Racism In A Broken Special Education System, Andrew P. Johnson Jan 2020

Racism In A Broken Special Education System, Andrew P. Johnson

Elementary and Literacy Education Department Publications

This is an excerpt from my book, ‘Essential Learning Theories: The Human Dimension’ published by Rowman and Littlefield in 2021.

Disclaimer: The special education teachers I have had the privilege to work with over the years are making a difference lives of their students. However, they are often trapped in a system that is broken. This system puts limitations on what they are able to accomplish. In this chapter (article), I am referencing this larger system. I am not referencing any particular school, school district, university, or teacher preparation program.

A disability is not disorder or deficit; rather, it is …

The Effects Of Three Service Delivery Models On Vocabulary Learning By Second-Grade Children, Laura Stone Jan 2020

The Effects Of Three Service Delivery Models On Vocabulary Learning By Second-Grade Children, Laura Stone

Theses and Dissertations--Rehabilitation Sciences

Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) provide services to children in schools across the United States primarily in a direct small group service delivery model outside of the regular education classroom. To date little research exists to indicate that direct pull-out service delivery is an effective model in elementary schools for students requiring speech and language therapy. One area that has been studied is the effectiveness of vocabulary intervention among service delivery models. Preliminary findings suggest that students with language and literacy deficits learn vocabulary well within a regular education environment with SLP support. However, there is little consensus on how service delivery …

Resource Teachers And Multi-Tier Systems Of Supports: Black Males' Special Education Identification, Fredrick Brooks Jan 2020

Resource Teachers And Multi-Tier Systems Of Supports: Black Males' Special Education Identification, Fredrick Brooks

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

The disproportionality of students placed in special education programs continues to plague the education community, particularly Black male students. "For too many Black male students, learning difficulties or challenging behaviors come to be equated with disability, often without consideration of the way in which the environment of schools and classrooms contribute to student difficulties" (Jordan, 2016, p. 33). This study examined the lived experiences of resource teachers who lead Multi-tier Systems of Supports (MTSS) implementation in their schools. The study reviewed the extent to which their perceptions, perspectives, understandings, and feelings drive their problem solving and decision-making regarding referrals to …

Keeping Girls' Voices At The Center Of Our Work: A Phenomenological Study On The Discipline Experiences Of Black Girls With Disabilities, Whitney Hanley Jan 2020

Keeping Girls' Voices At The Center Of Our Work: A Phenomenological Study On The Discipline Experiences Of Black Girls With Disabilities, Whitney Hanley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Disciplinary exclusion is disproportionately enforced with Black students with disabilities. Researchers in this area typically examine the overuse of disciplinary exclusion using homogeneous samples narrowed by race, gender, or disability category; however, implications of the overuse and misuse of discipline have rarely been explored at the intersection of race, gender, and disability. Furthermore, Black girls with disabilities and their experiences with discipline are often muted, or overlooked. Due to perceived defiance, which current researchers support, the actions and choices of Black girls are under heightened surveillance. Responses to their behavior often results in inequitable use of discipline. A master narrative …

Improving The Sentence Writing Fluency Of A Student With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder And Speech/Language Impairment: A Pilot Study, Shawn M. Datchuk, Apryl L. Poch, K. L. Panos

Special Education and Communication Disorders Faculty Publications

The skill of sentence writing – the composition of connected text into sentence types understandable to readers – is foundational to written expression. Unfortunately, many students with learning disabilities – particularly those with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and speech and/or language impairment (S/LI) – struggle to develop sentence writing and its multiple, related skills. Using a single-baseline design, we studied effects of a supplemental writing intervention on one elementary-aged student with comorbid ADHD and S/LI. The intervention entailed delivery of a writing fluency intervention with several antecedent- and consequence-based components: explicit instruction, fluency practice, a reinforcer survey, and contingent …

Assessing The Perceived Effectiveness And Acceptability Of Pre-Referral Intervention Team Procedures By School Teams: Continued Validation Of The Pre-Referral Intervention Team, Lindsey A. Finch

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

The Pre-Referral Intervention Team Inventory (PRITI) is a 24-item Likert scale created to measure the perceived effectiveness and acceptability of pre-referral teams (PRTs) in a school setting. Initial studies have shown both two-factor and single-factor structures with high internal consistency. Acceptability of team procedures as measured by the PRITI showed expected relationships to the Team Climate Inventory (TCI) and the Revised Teacher Stress Inventory (RTSI). The results of initial studies suggest that the PRITI may be a useful measure for assessing school staff acceptability perceptions of PRT consultation procedures, but further validation is needed. For the current study, the responses …

A Review Of The Evidence Supporting Play-Based Learning For Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Josh Wilson Jan 2020

A Review Of The Evidence Supporting Play-Based Learning For Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Josh Wilson

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has become more prevalent through more diagnosis, with about 1 in 54 being diagnosed with ASD (Center for Disease Control, 2016). With more children being diagnosed with ASD, more services are needed. Adapted Physical Education (APE) is a direct service provided for children with disabilities, and APE teachers should use proven methods to effectively and efficiently assist these children in their area of need. Play-based learning has proven to help improve many social, communication, social skill engagement and play behaviors in children with ASD so play-based learning should be utilized more within the context of APE …

The Use Of Video Modeling To Teach Requesting For Conversational Repair In Vocational Situations, Bryn C. Handley Jan 2020

The Use Of Video Modeling To Teach Requesting For Conversational Repair In Vocational Situations, Bryn C. Handley

Theses and Dissertations--Early Childhood, Special Education, and Counselor Education

