Applied Science: Integrating Science And Vocational Education For Students With Mild Disabilities And Students Without Disabilities, Maurene R. Fink

All Graduate Projects

The study addresses the educational needs of students with disabilities and students without disabilities in the vocational and scientific fields while meeting the business community's needs for skilled employees. The project allows students to receive the advanced science credit as well as prepare students transitioning directly from school to work. Interviews of employers indicated that current educational systems do not adequately address the needs of the business community. Bellingham businesses are eager to participate with Bellingham High School in cooperative education programs.

Using American Sign Language With A Direct Instruction Mathematics Program To Affect The Mathematics Achievement Of Deaf Students, Annette J. Bass Jun 1993

Using American Sign Language With A Direct Instruction Mathematics Program To Affect The Mathematics Achievement Of Deaf Students, Annette J. Bass

Masters Theses

The effectiveness of supplemental instruction using a scripted direct instruction program, Connecting Math Concepts (Englemann & Carnine, 1992), with four lower elementary deaf students was compared to the effectiveness of supplemental instruction in their traditional math curriculum, Mathematics Today (Abbott, 1985). A two-phase multiple baseline design across students was used. During the first phase, the students' achievement on curricula-based math probes was assessed while using the Mathematics Today as a supplement. During the second phase, the students' achievement was assessed while using Connecting Math Concepts as a supplement. The teacher presentation scripts in this program were translated into American Sign …

Hands-On Support Materials For Schoolwide Science Project In Middle Schools, Jane Y. Grizzle Jan 1993

Hands-On Support Materials For Schoolwide Science Project In Middle Schools, Jane Y. Grizzle

Theses and Dissertations

The establishment of a Chapter 1 Schoolwide Project middle school created a need to develop a hands-on science program for middle school students with academic deficiencies. This program considered the following criteria: (a) academic needs of adolescent learners, (b) validation of hands-on methods for middle school students, and (c} design of a classroom facility to accommodate hands-on activities. It was the purpose of this project to plan and implement such a program.

Calculators In Special Education Mathematics Classes In A Junior High School, Celia M. Hurley Jan 1991

Calculators In Special Education Mathematics Classes In A Junior High School, Celia M. Hurley

Theses and Dissertations

Very little has been written about the use of calculators by children with exceptional needs, although calculators are already being used by most adults who seldom do any but the simplest calculations by hand (Thorpe, 1988). They use calculators for everything from balancing checkbooks to computing sales tax.

Yet there are teachers and many parents who believe, says Wheatley (1984), that using calculators will lessen the opportunity for students to master basics. They believe that calculators should not be used until children become proficient with paper-and-pencil calculations. Some say that students should become facile in the use of calculators. Still …

A Comparison Of Emotionally Disturbed Adolescents' Math Achievement On The Wrat Piat And Key Math, Bridget Dalton Gorman Jul 1982

A Comparison Of Emotionally Disturbed Adolescents' Math Achievement On The Wrat Piat And Key Math, Bridget Dalton Gorman

Communication Disorders & Special Education Theses & Dissertations

This study investigated performance on the Key Math, WRAT Arithmetic and FIAT Math subtests. One hundred thirty emotionally disturbed adolescents undergoing inpatient treatment at a psychiatric hospital were administered the FIAT and WRAT. Sixty low math achievers were also administered the Key Math. Sixty-five subjects each were assigned to the Average Achievement and Below Average Achievement groups based on FIAT total test scores, FIAT math and WRAT arithmetic grade equivalent scores (GE) and standard scores (SS) correlated significantly for all groups. Key Math GE scores correlated significantly with FIAT math and WRAT arithmetic GE scores. Analyses of variance were computed …
