Assessment Of Seventh Grade Students' Attitudes Towards Writing, Frances Downey Gregory

Eleven students in seventh grade were pretested regarding their attitudes towards writing, using the Knudson Writing Attitude Survey for Children. A writing workshop based on the Nancie Atwell model was implemented for one month with the group. The students took the Knudson Survey again as a post test after the workshop. Results varied, with some of the students' attitudes remaining the same, some improving, and some declining. Suggestions for further research include studying the impact of specific teaching methodologies on writing self-efficacy beliefs, designing surveys to assess only self-efficacy beliefs, and studying the reasons for the drop in self-efficacy beliefs …

This study illustrates and compares the academic achievement of male high school athletes (single-sport participants) in and out of their respective sport's seasons, to determine if extracurricular athletic participation hinders or enhances academic performance based on their students' GPAs. This study was conducted at a High School in North Central Washington. Fifty randomly selected high school male student athletes, ranging from sophomores to seniors were measured on academic performance during the 1999-2000 school year. The need for a high school leadership curriculum for a small rural school district was studied. The review of literature showed that students should be provided the opportunity to learn leadership skills that focus on the individual, family, school and community. By working with peers and adults, leadership students will have the opportunity to work in real-life situations which address service-learning, character education, and school-to-work in aligmnent with the national and state standards.

The focus for this project is to establish a curriculum outline as well as develop appropriate supplementary projects for a seventh-grade Language Arts/Social Studies Honors program. The rationale behind such a program is discussed, as well as outlining the program structure. This includes student selection, entry, and expulsion from the program. There are seven units outlined, each of which has unit goals, activity descriptions, and project information and materials.

The purpose of this study was to heighten the awareness and draw attention to the level of out-of-field teachiug by high school science teachers in the Wenatchee Valley. This study was compared to the national average of out-of-field teachiug of science. High school science teachers from four school districts in the Wenatchee Valley were surveyed to determine the level of out-of-field teachiug. The results showed an increase in out-offield teachiug in the Wenatchee Valley compared to the national average. A cun-iculum framework for a one-year eleventh grade United States History course was designed. The Framework included the development of nine themes at the unit level and one theme at the lesson level. Goals and objectives were developed at the course, unit, and lesson level. The potential for thematic instruction to improve history teaching was discussed, as well as the challenges of designing thematic curriculum.

Coming from the classroom into the Leadership program, I felt that administration was a way in which a good teacher could more effectively make an impact upon an entire system rather than an isolated classroom. It is the opportunity to lead a building in creating an atmosphere and climate where every student benefits, not just the few in the teacher1 s room. Moving into the secondary principals hip this year, I still firmly believe that to be the case. An effective principal can help to create the type of atmosphere where great things can happen in education.

The purpose of the study was to: (1) assess the level of burnout and stress of public school counselors, (2) detem1ine if public school counselors differed in the reported level of burnout based on selected personal variables, and selected school variables. A convenient, volunteer sample was used from 42 public school counselors in a suburban area of St. Louis, Missouri. The instruments used for the study were the Maslach Burnout Inventory (Form Educational) and a demographic questionnaire.

Over the years, the public education system has been transformed by outside political and societal forces to provide an equal opportunity for all students. Investigations of the public education system were not consistent and yielded divergent results on how to improve adolescent academic achievement. These divergent results were caused by different operationalizations of variables, data analytical procedures that possibly provided biased parameter estimates, and a failure to use a comprehensive theory.
