Status, Self, And Peers: An Ethnography Of Junior High School, Susan Martha Nesheim Allbee
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
This report begins with a brief discussion of the overall purpose of social science: to be of service to humankind. To examine and report one's findings is no longer the whole of the responsibility of social scientific research. One must also examine the purpose and objectives of that research. In view of those statements, the objective of this project--the gathering and analysis of information on the culture of junior high school students-- is to gain a better understanding of early adolescence and thereby offer opportunities for insights not only into their culture but to add to the body of knowledge …

The Effects Of Locus Of Control And Agent Delivering Reinforcement On Performance Rates Of Junior High Emotionally Disabled Students, Mary Jean Blaisdell
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
A single subject treatment comparison study was made with 2 junior high boys in a classroom for the emotionally disabled to determine the effects of their perceived locus of control on their response to different agents of reinforcement. Out of 7 students from a middle class background, the most internally and externally oriented students were chosen. Student orientation was determined by the results of the Modified Intellectual Achievement Responsibility Questionnaire, an instrument designed to assess the degree to which students perceive themselves to be responsible for the events in their lives. The study consisted of data collection under teacher reinforcement, …

Differences In Class Rank Between Boys And Girls In Graduating Classes Of Iowa Public Secondary Schools, Dave John Cook
Differences In Class Rank Between Boys And Girls In Graduating Classes Of Iowa Public Secondary Schools, Dave John Cook
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
For many years, educators have noted that girls seem to attain higher class rank than boys while attending secondary schools. It appears that this idea has been accepted a priori and that little research effort has been put forth to determine the magnitude of the differences which exist. It is a matter of conjecture at the present time as to how great the differences must be before they will be considered to be serious problems.
It was the purpose of this study (1) to determine whether significant differences existed between the class standing of boys and the class standing of …

An Annotated Bibliography Of Selected Historical Fiction For Use In High School World History, Franklin D. Carlson
An Annotated Bibliography Of Selected Historical Fiction For Use In High School World History, Franklin D. Carlson
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
High school teachers of World History have an opportunity to enrich their students' learning by suggesting or requiring the reading of historical fiction appropriate to their courses. Much of the world's literature may be classified as historical fiction, having value for the student of history as well as for the student of literature. Historical fiction may be used as an extension of the regular textbook, to enlarge the individual student's understandings of historical characters, events, and time periods which may receive scant treatment in the regular textbook. For many students, a fictional account of the past may be more palatable, …

An Evaluative Study Of Seventh Grade Homeroom Activities At Nathan Weeks Junior High School, Des Moines, Iowa, Harold Eugene Dilts
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Several years ago the Des Moines Public School System provided time in their secondary school schedule for a homeroom period. Since that time, conflicting opinions as to the value of this homeroom period have arisen. The opinions expressed have been varied and have been based on limited observation. No experimental evidence has been presented to indicate whether or not the homerooms were meeting the needs for which they …

A Proposed Design For Utilizing School-Made Photographic Slides In The Secondary School, Everett G. Brower
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
This study is concerned with photography as a means . of constructing supplemental instruction materials. The study was designed to appeal to the educator who is concerned with vitalizing and extending the educational program of the school. Photography has been generally accepted as a worth-while leisure time activity for society, and recently educators have begun to realize its value as a teaching medium. The terms motion picture and audio-visual education have become almost synonymous. As a result, many of the simpler teaching aids have been neglected and have been relegated to undeserved minor importance. However, the use of the simpler …
