Teacher Efficacy In Co-Teaching Science Classrooms: Implications For Training, Sabrina Christensen
Teacher Efficacy In Co-Teaching Science Classrooms: Implications For Training, Sabrina Christensen
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
Following legislation to educate students in the least restricted environment, schools are using co-taught inclusive settings to teach secondary science classrooms. Traditionally, general educators do not receive robust instruction in differentiation, co-teaching, or collaboration with special educators. Special educators traditionally do not receive training in science content. An online survey was distributed through social media inviting teachers to share their experiences with co-teaching in science classrooms. Likert scales were used to measure teacher efficacy in co-teaching secondary science classes and teacher perceptions of the effectiveness of current teacher training. Based on the data collected, recommendations are provided for adjustments to …
Developing Resiliency Skills Of Preschoolers Through Social-Emotional Behavioral Teaching Practices To Buffer Against Trauma And Increase Child Outcomes, Jill Mastin
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
This school improvement plan responds to challenges that preschool teachers face with the growing number of young children in their classrooms who have experienced trauma and exhibit serious, highly disruptive, and dangerous behaviors. All children benefit from early learning experiences that are rich in social-emotional learning. Research has shown that students with well developed emotional literacy, problem solving skills, and self-regulation skills have better outcomes into adulthood compared to peers who struggle with these skills. This school improvement plan aims to provide insight and guidance for Early Childhood Educational Programs by providing intentional professional development to build staff capacity for …

Over the last few decades, schools have seen an increase in the number of English learners entering their classrooms. Meeting the needs of English learners continues to be a topic for discussion. Schools and teachers across the United States are struggling to appropriately meet the unique learning needs of this demographic of students. English learners continue to be pushed through the educational system while the gap between them and their non-EL peers continues to widen. This school improvement plan was created with the intention of providing a professional development plan that focuses on improving teacher knowledge and providing teachers with …
Improving Social And Emotional Learning In Middle School, Casey Canaday
Improving Social And Emotional Learning In Middle School, Casey Canaday
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
Research shows that social-emotional learning has a direct impact on the academic and overall success of students in educational environments and beyond. Effective social-emotional programs and strategies implemented with fidelity can improve school climate and culture, positively impacting students, teachers, staff, and families. Without explicit teaching of social-emotional concepts, students are not given the opportunities to reach their full potential to be well-rounded individuals with developed social-emotional skills that support their overall wellness. The findings of a variety of research related to social-emotional learning guided the school improvement plan that was created to successfully implement social-emotional learning practices into schools. …

Multi-Tiered Professional Development System To Increase Paraprofessional Use Of Behavior Specific Praise, Lauren Phillips
Multi-Tiered Professional Development System To Increase Paraprofessional Use Of Behavior Specific Praise, Lauren Phillips
Theses and Dissertations--Early Childhood, Special Education, and Counselor Education
To further support learning in self-contained settings, it is crucial for both teachers and paraprofessionals to implement effective classroom and behavior management strategies. Behavior specific praise (BSP) is one strategy that has been taught to teachers and used in general education classrooms to increase positive student outcomes (Gage et al., 2017) In this study, we used a multi-tiered system for professional development to increase paraprofessionals’ rate of BSP in a self-contained special education setting during one-to-one instructional activities. The results of this study indicated that Tier 1 professional development was sufficient for the paraprofessionals, and it not only increased paraprofessionals’ …

Inclusive Education For All: Identifying Teacher Beliefs About Working With Students With Disabilities, Chelsea Sharek
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate the beliefs K-12 teachers have when working with students with disabilities in a rural Pennsylvania school district. This study aimed to identify if teachers’ personal beliefs created biases about their students and school systems; thus, forming barriers and preventing an inclusive education when working with disabled students. Instrumentation for this quantitative study is the Multidimensional Attitudes Towards Inclusive Education Scale (MATIES) survey. Findings suggest that some teachers at Sunnyside School District (pseudonym) hold personal beliefs that could create biases about their students and school system that may form barriers when working with …

Faculty Publications
For literacy coaches and teachers, feedback is an integral component of effective coaching. Yet, little is understood
about the interaction between feedback and high/low implementing teachers within coaching sessions. This multiple
case study explored the types of feedback literacy coaches provided both high and low implementing teachers over a
two-year period. In the first year, the literacy coaches provided at least twice as much instructional feedback as
emotional feedback to low-implementing teachers. Those teachers not only received more feedback in general, but the
feedback they received was primarily what they needed to do to improve. In contrast, during the same …

