Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

With national divorce statistics on a rise, higher education should consider its approach to meeting the needs of students from these homes. Specifically, faith-based institutions must think about the effects divorce has had on the faith development of students from divorced families. Using individual interviews and a focus group, I researched the experiences and faith development of seven students from divorced homes attending three private Christian institutions in Southern California. The qualitative nature of the study gave voice to the unique stories of these students.

Disciplining Service Learning: Institutionalization And The Case For Community Studies, Dan W. Butin

This article argues that the service-learning field has been pursuing the wrong revolution. Namely, service learning has been envisioned as a transformative pedagogical practice and philosophical orientation that would change the fundamental policies and practices of the academy. However, its attempted institutionalization faces substantial barriers and positions service learning in an uncomfortable double-bind that ultimately co-opts and neutralizes its agenda. This article argues that a truly transformative agenda may be to create a parallel movement to develop an “academic home” for service learning within academic “community studies” programs. This “disciplining” of service learning is the truly revolutionary potential of institutionalizing …

Evaluation Of A Livestock Ethics Curriculum For High School Youth, Clinton P. Rusk, Keli M. Brubaker, Mark Balschweid, Edmond A. Pajor

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a livestock ethics curriculum developed for high school students in Agricultural Education classes. The three hour curriculum was taught by Keli Brubaker to 305 students enrolled in eight Indiana High School Agriculture programs. Data were collected using a pre-test/post-test experimental design and both tests were administered by the researcher to ensure consistent and detailed instructions were given to students. The McNemar test in SPSS was used to evaluate pre-test/post-test responses. Sergeant Burke Wylie of the 31st Iowa Infantry Regiment was an eyewitness to the events and series of historic battles that occurred between Chattanooga, Tennessee and Atlanta, Georgia. His vivid descriptions of the ferocity of combat, the geographic features of battlefields and the local inhabitants he encountered are well depicted in his correspondence. Sergeant Wylie's letters begin in December 1863 near Chattanooga and conclude in September 1864 outside of Atlanta.

The purpose of this study was to ascertain if there is a specific style of teaching which is better suited for the distance learning (virtual) environment, as opposed to the traditional classroom environment. Numerous studies have shown that individuals have different delivery styles in the classroom. The study utilized instructor delivery styles and faculty perceptions of distance learning programs to develop an instrument which identifies the style that would be more successful in the distance learning environment. This study was conducted to determine the extent to which student’s reflective writings during the educational leadership internship indicated if students were able to understand and relate the ELCC standards to their schools practices. A second purpose was to use these reflective journals to evaluate how well the program prepared the students for their role as future school leaders by examining how well their experiences aligned with the ELCC standards.

Professionals are being expected to function in a progressively complex environment in all fields (Twale & Kochan, 2000). Technology plays a significant role in this challenge (Diem, 2002; Karlen, 2001), particularly for educational leaders (Mendis, 2002). Teaching and leading have become increasingly multifaceted art forms with the advent of learning technologies. Faculty working in research-intensive university environments find a variety of challenges to their time, energies, and resources, including finding balance between the traditional areas of teaching, research, and service. In most research universities, the research focus becomes all encompassing, and institutional service commitments are called into question. The current study of over 500 faculty in research university environments demonstrates the need for shared governance to be clear and purposeful in its work and intentions in order to muster faculty support.
