This Innovative Practice Full Paper presents our study of promoting critical thinking and achievement in mathematics with the use of technology via easily accessible resources. We believe that creating easy-to-use learning modules that are accessible for students everywhere is a great way to help students comprehend abstract logic process in problem solving. This project investigated whether adding subtitles to educational videos increases learning among middle school students. A convenience sample (N=387) of Technology and Engineering middle school students were separated into two groups during the third term of both the 2018 and 2019 school years, where one group of students viewed videos with subtitles and the other group viewed the identical videos without subtitles. After viewing the videos, students immediately took a multiple-choice test. The test scores were used to analyze the variance between the two different groups. Today’s students are growing up in a digital world with constant connectivity, instant access to information, and new technological developments at every turn. The feasibility, effectiveness, and possibilities of students leveraging technological tools around them for learning are the subject of continual debate (Becker, 2017; Bowen, 2012; Tamim, Bernard, Borokhovski, Abrami, & Schmid, 2011). In this study, 706 middle school students from 18 classes worked in groups of 2-3 to complete an open-ended engineering design challenge. This article offers a critique of the way middle schoolers are often positioned as generalizable objects that can be acted upon to produce measurable increases in motivation and learning. The critique invites a reconsideration and cultural analysis of some of the dominant discourses and perceptions of technology, young adolescence, and the study of motivation. The use of New Ethnographic Writing—a method that performs a cultural critique via extended scenes—connects to the roles and status of motivation, technology, and educational research methods deployed within public schools. Based on the theory of media ecology, this study explores the cultural commons between traditional and non-traditional education in secondary schools. Postman's study of media ecology presents the notion that media technology plays an integral part in society and cannot be overlooked; more so, technologies should be used as an ecological learning tool to balance education systems (Postman 1992). This study explores how iPads can be used to enhance student learning in the math classroom. The author reviews current literature to determine how iPads are being used to facilitate communication, formative assessment, and promising practices in math education such as discovery learning and use of spreadsheets, graphing calculators, and manipulatives. To investigate interactive whiteboards and their impact on teachers, teaching, and students, a research review along with a qualitative case study on interactive whiteboards was performed. The purpose of this study is to learn more about the use of interactive whiteboards and specifically examine how one high school has implemented the technology. The research concludes that interactive whiteboards have had an overall positive impact on teachers, teaching, and students. Influences were noted in the areas of classroom practice, teacher collaboration, teacher preparation, and communication with students outside of the classroom. The purpose of this study was to examine student attitudes toward technology in the economics classroom in a magnet high school in Augusta, Georgia over a period of a semester. A survey was used to measure attitudes towards computer use, any changes at the end of the semester, and any differences by gender. Structured observations were notated in a teacher log once a week to note any differences in aggressiveness towards computer use by gender. The results indicate that although males scored higher on attitude surveys, there were no significant differences between gender.
