Investigating The Efficacy Of An Ontological Framework For Teaching Natural Selection Using Agent-Based Simulations, Man Su, Michelene T.H. Chi, Jesse Ha, Yue Xin
Department of Teaching and Learning Scholarship and Creative Works
Integrating agent-based models (ABMs) has been a popular approach for teaching emergent science concepts. However, students continue to find it difficult to explain the emergent process of natural selection. In this study, we employ an ontological framework-the Pattern, Agents, Interactions, Relations, and Causality (PAIR-C)-to guide the design of the ABM simulation module. This study examines the effects of the PAIR-C ABM module versus the Regular ABM module on fostering students' understanding of natural selection. Drawing on pre-posttest data, we found that students in the Intervention group had a better causal understanding when explaining natural selection than the Control group. This …

Towards Pre-Service Teachers’ Theory-Praxis Nexus In Early Years English And Literacy Education: A Pilot Study, Maryanne Pale, Sarah Ohi, Lyn Kee
Towards Pre-Service Teachers’ Theory-Praxis Nexus In Early Years English And Literacy Education: A Pilot Study, Maryanne Pale, Sarah Ohi, Lyn Kee
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
International literature highlights that a perennial challenge for initial teacher educators is to guide Pre-Service Teachers (PSTs) to develop a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between theory and practice. Whilst there is a growing body of research that examines the relationship and/or the gap between theory and practice in teacher education, there remains a paucity of research that examines this phenomenon in the teaching of English and literacy units in higher education. This pilot study examined how PSTs from two Australian universities made connections and/or links (nexus) between their academic knowledge (theory) and professional experience (praxis) for the teaching of …
Reporting Values, Partnership With Parents And The Hidden Curriculum: A Qualitative Study, Veronica Elizabeth Morcom
Reporting Values, Partnership With Parents And The Hidden Curriculum: A Qualitative Study, Veronica Elizabeth Morcom
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
The Australian government funded the West Australian project ‘Reporting Values to Parents’ as part of ‘The Values in Action Schools Project’ (2009). The two aims of the qualitative study were to develop a common values language supported by observable behaviours and an appreciation that values education is fundamental to schooling. Teachers used an action research process to create authentic values activities and involve parents in the assessment process. Parents shifted their perspectives to ratify teachers’ role to teach values explicitly. Students experienced a deeper sense of connection and belonging at school. Educators can adapt the activities in this paper to …
Examining Elementary Teacher Perceptions And Experiences Of Transitioning From Knowledge-Based To Inquiry-Based Social Studies Standards, Benjamin Stephen Pinnick
Examining Elementary Teacher Perceptions And Experiences Of Transitioning From Knowledge-Based To Inquiry-Based Social Studies Standards, Benjamin Stephen Pinnick
Murray State Theses and Dissertations
Elementary educators are responsible for the earliest years of student learning in a public setting. The amount of content students are expected to master continues to grow in scope, and the methods that are utilized shift to align with educational research and social momentum. After a decade of Common Core policies, social studies education in elementary schools has become a deemphasized subject. Reading and math, as well as science, have taken a greater precedence in today’s classrooms.
Yet, expectations for the creation of knowledgeable and participatory citizens continue to serve as a goal in elementary schools. Conceptualization of citizenship form …

As researchers and educators, we are committed to engaging in critical participatory action research (CPAR) that raises our critical consciousness, disrupts colonial structures, and is responsible – epistemically and ethically – to the communities to which we belong (Ayala, et al., 2018; Guishard, 2009; Torre & Fine, 2011). In this manuscript, we write about the epistemological and theoretical reflections of our critical research collective, how we unpacked our colonial yokes, and how those reflections shaped our research and informed our collective praxis (see Figure 1). The evolution of our collective praxis is the central focus of this paper. We describe …

Open Educational Resources - Teaching and Learning
The Journey “Box” allows preservice teachers to explore and share their own historical narrative as they different aspects of their own family’s journey to America. The Journey “Box” first asks preservice teachers to explore themes by reading children’s literature and then positions preservice teachers as interviewers as they seek out different facets of their family’s historical narrative from members of their family. Preservice teachers then use their experience with a Journey “Box” to design an inquiry that could be used in their field experience. The Journey “Box” integrates social studies standards and best practices with ELA standards.

Teaching Black Elementary Students: The Influence Of Experiences And Teacher Preparation For Pwi And Hbcu Interns On Their Understanding Of And Self-Efficacy For Culturally Responsive Teaching, Jeania N. Jones
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Teacher preparation program agendas include culturally responsive teaching (CRT) due to the student diversity in modern elementary classrooms. Overwhelmingly, White, middle-class English-speaking women who may not completely understand their students' cultural backgrounds are teachers in those culturally diverse classrooms. In schools where Eurocentric values, assumptions, beliefs, and methodologies are being taught, many students of color are not performing well academically. Black teachers and teachers with a good understanding of students' cultural experiences and backgrounds have higher expectations and counter the racial stereotypes about Black students. This multiple case study examined how two teacher interns understand Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) and …
