The field of school counseling is becoming increasingly evidence-based and results-driven. As a way to help Massachusetts’ schools develop school counseling programs, the Massachusetts School Counselors Association created the Massachusetts Accountability Report Card (MARC). We are school counseling interns at TechBoston Academy, a Boston Public School. Over the course of the 2010-2011 school year, we measured the effectiveness of our interventions and compiled them into a “MARC Jr.” The information we will present is a review of our MARC Jr., which focused on our school counseling curriculum for 11th grade students.

Graduate Coursework In College Counseling: An Exploratory Study Of The Certificate Programs Training Pathway In The United States, Christopher W. Tremblay, Ed.D

This research is a qualitative case study of graduate certificate programs offered in college counseling in the United States. This study presents historical and current information about eight different college counseling certificate programs and seven themes that describe these programs in the context of national college access and college readiness goals. Eight programs were identified at four schools in California, one school in Michigan, one school in Minnesota, and one school in Massachusetts. The Social Network film can serve as a helpful tool for student affairs educators to facilitate learning around issues related to student development theory and practice. In this media feature, we provide a brief synopsis and review of the film; outline student development theories and how they can be integrated into the main themes of the film; and describe how student affairs practitioners might apply key concepts and issues to several campus contexts.

Three faculty members from three different professional disciplines outline strategies to engage first-year students in a team-taught, multidisciplinary first-year experience course. The theme of the discussed section is titled "food for thought…and action." Assignments are grounded in theories of cooperative and experiential learning. Tentative outcomes and students’ reactions are shared. Practical suggestions are included for educators who wish to implement comparable initiatives at their respective institutions.

The recent spate of national reports criticizing both undergraduate and graduate education (National Endowment 1984; National Institute 1984; Association of American College 1985) has focused on a number of specific educational deficiencies, including an excessive narrowing a the discipline level, insufficient emphasis on academic research and scholarship, and an overemphasis on encyclopedic knowledge. Such criticisms have generated numerous efforts at program improvements by campus officials (Hawley 1989; Klemm 1988). Unfortunately, a dearth of knowledge about the fundamental educational processes of graduate programs has been a serious constraint on efforts to decide which of the numerous improvements will actually enhance student …
