Eliminating Health Discrepancies: Insights Through Free Market Or State Control, A. Singh, Bharathi Purohit
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
Healthcare inequality or healthcare disparity refers to the differences in the quality of health and health care across different populations. This may include differences in the prevalence of disease, health outcomes, or access to health care across racial, ethnic, gender, and socioeconomic groups. Differences among populations in the presence of disease and health outcomes are well documented in many areas. In the United States, disparities are well documented in minority populations such as African Americans, Native Americans, Asian Americans, and Latinos, with these groups having higher incidence of chronic diseases, higher mortality, and poorer overall health outcomes. For example, the …

“The Teacher Doesn’T Like Me:” Exploring The Relationship Between Teacher Attitudes Toward Student-Athletes And Academic Performance, Latisha Forster Scott
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
More than 7.5 million high school students in the United States participate in organized sport according to a survey conducted by the National Federation of State High School Associations (National Federation of State high School Associations [NFHS], 2010). Athletic participation is the single most popular school-sponsored extracurricular activity, regardless of race, ethnicity, or gender (Miller, Melnick, Barnes, Farrell, & Sabo, 2005; Eccles & Barber, 1999; Eide & Ronan, 2001). With the high popularity of sport participation, the controversy over the effect of athletic participation on academic progress and success continues to linger (Ward, 2008; Marsh, 1993; Miller et al. 2005). …

Strategies For Enhancing Private Sector Participation In The Funding Of Secondary Schools In Delta State, Nigeria, E.D. Nakpodia
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
Secondary education occupies a strategic position in Delta state because of the important role it plays in preparing the students for useful living in the society and for higher education. The state government manages and funds secondary education .(Onwusoanya, 2005). To ensure that secondary schools achieved what they are set to achieve , they must in environment that encourage students’ encumbrance. Standard should be the strong point of the schools (Olanreweya, 2005)
Toward A Functional Followers’ Model In The Organizational Leadership Process, John Ekundayo
Toward A Functional Followers’ Model In The Organizational Leadership Process, John Ekundayo
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
There are many researchers and practitioners who have at various times and situations defined the term leadership to suit their whims and caprices. A popular scholar in the field of management and leadership opined that “there are almost as many different definitions of leadership as there are persons who have attempted to define the concept” (Bass, 1981, p. 11). There is no gainsaying the fact that in organizations, leadership plays a vital role almost on a daily basis. It is perhaps based on this premise that makes many practitioners and scholars to focus more on leaders when discussing or writing …

Managing Childhood Asthma In The School Environment, Amanda Hawkins, Leslie Painter, Sally Richter
Managing Childhood Asthma In The School Environment, Amanda Hawkins, Leslie Painter, Sally Richter
Perspectives In Learning
It is often taken for granted that schools are instrumental in the spread of illness from child to child as well as from child to teacher. In addition to the nagging colds, stomach viruses and other temporary maladies, the school environment may actually contribute to some lifelong medical conditions. Many children face an unhealthy school environment on a daily basis, year after year, which may contribute to a condition called asthma. Asthma causes the airways of the lungs to swell and constrict and can often flare up without warning. Asthma is one of the top childhood disorders and is also …
Resolving The Conflict: Brain-Based Learning, Best Practices, And No Child Left Behind, Cindy Bowen
Resolving The Conflict: Brain-Based Learning, Best Practices, And No Child Left Behind, Cindy Bowen
Perspectives In Learning
Research shows brain-based learning is achieved best when the students are in an active, low-stress state (Jensen, 2008), and people have unique learning styles that facilitate the assimilation of new knowledge (Gardner, 1983). However, current testing practices hinder the creation of an optimal learning environment, because teachers feel they have to build test-taking skills and spend valuable educational time teaching in ways they believe are not best practices. Changes in the brain can be seen with highly sophisticated imaging technology such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), functional MRI, and positron emission tomography (PET) (Drevets & Raichle, 1998). This imaging technology …
Teaching And Helping College Students With Personal Problems During Tough Economic Times, Marcia Rossi
Teaching And Helping College Students With Personal Problems During Tough Economic Times, Marcia Rossi
Perspectives In Learning
The student population today may be facing increased need for support services, due to a wide variety of potential personal problems. Reasons for this include the increased number of students in college who have learning disabilities or other disabilities, the economic downturn of 2008 driving older students to pursue college degrees, and the number of veterans in school who are returning from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Faculty members and academic advisors may be approached by students who are experiencing personal problems, and may not know how to offer help. Suggestions for helping and teaching such students are offered; these …
Winning The War Against Childhood Obesity: The Role Of Teachers And Schools In Early Childhood Education, Paula Walker
Winning The War Against Childhood Obesity: The Role Of Teachers And Schools In Early Childhood Education, Paula Walker
Perspectives In Learning
American children are at the epicenter of a global childhood obesity epidemic. Due to increased adiposity, school-aged children are being routinely diagnosed with adult illnesses like Type II diabetes, hypertension, and elevated cholesterol levels. The keys to combating these epidemiological trends are prevention and early intervention. Since the majority of American children are enrolled in school, school-based interventions offer enormous potential in teaching lifelong health habits and curbing the incidence of childhood obesity, especially when these habits are taught proactively as a component of early childhood education. Adiposity rebound is the critical period of increasing body mass index (BMI), that …

