Anxiety interferes with the learning processes and it affects performance in test situations. Yet in today’s test-conscious society, achievement and IQ tests are being used increasingly to evaluate the student, without benefit of information on his anxiety level. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of anxiety on achievement.

The sample population was drawn from the fourth, fifth, and sixth graders of an elementary school in the suburbs of a medium-sized city in the Southwest.

Adult basic education has only in recent years become an integral part of the total educational picture in New Mexico. Since 1964, federal funds under Title II, Part B of the Economic Opportunity Act, and more recently under Title III, Public Law 89-750 in the Amendments of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965, have been procured for the teaching of adults. Because of its relative newness no studies have been made in New Mexico which have identified the goals and motivations of the adult students who are participating in this program.

A taxonomy is a classifying device. There are essentially two types of taxonomies. The first is the non-hierarchial one, which is used to keep similar things together. The classification of English textbooks by subject, e.g., literature, spelling, and grammar would be non-hierarchial. The second is the hierarchial one, which is used to classify elements along some continuum. The classification of English literature books according to the relative difficulty of vocabulary would be hierarchial. In 1936, Dr. Lloyd Tireman conducted a study in which he analyzed the reading performance of Spanish-speaking children in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The results of this study showed that these children performed slightly above grade level in the first and second grades, but that they began to drop below grade level in the third grade. This drop continued through the grades until, in the eighth grade, these children were performing two years below grade level.
