficial treatment for each individual patient.

Decreasing Time To Narcotic Pain Medication In Patients With Sickle Cell Disease Presenting With Acute Pain Crises In A Pediatric Emergency Department: A Quality Improvement Initiative., Allison Adam, Leslie Hueschen, Lina Patel, Christopher Kaberline, Ibad Siddiqi

Background: Guidelines published by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute recommend that patients with sickle cell disease who present in acute pain crisis receive narcotic medication < 60 minutes from arrival. Multi-center studies indicate approximately 50% of institutions are adherent to this level 1a recommendation. From October 2022-October 2023, our institutional median time to narcotic was 61 minutes.

Objective: Our aim was to decrease the time to narcotic administration by 10% (61 min to 55 min) in patients with Sickle Cell Disease presenting to the emergency department for acute pain crisis while simultaneously decreasing disparities in our patient population by Oct 2024. Additionally, we sought to increase the percentage of patients within this population to receive their first narcotic in 60 min from 49% to 70%, by Oct 2024.

Background/Project Intent: Review of cases identified 16 possible follow-up needs. A single patient had a maximum of 12 potential needs. Needs not being addressed included written documentation for need of follow-up without subsequent referral placed/appointment scheduled or need not addressed at all. The goal of this project was to have all follow-up needs addressed for at least 50% of children diagnosed with AHT by January 2025.

Objectives

To describe the presentation, management, and outcomes of severe hypercalcemia in two adolescent females secondary to ovarian malignancy.

Methods

The case series includes two adolescent female patients, aged 11 and 16, diagnosed with rare ovarian malignancies and associated hypercalcemia. Both patients presented with abdominal pain, nausea and constipation. The 11-year-old received zoledronic acid while the 16-year-old received pamidronate. Serum calcium levels, symptoms and medication side effects were monitored before and after bisphosphonate therapy.

Results

Both girls presented with severe hypercalcemia. Patient 1 was an 11-year old girl who presented with serum calcium of 15.0 mg/dL. She began hyperhydration with …

Background: The goal of this project is to improve the accuracy of temperature readings in the cardiac operating room and, in turn, improve patient safety.

Methods: The project obtained nasopharyngeal, tympanic, and bladder/rectal temperature measurements from twenty CPB cases. Measurements were obtained at six critical points: time of incision, initiation of CPB, aortic cross clamping, removal of aortic cross clamping, CPB termination, sternal closure. Data was analyzed to determine discrepancies among methods of measuring temperature for each type of probe utilized. We aim to improve Children’s Mercy residents’ confidence and competence to independently triage admission phone calls, and to help residents develop a system to obtain information during a transport phone call through dedicated academic half days.

A needs assessment at the beginning of the 2024-25 academic year was completed to assess the need for triage education. This study explored fourth-grade students’ and their teacher’s perceptions of learning contracts in a math classroom, as well as their potential impact on assessment scores. Over four weeks, students alternated between using and not using contracts. During week three, participants completed a survey of Likert scale and open-ended questions; select students and the teacher were then interviewed. Field notes were taken weekly. Initial data was coded with level 1 codes, followed by level 2 codes derived from the first round. Themes were developed through indexing and analytical memos. Having JSESD in the Open Access format maximizes access for readers and authors and allows the journal to remain economically sustainable.

The purpose of this quantitative study was to identify if a significant relationship existed between teaching modality and student performance outcomes while also considering the factor of course subject being taught during the 2021-2023 academic years. Three courses were included in the research: Math 1630 Finite Mathematics, English 1010 Composition I, and Biology 1110 General Biology. Each of the three courses are introductory level courses in the math, English, and science subject. The study also included statistical analysis on gender as related to student performance outcomes.

This dissertation examined the vertical and horizontal content analysis of statistical content within current 8th-grade mathematics instructional materials to determine the extent to which students are provided with opportunity to learn high cognitive instances and the usage of the four phases of statistical problem-solving across two commercial publishers, one open educational resource, and one curriculum software supplement. All previous analyses of statistics education content textbooks have only examined textbooks from commercial publishers or those published by national governments. We examined an outdoor, experiential learning approach within a science methods course for nontraditional adult learners who are often career changers or individuals transitioning into teaching later in life. Through immersive, nature-based experiences, the course connected adult learners to science via direct engagement with the natural world. We include reflections from two nontraditional learners who participated in a 6-week nature journaling process, showcasing how they embraced inquiry-based experiences in natural settings. These reflections reveal a supportive learning environment that values diverse learning styles and life experiences and encourages exploration. Mathematical modelling is an effective approach that helps students develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts by connecting mathematics to real-life contexts and to other disciplines. Model Eliciting Activities (MEAs) are student-centred processes in which learners use modelling methods to solve complex real-world problems. This case study aimed to design interdisciplinary MEAs for pre-service teachers, to evaluate these activities according to modelling principles, and to examine participants’ views after the implementation.