Learning About Teaching: Redesigning Teacher Preparation, Barbara Buckner
Learning About Teaching: Redesigning Teacher Preparation, Barbara Buckner
Perspectives In Learning
Our country has not yet tackled the question, how do we best prepare teachers. Maybe because the question should be; how do we best support our candidates to learn about teaching in order for them to develop into highly qualified and effective teachers? The answer seems to lie in strategic partnerships between universities and school districts, the quality and length of clinical experiences, and state policies for teacher preparation. Reformers call for a shift towards more clinically based programs that integrate academic content and professional knowledge and skills. Some models that show promise are those that have tried to emulate …
Does Time-Of-Day Of Instruction Impact Class Achievement?, Amanda J. Wile, Gary A. Shouppe
Does Time-Of-Day Of Instruction Impact Class Achievement?, Amanda J. Wile, Gary A. Shouppe
Perspectives In Learning
This article explores literature related to Time-of-Day instruction and possible impact on student achievement for students. The possibility of schools as a contributing factor to the problem of low academic performance by some students due to a conflict between personal chronotype and school schedule may have research significance. In order for learning to take place, student engagement must be paramount and provide optimal opportunities for students to utilize their personal learning, for modalities may hinge on physical readiness as well. Several studies at multiple grade levels related to the investigation of circadian rhythms and biological patterns which indicate an effect …

Perspectives In Learning
This discussion focuses on the utility of two unique Web 2.0 tools designed to elicit more interaction among students and to increase learning outcomes while instructing at a distance. While Web 1.0 could be described as that iteration of the World Wide Web that focused simply on making information accessible, the philosophy of Web 2.0 applications is based upon user-centered designs and the proliferation of volunteer collaboration. Fortunately, the explosion of Web 2.0 technologies and social networking platforms have provided a wide array of applications uniquely suited to addressing distance education challenges. We discuss the application of two Web 2.0 …
Exploring Podcasting Of Required Reading In A Graduate Counseling Course, Richard Long, Dee Fabry
Exploring Podcasting Of Required Reading In A Graduate Counseling Course, Richard Long, Dee Fabry
Perspectives In Learning
Podcasting is a relatively unexplored technology tool in education (Hew, 2009). This study explored the integration of podcasting in an onsite graduate counseling course to determine how digital students responded to the integration of podcasting and to determine if podcasting impacts student comprehension of required reading materials. The results indicated that, while students came to class better prepared to discuss the material and enjoyed the podcasts, they preferred traditional teacher-led discussions to the podcasting technology.
Key words: podcasting, technology skills
Faculty Perceptions Of Academic Freedom At A Private Religious University, James A. Swezey, T. Christopher Ross
Faculty Perceptions Of Academic Freedom At A Private Religious University, James A. Swezey, T. Christopher Ross
Faculty Publications and Presentations
Academic freedom is viewed by many in higher education as an indispensable foundational principle offering protection to university faculty. University faculty working within schools of education rely on the protection of academic freedom to pursue and develop new knowledge, frameworks, and pedagogies with which they can train and equip the next generation of classroom teachers and school administrators. Private religious universities have been a part of the American education landscape since the founding of Harvard University, yet the perception exists that faculty at religious universities are de facto inhibited by the religious commitment of many of these institutions. This study …
Progress To Reconciliation: A Journey With Lewis, Bono, And Spider-Man, David M. Johnstone
Progress To Reconciliation: A Journey With Lewis, Bono, And Spider-Man, David M. Johnstone
Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development
Reconciliation is a word full of profound inferences. It has implications steeped in the biblical landscape, yet it is also challenging to define. Using Miroslav Volf‘s guidance, twentieth century fiction, and film and pop music icons, this article seeks to glimpse a deeper biblical vision of grace and reconciliation. Volf observes that “[t]o triumph fully, evil needs two victories, not one.” Reconciliation sabotages and steals that victory from evil. Forgiveness and reconciliation do not negate justice; they provide the opportunity to go beyond justice and retribution. Simply put, reconciliation allows a terrible situation to be redeemed.

