Increasing Reading Fluency In Students With Reading Difficulty, Kathryn Balabanis Peabody

Four methods designed to increase reading fluency were employed in a primary level Special Education resource room. The methods were implemented in accordance with the theory and research regarding reading fluency. Each of the four methods effectively increased the students' ability to read fluently. However, the implementation of these methods varied in cost and time.

Supplimental Functional Reading Materials For Secondary Moderately Retarded Students, Kimberlie Ann Baglau

Reading materials were compiled that would help secondary moderately retarded students develop reading skills needed to function at a more independent level than in the past. Materials were developed in the form of worksheets. These worksheets were designed to be supplemental materials to be used to reinforce the learning of functional sight words. Materials were produced for two types of functional reading: reading labels on medicine bottles and reading bus schedules.

As the movement to integrate students with handicaps into regular education classrooms continues, regular education teachers are a critical component of the successful implementation of the integration process. Because building principals must assume responsibility for selecting the teachers who will be assigned integrated classrooms, this investigation determined the degree to which principals were able to predict the attitudes of regular education teachers toward the integration of students with handicaps.

Children in the Duval County School System in Jacksonville, Florida, who are low/average achievers have to compete in a multi-graded classroom atmosphere. These students are passed along supported by low minimum-based competency test scores. The purpose of this project was to show teachers how they can present mnemonic procedures to these students in an effort to help these students raise test scores, boost self-esteem, and provide a self-help study device that can aid their progress in subsequent grades, aid morale, and thus avoid potential drop-outs in the system. Parents play an important role in the educational process, especially with Special Education students. When a child is identified as Learning Disabled, parents often ask, "What can we do at home to help?" When there is parent-school cooperation and coordination all will benefit, particularly the child. This project provides parents of the Selah School District in Washington State with information and activities in the academic areas of reading, mathematics, and written language, that will reinforce and strengthen those skills taught at school.

The need for teaching social skills, imagery, relaxation, and self-talk was studied and confirmed. Review and use of many of these curriculums revealed overlap among some curriculums, but none fully integrated skills from each of the diverse approaches to teaching social competence. The purpose of this project was to integrate a select body of information addressing social skills, self-talk, relaxation, and imagery into a developmental curriculum for use with children and adolescents.

Materials in the Special Education classrooms at two junior high schools and one high school in Walla Walla, Washington, were correlated to the objectives in the Brigance Diagnostic Inventory of Essential Skills. A quick reference guide was developed to assist the educator in compiling appropriate materials to meet the needs of the student as identified by the aforementioned inventory. The looseleaf guide not only allows for quick identification of materials, but also lends itself to continuous updating and revising.

The Effect Of An Intensive Study Skills Approach On Grade Point Average Of Secondary Learning Disabled Students, Jeanne Lancaster Vaughan

This study compared an intensive study skills approach with remedial instruction in basic skills for their effects on grade point average of secondary learning disabled students. The experimental group consisted of 12 students, as did the control group. Grade point was tabulated at the onset and conclusion of the study. The statistical analysis consisted of a t-test which showed no significance at the .05 level. The null hypothesis was retained. Discussion follows.

The purpose of this study was to design a developmental curriculum of activities for nonambulatory-multiply handicapped preschoolers, ages birth to 5 years. Visual motor, fine motor, and sensory skills were the areas specifically designed for the curriculum. A review of literature was conducted, investigating current information of curriculum for preschool nonambulatory-multiply handicapped children. Samples of curriclum from a variety of preschool project models were examined. A compilation of data resulted in a preschool curriculum for nonambulatory-multiply handicapped children.

A curriculum enrichment guide was developed to help intermediate special education teachers to adapt social studies material to meet the needs of each individual special education student. Eight supplemental units were developed to be used in conjunction with the Follett Social Studies text Exploring Our World: The Americas, level 5, (Ahlschwede, 1977). Each unit included: 1) key concepts; 2) vocabulary; 3) strategies for instruction; and 4) student involvement.

A preschool model for 3-5 year old rural handicapped children is based on developmental skills in the areas of receptive and expressive language acquisition, fine and gross motor movement and beginning cognitive skills. Also included, to facilitate the establishment of a new rural preschool is a list of materials needed to begin the program and a list of free and low cost legal, medical, and assessment services. The need for rural preschool programs is discussed as well as reasons for growth of preschool in Washington state.

This study was designed to evaluate mainstreaming in-service training practices for regular teachers which result in successful child change. The research design implemented was a quasi-experimental, nonequivalent control group design with a pretest and a posttest. There were three comparison groups: (a) mainstreamed children and classes of regular teachers who participated in a practicum model of mainstreaming in-service, (b) mainstreamed children and classes of regular teachers who participated in a videotape model of mainstreaming in-service, and (c) mainstreamed children and classes of regular teachers who received no treatment (control group) .

The purpose of the study was to determine if the skills acquired by trainees in the tutorial experience of the University of Northern Iowa competency-based program act as predictors in the group instruction experience.

This end was accomplished by comparing the scores obtained in the Phase I individual performance criteria against the composite score received in Phase II. A Pearson product moment correlation coefficient analysis was used to determine which individual Phase I criteria correlated significantly with the Phase II composite score. Recognizing a need to develop religious instructional material for mentally retarded seminary students of the L.D.S. Church, this study was designed to validate an instructional model set up to teach the concept of faith.

Thirty-four mentally retarded seminary students were randomly assigned to six control groups and six experimental groups. Each group was given a sixteen question pre-test. Then, the next day each experimental group was given instructional treatment and the post-test, while the control groups only received the post-test.
