It was the purpose of this study (1) to investigate and present an analysis of the conditions and methods of mathematics teaching in New Mexico high schools as revealed through a questionnaire study; (2) to obtain an objective measure of the functional competence of New Mexico students in mathematics by administering the Davis Test of Functional Competence in Mathematics to a representative number of high school seniors in the state and comparing their levels of achievement with national norms; (3) to evaluate the present conditions and analyze the effectiveness of the present methods in teaching the …

The purpose of this study is to analyze the two series of reports for the 1948-49 from forty-one member high schools of the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools in the state of New Mexico and to present such conclusions and recommendations for the programs of those schools as warranted by the data presented. The reports upon which this study is based include (1) Special Report on Criterion I (Form A-3) to the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, and (2) Annual General Report on Criteria (Form A-2, 1948-49).

Surveys of the schools in the Hopkins County District in recent years have convincingly revealed that these services are not being rendered. The rapid growth of high schools within the past thirty years, and the changes in the methods of teaching, have made the library and important phase of any well-equipped high school. The capacity for service varies greatly in the different states. Some states have provided adequate equipment and staffs; others have given the bare necessities.
The purpose of this present study is: (1) to determine the facilities of high school libraries in New Mexico; (2) to ascertain the training and qualifications of the personnel; and (3) to compare the results with standards and recommendations made by library and educational associations.