Education in the opinion of (Akindutire, 2010) is regarded by many as the key that unlocks the development of personal and national potentials of individuals including their rights and powers. However, (Abdulkareem, 2010) sees it as the best legacy a nation can provide for its citizenry, as it ensures a relative permanent change in the thinking perspective of the individual to commitment and development of the immediate environment. It is the light, without which the whole world would be in darkness, as it also serves as the basis of scientific and technological breakthrough and modernity, which have made all nations …

Evaluation Of School Principals: Arizona Superintendents’ Perspective, Scarlet Chopin, Richard Wiggall
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
This article presents the results of the Arizona Statewide Superintendents’ Survey regarding the evaluation of school principals. Arizona Revised Statute 15-353 delineates the responsibilities of principals, which include providing leadership for the school, implementing the goals and the strategic plan of the school, serving as the administrator of the school, and distributing a parental satisfaction survey to the parent of every child enrolled at the school. There are state performance standards, the Arizona Standards for School Administrators (ADE, 2010). Arizona law clearly defines the principal’s responsibilities and each governing board is required to establish systems for the evaluation of the …

Talking With Faculty About Cognitive Science And Learning, John Girash
Talking With Faculty About Cognitive Science And Learning, John Girash
Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education: Archives
When it comes to teaching, faculty at a research-intensive institution can be very much like our students in relation to their studies: very smart people whose primary interests lie elsewhere or, at least, whose expertise is not in this area. And we hear over and over again the common wisdom that faculty want research-based ideas on teaching. This implies that we can treat the teaching of teachers about research-supported aspects of learning in ways analogous to teaching students about other academic topics.
In introducing research-based ideas into the pedagogical discussion, it can be tough to find a balance between concepts …

Teaching Assessment By Modeling Different Assessment Techniques, Cynthia E. Tobery
Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education: Archives
Getting feedback early and often helps us gauge what students are learning well or less well, what they are taking away from the class, and what changes we may want to make. Assessment techniques can be used before, during, and after a class to get this feedback.
One of the goals of the Future Faculty Teacher Training Series offered through the Dartmouth Center for the Advancement of Learning is to model various instructional techniques that the participants may decide to use in their own classes. We include some type of assessment for each part of the series in addition to …

Helping Future Faculty “Come Out” As Teachers, Mark R. Connolly
Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education: Archives
I study graduate education--specifically, the formation of future faculty and the professional development programs that help them learn to teach. Over the past seven years, I have interviewed more than 70 doctoral students and postdocs in science, engineering, and math at leading research universities. When I ask my respondents why they initially chose to pursue a doctorate, they usually tell me how much they enjoyed their undergraduate education, which was characterized by powerful learning experiences driven by strong relationships with smart and passionate instructors. My respondents fondly recall professors who stoked students’ curiosity, demonstrated the thrill of scientific discovery, and …

The Associates In Teaching Program: Graduate Student Development, Faculty Renewal, And Curricular Innovation, Bill Rando
Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education: Archives
Conflicting goals define university life. Luckily, conflicting goals sometimes inspire creative innovation. The Associates in Teaching Program is one such example.
At research universities, administrators must balance the needs of graduate students and those of undergraduate students – graduate students need practice teaching to prepare them for faculty life; undergraduates (and their parents) would prefer instruction by more experienced faculty members. Nearly all universities meet the needs of graduate students through teaching assistant positions in labs and sections. Some go further by allowing graduate students to teach independent courses, which benefits most graduate students, but frustrates others who feel that …

An Appreciative Approach To Goal-Setting For Academic Employees, Hannah George
An Appreciative Approach To Goal-Setting For Academic Employees, Hannah George
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
When asked what he looks for when hiring employees, Dr. Paul Orehovec, Vice President of Enrollment Management at University of Miami responds, “Somebody who wants my job” (personal communication, September 25, 2010). He further explains that the heavy demands of higher education administrative positions require people who are self-motivated and driven. These professionals need mentoring relationships to help them establish appropriate career and professional goals. Mentors often have valuable knowledge to share with their mentees on these topics, but do not always know how to effectively share their expertise. Mentoring relationships occur in a number of settings in academia, but …

Empirical Analysis Of School Plant Planning As A Determinant Of Secondary School Students’ Academic Performance, K.O. Muraina, Kayode Ijaduola, Joshua Oni
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
The school could be viewed as an organized environment where educational curricular are interpreted. It is a formal structured organization which serves as a transitional stage in life between family and the society (Olabode, 2002; Musa, 2004; Tabir, 2004). Conversely, the school plant according to Nwokafor and others (2001), is the totality of all things that make up a school system. It involves the physical and material facilities in form of buildings, school site and the environment that embody the school.
