Since the Emergence of Outward Bound and NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School), programs have been popping up all over the country spanning from high school outing clubs and high ropes courses to university orientation trips and college degrees (Raiola & O'Keefe, 1999). When an individual is looking to become a qualified instructor in the field of outdoor education, however, there are few programs that offer the combination of high level outdoor training, therapeutic training options, and academic rigor similar to the offerings at the University of New Hampshire.

Rapid Urban Expansion Threatens Biodiversity, Yale University

A brief window of opportunity exists to shape the development of cities globally before a boom in infrastructure construction transforms urban land cover, according to a study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Researchers at Yale, Texas A&M and Boston University predict that by 2030 urban areas will expand by more than 463,000 square miles, or 1.2 million square kilometers. That is equal to 20,000 American football fields becoming urban every day for the first three decades of this century.

The project was coordinated by the Investigative News Network, and reported and written by the Connecticut Health Investigative Team, City Limits, Iowa Center for Public Affairs Journalism, the New England Center for Investigative Reporting, the Wisconsin Center for Investigative Journalism and INN.

According to the American Psychological Association (n.d.), resilience is “the process of adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats, or even significant sources of stress- such as family and relationship problems, serious health problems, or workplace and financial stressors.” Psychological resilience (distinct from other types of resilience, e.g., physical resilience) may be understood as one’s capacity for maintenance, recovery, or improvement in mental health following life challenges (Neill & Dias, 2001). Approximately five years have lapsed since Richard Louv launched an unanticipated national children and nature movement with publication of his book. Last Child in the Woods: Saving our Children from Nat tire Deficit Disorder. Just as Gifford Pinchot informed and inflamed (with Theodore Roosevelt's help) public consciousness by coining the term "Conservation" in the early 1900's; Louv's "Nature Deficit Disorder" (NDD) resonated with the suspicions of outdoor professionals in 2005. Seemingly almost everywhere, children were experiencing the outdoors less and less and they, and society, were paying a heavy price because of it!

The National Outdoor Book Awards (NOBA) is the outdoor world's largest and most prestigious book award program. It is a non-profit, educational program, sponsored by the National Outdoor Book Awards Foundation, Association of Outdoor Recreation and Education, and Idaho State University.

The purpose of the awards is to recognize and encourage outstanding writing and publishing. Each fall in early November, the NOBA Foundation announces the winners of the ten categories making up the program, including History, Literature, Children, Nature, Natural History. Instructional. I am not sure how this publication escaped my attention for so long. Now in its fourth edition, First Along the River... is an indispensable book that all environmental and outdoor education professionals and students should have available at their fingertips. Friend and former colleague Bob Buerger says it well on the book's back cover: "First Along the River provides a concise, introduction to U.S. environmental history. An excellent supplement for any student of the subject."
