Service learning involves students blending their talents and education with identified needs in their community. The youth studied are transitioning into high school and have battled with issues of inconsistent schooling, chemical abuse, legal problems, and mental health challenges. To avoid the pain of failure, they have developed strategies that push people away. Participating in service learning allows students to develop positive relationships with adults and be proud of their own success. The purpose of this research study was to determine whether using the teaching method of students sharing a positive moment at the start of the class period would impact classroom culture including teacher-student relationships and peer support. The qualitative research was conducted in an eighth grade writing class in a charter school northwest of the Twin Cities. Data was collected through a teacher observational journal, student journals, and student surveys to determine the participants' reactions to sharing positive moments at the start of the class period. This white paper presents the progression and the processes of the New York Collaborative Curriculum Revision Project (CCRP), a collaborative of high school teachers, college faculty, and librarians, formed to build upon the new Common Core State Standards designed to help students develop and become more adept at reading critically, conducting rigorous research, and being better prepared for postsecondary success. This study is an examination of the manner in which educators employ scientific content humor and how that humor is perceived by their students. Content humor is a useful strategy in drawing the attention of students and improving their receptivity toward scientific information. While we often associate reading aloud with children and particularly younger children, the practice of reading aloud has historically been a way for a community to share texts for information and enjoyment. Findings from a year-long study of a school librarian collaborating with a team of second grade teachers demonstrates the value of reading aloud in building background knowledge and vocabulary, modeling, understanding curriculum, creating common texts, and reading for enjoyment. Reading aloud brought other voices to the table in a clear example of intertextuality. Implications are shared for school librarians interested in similar practices as well as future research …

This study intends to contribute to the literature by seeking evidence of a relationship between teacher characteristics and their high school students’ academic success in college. In this study, average college success is defined by six outcomes. The outcomes consist of the average first-year college GPA, average hours completed, percentage of students returning for a second year, percent of students receiving a GPA above a 3.0, percent of students completing 30 plus hours in their first year, and the average college math GPA.
