Going Beyong The Third Grade Science Kit: An Integrated Thematic Approach, Michele D. Wiederspohn

A project has been developed to aid in the design of a third grade science program and/or to be used as a supplement to any existing third grade science curriculum. The project has been organized into fourteen lesson plans. Each lesson plan includes an overview of the lesson, student learning objectives matched to the Washington State Essential Academic Learning Requirements, activities, a list of required materials, an outline of instruction, and the name of a trade book to compliment the lesson. Current literature and research regarding the topic of integrated curriculum were explored.

Healing Power Of Nature In Recovery, Cherie Carter

During In-patient Rehabilitation, a 30-60 day program, clients are provided with many outdoor experiences through activities in the Therapeutic Recreation (TR) program. Trips to local parks and beaches, ropes courses, canoe and camping trips, and organized activity days planned in local parks all contribute opportunities for clients to develop a connection with nature. Client comments about outdoor experiences during and following treatment at Main Quest include positive remarks about stimulating senses that have been deadened through the use of drugs, rediscovering feelings of wonder, finding a balance that has been missing for a number of years or was never developed, …

Recent studies conducted by the Environmental Careers Organization and SCA reveal that the supply and demand for women and people of color in the environmental field is critically unbalanced, and that America's environmental organizations are "ill-prepared" to recruit and retain talented people of color.

This lack of representation by women and minorities - who comprise a growing proportion of our nation's available labor force - inhibits not only the diversity and growth of the conservation workforce, but also its credibility and effectiveness. A Guide For Extending Nature Lessons At The Yakima Arboretum, Kathleen D. Brown

The importance of providing a hands on natural environment curriculum was examined. Sources from 1938-1996 were found supporting the importance of such a curriculum. A search was conducted on the availability of a natural habitat curriculum that used a local resource. The search discovered the Yakima Arboretum had seven areas of interest along with a packet of brief lesson suggestions. These lessons were extended to include classroom activities that would provide students with background knowledge prior to a field trip to the Arboretum.
