This study analyzes and summarizes interviews with living past presidents of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), thus providing an oral history of this national association. Where periods of NAEYC are not represented by a living past president, Governing Board Meeting minutes and issues of NAEYC's journal were studied. To ensure continuity in the oral history, a summary of this information is included for the periods when past presidents are deceased. Through these interviews and minutes, an historical perspective was obtained which reveals the social, political, and economic atmosphere of the respective periods of presidency. Because …

The following paper is a description and analysis of a four-day teacher training workshop which took place in February and March of 1081 in Zacatecas, Mexico. It was designed to provide English teachers with the opportunity to experience various techniques that are currently used in teaching ESL. The design and implementation of the workshop are presented in detail. Although most portions of this book are applicable to the teaching of refugees in general, this work is meant to address specifically the needs of those engaged in teaching members of the Lao ethnic group of Laos. This materials development project consists of information and lesson plans related to eight patriotic holidays in the United States. It is intended to be used by English as a Second Language teachers in intermediate classes. Each unit consists of background information on a specific holiday, a lesson plan which included culture and grammar points, and follow-up activities. Each lesson includes three objectives: a sociolinguistic/cultural objective, a linguistic objective, and an interpersonal objective, which deals with the atmosphere in which the learning takes place. This paper examines the rationale and design of a series of skits which three others and I wrote and presented in Israel during the course of an "English-through-drama" program which we conducted in the public school system. A Curriculum To Increase Interest In Reading Using Children's Literature, Paula Forrest

The purpose of this project is to develop a resource of techniques using children's literature which will increase interest in reading for students who have met the minimum standards of reading for their grade level. The completed curriculum is to be used in grades kindergarten through six, with a flexible time limit of thirty to forty-five minutes per day, for fifteen school days.

A Comparative Evaluation Of Two Delivery Systems Of Mainstreaming In-Service Training For Regular Teachers Focusing On Child Change Variables, Glenn Earl Andis

This study was designed to evaluate mainstreaming in-service training practices for regular teachers which result in successful child change. The research design implemented was a quasi-experimental, nonequivalent control group design with a pretest and a posttest. There were three comparison groups: (a) mainstreamed children and classes of regular teachers who participated in a practicum model of mainstreaming in-service, (b) mainstreamed children and classes of regular teachers who participated in a videotape model of mainstreaming in-service, and (c) mainstreamed children and classes of regular teachers who received no treatment (control group) .

During the 1979-80 school year, two Algebra I classes were involved in a study to test the effects of two methods for reviewing homework problems on students' achievements and attitudes. One review procedure was to solve and explain each problem during the class period that followed the class period in which the homework assignment had been made. The other procedure involved solving and explaining only the problems that students requested to have reviewed. This project is a report on an ESL program developed for and taught to a Laotian couple who arrived in Brattleboro, Vermont in December 1979. The program took place from January to March 1980. The purpose of this report is to present and discuss issues, incidents, suggestions and conclusions regarding the teaching of ESL to Laotian refugees which may be helpful to program organizers and teachers.

The author describes her experience as TEFL Coordinator for a Peace Corps training program for both Americans and Africans in Togo. The background of TEFL training in Togo is outlined. The organization of the training program is presented, along with problems encountered and recommendations for future training programs. The author also discusses the content of the training program in light of the rationale and goals of training, and shares some personal insights gained as a result of her expereince. This project delineates an approach to ESOL that combines the teaching and learning of English with the facilitation of growth in self and cultural awareness - a greater knowledge of one's self and one's cultural molding.