Multitiered systems for supporting students’ behavior in schools rely on teachers using generally effective classroom management strategies, such as Tier 1 practices. However, few tools exist to easily assess classwide Tier 1 practices. In this brief report, we describe one potential tool, the Classroom Atmosphere Rating Scale–Brief (CARS-B) and assess the properties of the tool using item response theory and multilevel models. We found that most items on the CARS-B had acceptable discriminations and difficulty estimates. Teachers’ CARS-B latent scores were positively associated with student group on-task. We discuss potential changes to the CARS-B and its use in research and …
The Relationship Of Mentorship And Professional Development On Special Educators’ Intent, Christine S. Powell
The Relationship Of Mentorship And Professional Development On Special Educators’ Intent, Christine S. Powell
Theses and Dissertations
Current literature in special education has examined professional development (PD) and mentorship separately; however, no studies have investigated the relationship between PD and mentorship on special education teachers’ intent. The purpose of this study was to examine the extent to which participating in PD and mentorship opportunities predicted the likelihood of Early Career Special Education Teachers' (ECSETs) intent to leave the teacher workforce while examining factors related to duration and quality. Based on two conceptual models, Desimone’s (2009) best practices for professional development and Nick et al. (2012) best practices for academic mentoring, this study identified key features and characteristics …

Paraprofessional Training: Working With Students With Disabilities, Patrice A. Thompson
Paraprofessional Training: Working With Students With Disabilities, Patrice A. Thompson
LC Journal of Special Education
The purpose of this literature review is to discuss current research related to paraprofessional training. According to Villa, Thousand, Nevin, and Malgeri (1996), paraprofessionals are an integral part of the inclusion of students with disabilities into the general education setting. The general education setting and curriculum can be defined as the place and content that students without disabilities receive and have access to in schools. Therefore, paraprofessionals require appropriate training and ongoing supports to help facilitate success of students with disabilities who access the general education curriculum (Villa et al., 1996). In order for students with disabilities to reach their …
Building Teacher Differentiation Self-Efficacy In The Classroom, Tyler Krattenmaker
Building Teacher Differentiation Self-Efficacy In The Classroom, Tyler Krattenmaker
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
The practice of inclusion has allowed more students with disabilities to participate with their peers in general education classrooms than ever before. However, research findings show that in many cases, educators have low self-efficacy when it comes to their ability to serve students with disabilities within their classrooms. Studies have documented a need for professional development to target inclusion and accommodations, showing that increased training increases teacher self-efficacy in implementing students supports. With this research in mind, a school improvement plan was developed that focuses on a professional development series to increase educator self-efficacy in implementing accommodations frequently included in …

A Review Of Integrated Embodied Therapies And Racial Healing In Public Schools, Grace Fosler
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Anti-Black racism lies in the social, political, and economic foundations of the United States of America. Race and racism are manifestations of unhealed generational trauma that negatively impact the minds and bodies of all Americans. Black children are exposed to institutional and interpersonal racism upon entering the public school system, leading many Black students to experience discrimination and segregation, exclusionary discipline, and juvenile entry into the Prison-Industrial Complex. Educators have a unique opportunity to engage in individual and collective racial healing while fostering social change and collective healing in students. An integrated approach of individualized coaching and group embodiment, dance/movement …

Journal of Educational Research and Practice
Inclusive education (IE) in the early years enhances young children’s learning, socialization, and development; yet, children with disability are one group that is often isolated, excluded, or marginalized in early childhood education. This paper examines jointly the perceived exclusion practices, teacher qualities, and professional development and the interplay and impact of these factors on effective inclusive early childhood education. Drawing on data collected from individual interviews with teachers and headteachers in a large early childhood and school setting in Ghana, findings of this qualitative study indicate the exclusion practices of teachers. The findings suggest that resistance to IE limits learning, …

Coaching Paraeducators To Accurately Record Student Response Data During Direct Instruction, Paige J. Carter Phd
Theses and Dissertations
Paraeducators serving students with disabilities outnumber special education teachers in the United States (Stewart, 2019; U. S. Department of Education et al., 2018). Paraeducators regularly provide instruction without the benefit of regular and effective training. One of the duties associated with instruction is the collection of instructional data. The purpose of this study was to examine a combination of training and coaching on the accuracy of recording student responses. In addition, a teacher-as-coach model was examined for feasibility with existing time and resources. A multiple baseline across participants design was planned. Special education teachers and paraeducators at a public separate …

Examining District Administrators’ Professional Development Decision-Making Processes Concerning New Special Education Teachers, Sarah J. Bacalia
Dissertations
New special education teachers face an abundance of challenges from day one that directly correlate to student outcomes (i.e. classroom management, instruction, curriculum, school culture and operations, test preparation and administration, state standards, parent relations, and interactions with other teachers). District administrators, (i.e. superintendents, assistant superintendents, curriculum and instruction directors, directors of student services, special education directors, and special education supervisors) play an important role in determining how to best use their districts' professional development time and resources to support new special education teachers as they work to continually improve student outcomes. Therefore, professional development should be a purposeful endeavor. …
