Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) usage to wrap reinforced concrete (RC) structures has become a popular technology. Most studies about RC columns wrapped with FRP in literature ignored the internal steel reinforcement. This paper aims to develop a model for the axial compressive strength and axial strain for FRP confined concrete columns with internal steel reinforcement. The impact of FRP, Transverse, and longitudinal reinforcement is studied. Two non-destructive analysis methods are explored: Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) and Regression Analysis (RA). This paper discusses the history and development of standardized testing and its initial purpose and intentions. Additionally, the effects of standardized testing on students, teachers, and parents are evaluated, with special consideration on how high stakes testing adversely affects disadvantaged student groups such as children in minorities and low-income districts, bilingual students, and children with disabilities. Abstract

This study examined the case of 22 mid-Atlantic K-5 public school teachers’ conceptions of the Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Reading Assessment Systems 1-3. The Namaste School District delivers ELA curriculum through reader’s and writer’s workshop. Triangulated data showed that participants held varying conceptions of the F&P. Specifically, they shared similar conceptions regarding the importance of one-on-one time with students, the amount of time it takes to administer the assessment, and the subjectivity of the F&P results. Results of this study provided similar results to other studies of teachers’ conceptions of assessment and adds to the literature debate regarding …

Rater-mediated classroom observation protocols are increasingly being used for teaching performance assessments, which makes identifying and controlling for various rater effects a central issue to ensure the rating quality. A series of validation studies under the classical test theory framework, including content validity, interrater reliability, and structure analysis, have been completed for the 16-item Mathematics Classroom Observation Protocol for Practices (MCOP²).

A previous TPT article discussed using glow sticks to demonstrate color mixing by comparing the spectra of red, green, and blue glow sticks to those of yellow and magenta glow sticks.1 More recently, a paper in the Journal of Chemical Education describes a method to separate glow stick dyes using chromatography with chalk and a solvent of acetone or alcohol.2 This method, while a valuable experience in a chemistry class, requires the glow stick to be opened. Asassn-14ko Is A Periodic Nuclear Transient In Eso 253-G003, Dirk Grupe

We present the discovery that ASASSN-14ko is a periodically flaring active galactic nucleus at the center of the galaxy ESO 253-G003. At the time of its discovery by the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN), it was classified as a supernova close to the nucleus. The subsequent 6 yr of V- and g-band ASAS-SN observations revealed that ASASSN-14ko has nuclear flares occurring at regular intervals. The 17 observed outbursts show evidence of a decreasing period over time, with a mean period of P0 = 114.2 ± 0.4 days and a period derivative of P = -0.0017  0.0003. The most …

In Australia, teacher education students must pass the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) to meet accreditation requirements. Although this has been mandated since 2016, there are currently few resources available for students to use in preparation for the test. To help students prepare for the numeracy component of the LANTITE, we developed an online Numeracy Practice Test (NPT) through the institution’s learning management system. This study assessed the learning analytics from the NPT between students who subsequently passed the numeracy component of the LANTITE with those that failed. Research shows that students choose to engage with content and application activities when they are directly aligned to assessment. The researchers trialled praxis-based assessment which required completion of practical learning tasks embedded in core learning content over two semesters in two Australian Initial Teacher Education courses. Numerous recent scientific reviews (2) further underscore the important role physical activity plays in achieving optimal health and preventing noncommunicable disease. For example, physical activity reduces risk of several types of cancer (3), ischemic heart disease, ischemic stroke, heart failure, and premature mortality (4). Jennifer Bradley (plaintiff) was a junior year student athlete at the University in Washington, D.C. Bradley played field hockey for the university, and in September 2011, she was hit on the head during a field hockey game between the university and Richmond University. After that hit, she began experiencing symptoms of a concussion, but continued to play hockey in practice and games. The plaintiff was not advised to sit out of practices and games, despite her symptoms persisting and a diagnosis of a concussion being confirmed. This article describes accounts of grading reform initiatives that while well-intentioned, met with staunch opposition and eventually were abandoned. The implementation strategies employed by the leaders of these reform initiative are explored, along with reasons these strategies failed to result in meaningful and enduring change. Alternative grading reform strategies with supporting evidence are offered, justification for their use explained, and new directions for grading reform initiatives recommended.

This qualitative study provides insight on the impact of an intensive civil rights bus tour on the multicultural competence development of undergraduate student leaders. Specifically, this phenomenological inquiry explored the lived experiences of four individuals who participated in a civil rights bus tour as undergraduate student leaders. Through interpretive phenomenological analysis, several themes emerged that have bearing on the development of multicultural competence in undergraduate student leaders. The results of this study conclude that the multicultural competence of the undergraduate student leaders who participated in the tour developed in significant ways.
