The purpose of this paper is to identify how movement affects a student’s academics and behavior within the academic setting. Through research, it was identified that the four main types of movement integration are movement breaks, active lessons, physical activity and physical education. The researchers that focused on the effects on academics used classroom based measures (CBMs) and standardized test to measure the impact of movement. The researchers that focused on the effects of behavior used trained observers and standardized concentration test. Primary caregivers of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) face various specific challenges no matter the severity of their child’s ASD. Children with autism experience difficulty with social interaction and communication and experience restricted or repetitive thoughts or patterns of behavior. Parents of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) face challenges directly related to their child’s diagnosis. Parenting a child with autism exhibits high amounts of stress, and affects mothers and fathers differently. This paper set out to explore the current discipline methods that schools use, and the effects (positive or negative) of each method. Relevant literature articles were reviewed and analyzed. This paper identifies the risk factors shared by students who receive special education services under the category of emotional and behavioral disorders and gang affiliated youth. It also recognizes the role an educator can play in the identification of these risk factors and the prevention of gang involvement. The connection between both focus groups is profound and often a result of an environment not chosen by the student. Through educator awareness, early intervention and ongoing efforts, students with emotional and behavioral disorders may be dissuaded from affiliation changing not only their lives but potentially future lives.

Adverse childhood experiences have been found to increase the likelihood of immediate and long-term negative impacts on children. Adverse childhood experiences are complex traumatic events that can produce a powerful stress response in a child’s brain and body, which has the potential to influence their development. Children with adverse traumatic experiences are at an increased risk for altered neurodevelopment due to the influence of toxic stress. Research has shown this altered development to be associated with many negative outcomes, including adopting health risk behaviors, disease, behavior problems, and social, emotional and cognitive impairment. This empirical research literature review was conducted in order to better understand the effects that students' choice and preference have on increasing academic performance rates and decreasing disruptive behaviors within classroom and residential settings for students with disabilities. 30 peer reviewed publications were included in this review and were organized into sections pertaining to instructional/material choice, task-sequence choice, preference/task choice, and consequence (reward) choice. Results from this study provide evidence that implementing choice and preference into the classroom setting can decrease disruptive classroom behavior while simultaneously increasing student work performance.

This literature review examines studies that investigated and evaluated the relationship between physical activity and academic achievement in students with disabilities. Research was found and reviewed that used school-aged participants, exercise or physically movement interventions, and standardized tests to measure academic achievement. Several brain regions are involved in both cognitive and motor tasks, which has sparked interest in this area of study. The studies reviewed showed that there is a positive relationship between being more physically active and having improved cognitive abilities. This article describes the origin and curriculum of Identity Dialogues, a program which facilitates conversations about power and privilege among international and domestic students. It was developed as a result of findings from an ethnographic study of an unstructured conversation partner program at the same institution. The study found that power-laden issues were influencing the interactions and confirmed that intercultural competence development has to be actively facilitated (Bennett, 2009). Identity Dialogues sessions start with an examination of participants’ own cultural histories and then they are guided to analyze stereotypes and microaggressions. Throughout this practitioner-oriented paper, we provide a rationale, framework, and supporting materials to promote the development and implementation of personalized, contextualized, and holistic individualized education plans (IEPs) with a strength-based orientation. We believe that adopting strength-based IEP writing practices is vital to reconstructing students with disabilities as capable contributors to their inclusive classrooms. The use of strengths-based approaches is not necessarily new, however supporting individuals’ needs in a strength-based model has been largely overlooked in special education. Children labeled with Emotional Behavior Disorder (EBD), as defined by the educational system, have behavioral factors that impact their educational success in school. Research suggests that social skills instruction, mindfulness training, and positive behavior supports promoted behavioral changes. Research indicated that promoting pro-social skills and using teaching consequences result in a reduction of out-of-school suspension rates. Following a literature review, a teaching intervention was constructed and implemented for students identified with EBD in a secondary setting. Phonics Instruction has had a controversial history. How to teach phonics to Spanish-speaking ELs is also controversial. Understanding the differences between Spanish and English and how phonics instruction occurs in each language would be insightful. Also, knowing how the nature of the two languages affects instruction would be beneficial. Furthermore, exploiting similarities between English and Spanish and examining differences will bolster instruction. This paper will discuss the reasons for word study and how it may be utilized to teach spelling and decoding to Spanish-speaking ELLs.
