Anxiety affects school achievement and is common in nearly every disability category treated by Special Education programs. This thesis explores a difficult subject for both parents and special educators: the use of restraint and seclusion in the classroom. While no teacher wants to go hands-on with a student, crisis situations can arise in which a student becomes a threat to themselves or others. In these moments restrictive procedures are employed to maintain safety, but this does not address the underlying issues that caused the unsafe behavior in the first place, or prevent the behavior from occurring again. This literature review examines the relationship between PBIS interventions and the effectiveness of implementation on factors that hinder academic success for students receiving special education services. The factors of focus included office referral rates in regards to student behaviors, attendance, on task behaviors, and motivation for students. Minnesota Rule 8719.5000 requires that special education teachers assess how environmental factors impact students during the evaluation process. Despite evidence explaining how environmental factors impact student achievement and behaviors, there is not a formal tool available to special education teachers that allows them to assess how classroom environment might influence a student. This project provides an extensive literature review examining how classroom ecology (the combined elements of the physical environment and social environment) impact student achievement. Extent Of Student-College Matching For Students Enrolled In Special Education Services, Katherine C. Aquino, Ryan P. Hudes

This study investigates the prevalence of postsecondary student-college match for students enrolled in special education services at the secondary education level by using data from the Education Longitudinal Study of 2002. This study examines alternative student-college match scenarios – including undermatch, match, and overmatch – and addresses the gap in research specific to college match and students in special education. Findings indicate that students who enrolled in special education services in high school undermatched to schools they had the potential of enrolling in. Moreover, undermatching for this student group increased if students were Black, Hispanic, or of low socioeconomic status.

The gender distribution in special education is skewed heavily toward boys, who outnumber girls at an overall rate of 2 to 1. This study examined the impact of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) with parents from different cultures all over the world. The literature review focused on ways negative and positive outcomes impacted parents and caregivers raising children with autism. The results showed that even though parents and caregivers experienced high stress levels and difficult times, they gained a better perspectives and coping skills when learning to accept the autism disability. Studying information from other cultures and autism provides greater understanding about how autism impacts the Hmong community, when parents are raising a child with autism.

Over half million children with traumatic brain injuries (TBI) pass through United States emergency departments each year. While there is Return-to-Play legislation in all 50 states, in response to sports-related concussion, there are very few Return-to-Learn protocols in place in the nation’s public schools. The Second Circuit Court of Appeals has declared that “Prior decisions of this Court are consistent with the Supreme Court’s decision in Endrew F.,” the 2017 Supreme Court decision interpreting the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act obligation to furnish students with disabilities free, appropriate public education. This Essay considers whether that statement is accurate, and concludes that while some of the past Second Circuit decisions fit comfortably with Endrew F. ex rel. Joseph F. v. Balance disorders present a significant healthcare burden due to the potential for hospitalization or complications for the patient, especially among the elderly population when considering intangible losses such as quality of life, morbidities, and mortalities. This work is a continuation of our earlier works where we now examine feature extraction methodology on Dynamic Gait Index (DGI) tests and machine learning classifiers to differentiate patients with balance problems versus normal subjects on an expanded cohort of 60 patients.
