Dance/movement therapy (DMT) techniques—particularly choreography and performance techniques—have not been well-researched with Deaf adults who have mental illness. This study investigated the use of DMT, choreography, and performance techniques with Deaf adults with severe and chronic mental illness through participatory artistic inquiry. Primary research questions addressed pragmatic matters of participatory artistic inquiry: What aesthetic choices will the co-researchers make in the dance-making process? This study examined the effect that a classroom-wide positive behavior support (CW-PBS) has on decreasing the inappropriate behaviors of students with autism. In addition, individualized positive behavior strategies (e.g. teaching replacement behavior, self-monitoring) were provided simultaneously together with the CW-PBS to further examine the decrease of inappropriate behavior occurrences. This study aimed at evaluating a sample of six fourth graders with learning disabilities as they were taught Collaborative Strategic Reading. The program was taught by a special education teacher in a self-contained classroom over a period of 5 weeks. Mean comprehension scores increased slightly over the course of the study while their vocabulary scores remained relatively consistent. Student average scores in vocabulary understanding were slightly higher than their comprehension scores. Although average scores increased, individual student performance was inconsistent. These results suggest that students with learning disabilities require more time to learn and develop strategies in comprehension. The findings …

Suicide is the third leading cause of death among youth and young adults ages 10--24. In 2001 the U.S. Surgeon General laid out a national strategic plan to more effectively address suicide prevention (United States Public Health Service, 2001). In 2008, Gene Cash, then president of The National Association of School Psychologists, made a "call to action" to prevent suicide. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of Direct Instruction (DI) for teaching oral comprehension to students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). A total of eight students, ages six through eight in a special education classroom participated in the study. They were taught lessons from a scripted DI program 10-15 minutes daily for 10 weeks. Students completed daily oral lessons followed by a worksheet to check for their understanding. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether or not the use of technology would increase automaticity of basic subtraction facts with "at risk" students and whether or not self-monitoring would motivate "at risk" students to improve their math scores to achieve automaticity of basic subtraction facts. Praise notes have the potential to positively influence student behavior and relationships. Few studies have examined the social validity of praise, however, and these studies have focused on students' perceptions. The purpose of this study was to describe student, parent, and teacher perceptions of a school-wide praise note intervention at a Title I elementary school. Twenty-three teachers, 203 parents, and 203 students completed surveys regarding a pre-existing praise note intervention. Surveys consisted of 13 quantitative items and two open-ended questions. Quantitative and qualitative results indicate that participants had positive perceptions of praise notes. Participants also believed that praise notes helped …

This study was done to examine the effect of the 20 Word Chant on student's ability to recall sight words. The participants were from various backgrounds, ability levels, disabilities. The students were exposed to two presentation formats. The 20 Word Chant was added to the daily routine as well as the daily flash card drill. The class was split into two groups and was exposed to both models. The students were given a one-on-one sight word fluency pre and post test. What Are Parents' Opinions Towards Their Children's Transition From School To Adulthood?, Michelle Moore

The purpose of this research was to determine if training affected parent attitudes towards the transition planning process. Twenty-one parent volunteers participated in this study. Parents answered survey questions about their attitudes before attending two training sessions. A second survey was then completed to determine if there was a significant difference in responses after training. A pre-post survey design was used where means were compared using ANOVA. The results showed a statistical significant difference in question 6 "I know that my child has a behavior plan" in favor of the training, and no significances between pre-post responses to other questions.

Data related to the adjustment to school of 86 children with disabilities who transitioned into formal school settings in the fall of 2011 were obtained through 31 parent surveys (Transition to School Parent Survey) and 64 teacher surveys (Transition to School Teacher Survey). Data from the subscales of these surveys were used to examine the predictive association between family preparation for the transition (as measured by parent satisfaction and parent involvement) and parent-rated child adjustment to school, and between receiving teacher support (as measured by teacher practices) and teacher-rated child adjustment to school. This research was a qualitative program evaluation of students' perceptions of Latinos in Action (LIA), a peer-mentoring program that seeks to improve high school Latino graduation rates and college admittance. The study was conducted with college students who participated in the program in high school. Research indicates that, in some instances, siblings can be a first line of defense when a child experiences bullying. Research also shows that children with disabilities are often prime targets of bullying. However, no research was located that specifically explored the relationship between siblings of children with disabilities, their perceptions of bullying and the roles that they play when bullying occurs. This study investigated siblings' perceptions of bullying through a qualitative interview. Twelve participants ranged in age from 7 to 13. A survey of recent medical studies show a rise each year in the number of people diagnosed with A.D.D., or Attention Deficit Disorder. However, pastors have not been adequately educated on how to effectively communicate, counsel, and minister to those with A.D.D. The goal of this project is to educate pastors and church leaders about the nature of A.D.D., the statistics, the symptoms, so that they may better understand how to minister to these people in their congregation. Medical statistics, findings, and new approaches to preaching and ministering will be utilized in this project to fulfill the goal.

The purpose of this systematic grounded theory study was to explain how problems inherent in co-teaching relationships are resolved by secondary school special education and general education teachers at an urban school district in Eastern Iowa. The participants were general and special education secondary school teachers involved in effective co-teaching partnerships. Social skill instruction is needed in both targeted and universal contexts. This research utilized a universal social skill intervention, Book in a Bag (BIB), to increase the use of a specific social skill by all students within an elementary school, including students identified as at-risk for behavior problems. Familiar artwork, situations, and characters help Latino immigrant children identify with the stories. The need for psychotherapy outcome research is growing in Japan as the societal demands for psychotherapy have increased in recent years. Although researchers in Japan recognize the importance of integrating clinical practice and empirical research in evaluating psychotherapy outcome, most Japanese studies to date have relied heavily on qualitative case studies (Haebara, 1997; Kanazawa, 2004; Tanno, 2001).
