Reading Achievement: A Comparison Of Inclusion, Pull-Out, And Combined Approaches For Students With Learning Disabilities, Ethel J. Jones
Theses and Dissertations
More children are referred for special needs because of their reading problems than in any other areas, and concerns on programs to assist students with learning disabilities were raised, (Bos & Vaughn, 1993). The purpose of this study was to examine if these students would gain reading achievements when they were instructed in an inclusive, pull-out, or combined program. A total of 36 students with learning disabilities from grades 2 and 3 participated in this study. They were enrolled in inclusion, pull-out, and combined programs respectively. The pretest and posttest of the Jerry L. Johns Basic Reading Inventory were administered …

Theses and Dissertations
The purposes of this explorative study were to (a) compare results of the mathematics achievement of a group of secondary students with learning disabilities with and without computer-assisted instruction (n = 10) ; and (b) examine student satisfaction with computer-assisted instruction. The participants, ages 14-16 years old, were classified with SLD, or "Specific Learning Disability", and had mathematics performance significantly below grade level according to their IEPs. Procedure included ten weeks of teacher-direct instruction and ten weeks of computer-assisted instruction in the computer lab. A total of eight mathematics units were covered, four during each condition of the study. Students …

A Comparison Of The Effects Of Integrating Special Education Preschoolers With Their Nondisabled Peers, Christina Donio Sansone
Theses and Dissertations
This study examined developmental outcomes associated with services in inclusive and self-contained preschool classrooms. The growth of nine inclusive special education students and twelve self-contained students were investigated. These students were matched for chronological age and classification. Progress was measured with the Brigance Diagnostic Inventory of Early Development-Revised using a posttest only design in gross motor skills, fine motor skills, speech/language skills and general knowledge. Results show that there is a significant difference between these two groups on gross motor standing skills in the inclusive setting. There are no significant differences in other skill achievement.

Social Outcomes Of Inclusion On Adolescent Male Students With Asperger's Syndrome, Marc Cannuli
Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this research is to find whether students who have Asperger's Syndrome benefit in social skills from being included in the regular classroom. Despite the positive effects that may occur for the student being in the regular setting, it is hypothesized that the social skill deficits and behaviors of a student with Asperger' s Syndrome will not affect their success in the regular education setting. A self-contained classroom was compared to an inclusion classroom using four male subjects with Asperger's. Appropriate conversations and two-way conversations were observed. Collection of data consisted of counting occurrences and finding the means …

A Study Of The Impact Of The Picture Exchange Communication System On Verbal Language And Stereotypic Behavior In Preschool Children With Autism, Theresa Caratozzolo
Theses and Dissertations
The Picture Exchange Communication System was designed to give children with autism, developmental disorders, and social-communication disorders a way to communicate with the world around them. It is a picture based communication device that puts emphasis on the child initiating interactions. PECS utilizes many behavioral teaching techniques such as shaping, fading, backward chaining, and delayed prompting to teach children to make requests and communicate with others.
Even with the emphasis on spontaneous interactions without the use of speech, verbal language is likely to develop as a secondary outcome for those children who have the ability to develop and use speech. …

Visual-Motor Integration Training And Its Effects On Self-Help Skills In Preschool Students With Disabilities, Kimberley L. Maneval
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine whether structured visual-motor integration training activities aid in the acquisition and refinement of self-help skills in preschool children with disabilities. Research has shown that visual-motor integration training can be beneficial in the remediation of some reading and math difficulties, however, not all researchers agree on the merits of structured training for young children. The experimental group for this study received twenty-three visual-motor integration training sessions over the course of thirteen weeks, in addition to the regular visual-motor integration training activities presented in the regular daily curriculum. The control group only received visual-motor …
