Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
In this study a somewhat different line of research is attempted. The endeavor here is to evaluate two approaches to the teaching of work-type reading. One of these is the traditional or group plan, the other an individualized scheme a great deal like that recently mentioned by Washburn.
An answer here is sought as to whether work type reading is taught more effectively to fourth grade children through group instruction or by a highly individualized technique. The measure of effectiveness was that as indicated by scores on standardized tests interpreted as reading ages, and other evidence that this will be …

The Relation Between Attendance And Achievement In The Third Grade Of The San Jose School, Vera Cutler
The Relation Between Attendance And Achievement In The Third Grade Of The San Jose School, Vera Cutler
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
Are teachers justified in the belief that the student who is frequently absent from school cannot acquire the fundamental education gained by the child who attends regularly? Does the child with greater intelligence attend school more regularly than the child of lesser intelligence? If not , does his greater intelligence make it possible for him to acquire the knowledge whether or not he attends school regularly? This study seeks to throw light on these questions by determining what relation exists between school attendance and achievement when intelligence is held constant.

Desirability Of State-Adopted Textbooks For New Mexico High Schools, Reb Leroy Villard
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
It is possible that uniformity of textbooks might tend to simplify the matter of supervision but there are other educational factors which should be attempted. It appears reasonable, therefore, to attempt to answer this question: Would uniform state-adopted textbooks for high schools of New Mexico be desirable from an educational and practical point of view?
To present an answer to the above question is the main purpose of the present investigation. Answers to the following three specific questions would seem to furnish a substantial basis for answering the principal question indicated: (1) What is the opinion of leaders in the …

Book Selection For A Teachers College Library, Robert E. Mcconnell
Book Selection For A Teachers College Library, Robert E. Mcconnell
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Education and Professional Studies
The selection of books and the distribution of library funds are considerations which call for the continuous attention of the college administrator. This is especially so in the case of teachers colleges because they are of recent development and are limited as to funds. Both time and money are essential to the building up of a library of quality and quantity. As compared with the well established liberal arts college, teachers colleges are at a disadvantage in that the former existed fifty years before the latter.

The County Supervisor And The Beginning Teacher, May L. Wood
The County Supervisor And The Beginning Teacher, May L. Wood
Bachelors’ Theses
Rural schools are unmistakably a real and integral part of our national system of education. Our educators have long been directing their best efforts towards improving methods of education, attitudes and standards. But unfortunately, our rural schools have not been able to partake sufficiently of all the good to be derived from these studies. Non-scholastic influences are operating against their best efficiency. An analysis of these non-scholastic influences is the purpose of this thesis.
This is not to be considered in any manner an arraignment of the rural schools as such. Rather, it is because of an appreciation of the …

The Place Of Private And Church Schools In The Education Of The State, Anna Elizabeth Falls
The Place Of Private And Church Schools In The Education Of The State, Anna Elizabeth Falls
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
In considering the relation of the private, parochial and denominational schools to the education of the State, it is well to bear in mind Sargent's statement that in that last analysis there is no such thing as a private school; that all schools are doing a public work, the work of the community in educating prospective citizens. It is this fact, that education in our American democracy has for its aim the making of a progressive and stable nation through efficiently trained citizens, each in his individual capacity and through his individual interests, that makes the problem of education difficult …

The Relationship Of Principal And Teacher. A Study Of Some Ways Of Improving Teachers In Service, Lillian Caryl Thies
Bachelors’ Theses
The title of this thesis is, ''The Relationship Between Principal and Teacher". Such a title may cover a great field, and instead of a single thesis, volumes might be written adequately to review it. I must therefore narrow the subject down, and after giving a general view of the position of the elementary school principal in the educational field and a sketch of his various powers and duties, I shall consider in more detail some ways in which he may help the elementary teacher to grow and to improve in service. There is gathering upon the subject, "The Principalship", a …