Video modeling has been found to be effective in teaching various skills to individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities. Despite this evidence, there is very little evidence to support using video modeling to teach specific soft skills in the workplace, such as requesting for conversational repair. This study evaluated the effects of video modeling on requests for conversational repair within vocational situations using a multiple probe research design. Due to unforeseen circumstances as a result of COVID-19, the study had to be concluded before all participants could receive intervention. However, an effect between video modeling and requests for conversational repair …

An Evaluation Of Sensory Paths As An Antecedent Intervention For Decreasing Off-Task Behavior In Children With Disabilities During Small Group Instruction, Hannah Keene Jan 2020

An Evaluation Of Sensory Paths As An Antecedent Intervention For Decreasing Off-Task Behavior In Children With Disabilities During Small Group Instruction, Hannah Keene

Theses and Dissertations--Early Childhood, Special Education, and Counselor Education

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of sensory paths as an antecedent intervention to decrease off-task behavior and increase on-task behavior in three elementary-aged participants with disabilities. A withdrawal design was used to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention. The results are corollary due to the unintentional A-B design (schools closed during this time period). There is some evidence that the sensory path intervention was no more effective in decreasing off-task behavior and increasing on-task behavior than baseline conditions. Future research is needed to further investigate the sensory path intervention.

Using Response Cards In Inclusive Classrooms, Kaitlin Ayers Jan 2020

Using Response Cards In Inclusive Classrooms, Kaitlin Ayers

Theses and Dissertations--Early Childhood, Special Education, and Counselor Education

Inclusive classrooms consist of students with and without disabilities. It is often difficult for teachers to find ways to incorporate all students equally in classroom discussions. Often students with disabilities tend to participate less than their typically developing peers. For teachers to be effective in their classroom it is important for them to follow high leverage practices. One high-leverage practice strategy for teachers to incorporate in their classroom is the use of response cards (RCs). Response cards are evidence-based practices for increasing active engagement, academic achievement, on-task behavior, as well as decreasing problem behaviors. In order for students to have …

Adapting School-Wide Positive Behavior Interventions And Supports To Meet The Needs Of Students With Significant Disabilities, Amy Hazel Hansen

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a multi-tiered system of support for addressing discipline problems in schools through proactive and positive discipline procedures, guided by evidenced-based behavioral interventions across a continuum based on student need. Within the 1997 amendments to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), there was a mandate for PBIS and functional behavior assessments to be utilized with students with disabilities. Schools have since made the shift toward creating school-wide PBIS or commonly known as School Wide Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports (SWPBIS) to support behavior for all students, not only those with disabilities. In this …

Parent Knowledge Of The Definition Of Fape In Light Of The Endrew Vs. Douglas County School Board Decision, Karin M. Fisher Ph.D., Cassandra B. Willis Ph.D., Barbara E. Ransom J.D.

The Journal of Special Education Apprenticeship

In 2017, the Supreme Court of the United States redefined Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) for students with disabilities (SWD) in Endrew F. v. Douglas County School District. The Court’s new standard for FAPE was more demanding than previous rulings. Parents of SWD are expected to participate in the special education program process and a more robust Individualized Education Program (IEP) should be implemented to ensure sufficient student progress. However, it is unknown how much parents know about the Endrew F. Case and what, if any, impact the case had on IEP meetings since the ruling. To determine knowledge …

Adhd Parent And Teacher Symptom Ratings: Differential Item Functioning Across Gender, Age, Race, And Ethnicity, George J. Dupaul, Qiong Fu, Arthur D. Anastopoulos, Robert C. Reid, Thomas J. Power

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

Parent and teacher ratings of the two attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptom dimensions (i.e., inattention, hyperactivity-impulsivity) have been found to differ across child gender, age, race, and ethnicity. Group differences could be due to actual variation in symptomatic behaviors but also could be due to measurement items functioning differently based on child characteristics. This study extended prior investigations establishing measurement invariance at the symptom dimension and item levels, by examining possible measurement variance across child demographic characteristics at the item level (i.e., differential item functioning [DIF]) in two large national samples. Using the Rasch rating scale model (Andrich Psychometrika, 43, …

AAC systems may be accessed via techniques such as touch, eye gaze and switch scanning, which are then translated into communication output. Traditionally, aided AAC displays utilize a grid layout, arranging communication items in a decontextualized manner. In contrast, visual scene displays (VSDs) utilize context rich images (e.g., photographs) that depict events and activities, presenting communication items in a contextualized manner (e.g., a toy in a toy chest; Wilkinson, Light, & Drager, 2012). Recent research focusing on principles of the visual-cognitive sciences has found that even small changes in how we present communication items in a grid or VSD format …

A Review Of Factors And Display Characteristics Influencing P300 Brain-Computer Interface Performance For Aac., Kevin Pitt Jan 2020

A Review Of Factors And Display Characteristics Influencing P300 Brain-Computer Interface Performance For Aac., Kevin Pitt

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

For individuals with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), neurodegeneration can lead to a state of near-total paralysis, with intact cognition and sensation (Fried-Oken. et al., 2013). This loss of voluntary speech and motor system control (including oculomotor) can cause individuals with ALS to lose a reliable form of communication. Brain-computer interfaces for AAC (BCI-AAC) can provide a non-invasive link between an individual’s neurologic activity and a communicational device via electroencephalography (EEG), circumventing the necessity of reliable motor control for AAC access. Different BCI techniques may afford communication access through a range of techniques such as the P300 (including rapid serial visual …
