Ldentificatlon .Of Factors Influencing Vocatlonal Agriculture Teachers To Leave Teaching, Roy D. Dillon

This study was undertaken in an effort to obtain objective data in as nonthreatening a manner as possible concerning the reasons why teachers quit. The 26 former teachers interviewed openly discussed why they chose another occupation, and were willing to rank their reasons. The reasons given and their ranking generally support the present job held by the respondents, as three of the top five factors listed most often related to farming and ranching. Seventeen of the 25 respondents were in farming and ranching.

This study, as well as other studies reviewed, points toward the need for continual follow-up of graduates. …

The Johnson Family Papers consist of correspondence, diaries, journals, speeches, reports, newspaper clippings, financial records, photographs, and other records relating to the family of David Bancroft Johnson, founder and first president of Winthrop (1886-1928) including, his wife Mai Rutledge Smith Johnson (Class of 1898), and their children, David Bancroft, Jr., Burgh, and Suzanne Johnson. The collection covers topics concerning David Bancroft Johnson’s work with the Columbia, South Carolina school system and the origins of Winthrop. Correspondents include Edward Southey Joynes, J.C. McCurry, Frances W. Parker, A.D. Mayo, William G. Burgin, and W.R. Bradford among many others.

This paper examines the foundational crises that have haunted twentieth-century mathematics, beginning with a brief review of the effects generated by Gauss, Lobachevsky, and Bolyai who each developed non-Euclidean parallel axiom. Though of mathematical interest in their own right, the significance of the new geometries was greatly magnified when it was discerned that they could be used to adequately model physical space, even to the extent that Einstein’s theory of relativity later employed as its model a non-Euclidean geometry developed by Riemann. In teaching the foundations of mathematics within the framework of a Christian college, and particularly that of a Christian liberal arts college, there are two groups of students which must be served. The first consisted of the non-mathematics majors—those non-scientifically oriented “general anything” students who, as a catalog might put it, are to receive “an introduction to and an appreciation of the history, foundations, culture and applications of mathematics.” The second group consists of the mathematics majors, and the few science majors who have not been frightened away by the calculus. ACMS Conference Proceedings 1977

The purpose of this paper is to show that both sides of the predestination/free-will discussion are admissible in a way that is more profound than simply the wave-particle duality of light. In wave-particle duality there are two competing physical models of reality which are contradictory. This paper will show that not a contradiction but a difference in viewpoint is the fundamental issue in the discussion of predestination and free will. A discussion of Skolem’s paradox is helpful in this demonstration.

This paper argues for mathematicians thinking about the philosophy of math, especially Christians. It briefly sketches the limitations of formalism, intuitionism, and logicism and uses Christian concept of creation to argue that one can take the best of each of these philosophies and avoid the pitfalls. It also argues for the real existence of mathematical objects apart from the human mind.

An Analysis Of Selected Factors Influencing Use Of Time By Forty Vocational Agriculture Instructors In Nebraska, Roy D. Dillon

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications

Forty teachers of vocational agriculture in Nebraska worked an average of 2,652 hours per year, or 221 hours per month. About one-third of their time was used for teaching agriculture day classes, 11% for supervising Future Farmers of America (FFA) activities, 8% for curriculum planning, and 6% for supervising occupational experience programs. These four duty categories accounted for 56% of the time of the teachers.

Of the five program-oriented variables studied and being reported, none had significant influence on mean hours worked per month for the 40 teachers. There were, however, several significant differences found among groups on the ANOVA …
