The lack of research studies relevant to faculty attitudes impacting the learning environment for learning disabled students led this research to investigate the actual practices of faculty teaching accommodations in the classroom context. 111 This study was conducted with 523 faculty members at Indiana State University, a midsize Midwestern university. 160 faculty members responded to a survey of required and recommended accommodations made for learning disabled students in the classroom and the statistical data analysis included descriptive statistics, t-tests, and logistic regression. Students with LD may show deficiencies in selective attention, both visual and auditory, which can affect interpretation of social situations. The Stroop Test is often used to gauge selective attention to congruent and incongruent visual stimuli. In this experiment , the Stroop Test, and a similar researcher­ conducted task based on the depiction of emotions paired with congruent and incongruent words and an emotional task, involving emotional words paired with incongruent pictures depicting people with different facial expressions, were presented to college students with and without LD. A survey questionnaire was sent to forty-nine full time faculty members in the fall of 1996. Thirty-nine {80%) faculty members at a small four year, predominantly liberal arts college in central Virginia, responded to the questionnaire. The questionnaire was concerned with providing instructional accommodations, assignment accommodations, examination accommodations, and academic policy accommodations for students who have learning disabilities. Data were analyzed using t-tests and a one way analysis of variance. The variables included were gender, professional position, interaction with students who have learning disabilities, total years teaching at the college level, and whether or not the faculty member has taken …

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether or not the directors of support centers are prepared to meet the needs of students with learning disabilities in college. The subjects in this study were selected from all two and four year public schools from three states. They responded to a questionnaire about their training and the pertinence of their training to their work . The data were analyzed using a Pearson-r to examine the relationship between the variables . All questions were found to be statistically significant. The Relationship Between The Attitudes Of Directors And Instructors And Student Ratings In Remedial And Developmental Studies In Tennessee's Community Colleges, Carolyn H. Brown

The purpose of this study was to determine if a relationship existed between the attitudes of remedial and developmental directors and instructors and student ratings. A population of 230 full-time directors and instructors and 3,269 remedial students were surveyed in the Fall of 1990. The return rate was 95% for the directors and instructors with the student rate dependent upon instructors administering the instruments. Two instruments were developed--one to measure the attitudes of directors and instructors and one for student ratings of instructors. Seven null hypotheses were formulated; 5 were retained and 2 rejected, at the.05 level of significance. Factor …

This research study addressed the question, "Is there a difference in psychosocial developmental levels, as defined by Arthur Chickering, between male and female traditional-aged urban university freshmen with and without learning disabilities?" Twenty students with learning disabilities, as diagnosed by independent practitioners who exhibited spelling disabilities on a writing sample placement test, were compared to two comparable groups of twenty students. One comparison group did not exhibit spelling disability. The second group while demonstrating spelling problems, did not have documentation of learning disabilities. This study presents an evaluation of the 1971-1972 undergraduate program in special education at Central Washington State College. Copies of the evaluating instrument were sent to 75 1971-1972 graduates of the special education program. The results from the 41 instruments returned were tabulated and evaluated. Recommendations were based on the data received.

It was the purpose of the study (1) to evaluate the use of a token reinforcement system in modifying the attending behavior of a distractible child; (2) to demonstrate a technique which a teacher may find useful in helping the distractible child learn to manage his own attention; and (3) to show the relationship between attending behavior and academic performance.
