In the highly competitive event of pole vaulting, athletes must possess great gymnastic skills and they must also be great runners. For many years scientific research has demonstrated that final approach velocity in the pole vault is a significant component of vaulting success. The purpose of this study was threefold. First, a research-based procedure for the quantification and assessment of final approach velocity in the pole vault was developed. Second, a set of coaching guidelines describing the set-up and implementation of the procedure was presented. Assessing The Impact Of Sustained Professional Development On Middle School Mathematics Teachers, Joanne E. Goodell, Lesley H. Parker, Jane Butler Kahle

The study reported in this paper examines the impact of the Ohio Statewide Systemic Initiative (SSI) on participating mathematics teachers. Quantitative data from 90 SSI-trained teachers and 400 teachers without training, along with qualitative data collected from seven SSI teachers who were visited in their classrooms are presented. Analysis of the quantitative data showed that SSI and Non-SSI teachers reported significantly different frequencies of reformed teaching practices and held significantly different views about the nature and pedagogy of mathematics. A Comparison Of Reported Teacher Selection Practices Of Elementary Principals In Michigan To Recommended Selection Methods, John E. Jarpe

Teacher selection is a complex, critical school personnel function. School leaders in Michigan’s districts will be hiring more teachers as projected enrollment increases and pending teacher retirements combine to open teaching positions. This study examined the effectiveness of teacher selection practices as they compared to selection methods described in administrative textbooks, journal articles, and research studies.

Thirty-six Michigan elementary principals reported their school building and district selection procedures. Qualitative analysis focused on their transcribed responses to interview questions about the aspects of teacher selection. The principals represented public schools that combined varying grade levels of kindergarten through sixth grade.

During 1950-90, the nonmetro civilian labor force declined except during the 1970’s. In the 1970’s, nonmetro manufacturing increased substantially, and the baby boom generation entered the labor force. By contrast, the retail/wholesale labor force increased in every decade except for the 1980’s. Several factors could have contributed to the decline in the retail/wholesale labor force, including population decline and the effects of large retail establishments.

Student And Staff Perceptions Of The Point And Level System At An Alternative School In Central Virginia, Michelle B. Kocen

The purpose of this study was to examine student and staff perceptions of a point and level system at a specific alternative school. Ten students and four staff members were interviewed using a researcher developed table of questions. As this research was qualitative in nature, answers to the questions were analyzed for recurring themes. Ten themes were generated for students and eight themes were generated for staff. The results showed that students and staff held mixed feelings about the point and level system.

The purpose of this study was to identify the roles/functions of technical/vocational education (TVE) administrators in Barbados and to ascertain their personal needs for further preparation and continuing professional development.

The population for the study consisted of 115 TVE administrators from the Ministry of Education, tertiary institutions, vocational centers, Grammar schools, and Newer secondary schools. The survey method was used to gather the data. All respondents were asked to complete a 87-item questionnaire which described various roles/functions associated with the administration of TVE programs under eight major categories. The purpose of. this study was to investigate how recent graduates of a special education and an elementary education program perceived their preparation to teach. Sixty-five recent graduates responded to a twenty-two item Teacher Perception Likert-Scale questionnaire regarding their perceptions about their education. The results were analyzed by calculating means for three separate indices within the questionnaire to provide information on overall satisfaction. A t-test indicated no significant differences at the .OS level for each index between special education and elementary education graduates . A self-developed survey was used in collecting data for this research. Rawsonville Elementary is a neighborhood school near Detroit, where the automotive industry is the major employer. Recent layoffs have affected many families in the area, and more than half of the school's 480 students receive reduced or free lunch. Of the district's six elementary schools, Rawsonville has been identified as most in need of Chapter 1 services. For years, the school improvement team had worked hard to improve student motivation and learning. Yet, something was still missing. The number of at-risk and underachieving students entering the school continued to increase.

Summarized in this document are results from a survey distributed to find the number of hours elementary, middle and high school teachers were trained to teach the six decision making skills to students . This survey found that at least sixty percent of all teachers responding received no training. The teachers indicated which skills were the most important for students to acquire . The skills which were most important for students to acquire were rated among the lowest for student mastery of the concept/skill. It had been suggested that these students possessed inadequate levels of literacy to function as competent teachers. Students are assumed to have adequate literacy ability for the Bachelor of Arts course, and thus the teaching profession, when they receive a pass mark in their T.E.E. This study examined the impact of teacher in-service training on the ability of teachers to identify children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in their classrooms. The subjects were 16 teachers from two small rural midwestern schools. All but one of the teachers were females, with a range in years of teaching experience from five through 30 years.

This article first looks at how teachers' apt work is contrasted with that of teacher-perceived inept administrative work habits. Second, a distinction is made between teacher official and pragmatic work zones. More teacher autonomy was achieved through completing administrative duties within the pragmatic zone. This acted as a constant source of teacher struggle and frustration, yet concurrently this was also a possible source of liberation. Conclusions suggest that both teacher and administrators first open communication lines by airing the core of the problem that bothers them, and second, create united normative platforms on "issues." This case study documented a staff development program which was the major component of a public school/university partnership between Portland State University and the Lake Oswego School District, a suburb of Portland, Oregon. A select group of 34 Lake Oswego teachers and 4 administrators participated in the Joint Ventures in Instructional Leadership Program which included classes in learning and instructional theory, techniques of peer sharing, instructional strategies and models of teaching, and approaches to the teaching of higher order thinking skills.
