For many of us using group-building activities, the solution to maintaining the integrity of participants lies in supporting their decisions as individuals. "Challenge by Choice" is commonly used in programs that combine individual risk-taking with group-building activities such as rock climbing. The challenge by choice philosophy states that if a participant feels threatened or unsafe with a situation, they reserve the right to step out. The Endangered Species Act (ESA) has re~ r d .. . , at deal of press in recent months, much of it n~gativ'--· following legislation proposed by Rep'.,~()•1ti~h, Alaksa) in September, 1995. His legislation essentially renders the ESA useless, by overruling definition of "taking," requiring federal agencies to pay off aggrevied landowners, and making protection on private lands voluntary. The earlier momentum of the bill has slowed considerably, as Republican leaders, including House Speaker Newt Gingrich, realize that the American public does not want to see hundreds of endangered species disappear forever.

Wilderness Survival Basic Skills: A Model Seventh Grade Science Curriculum With Integrated Math Concepts, Layne B. Hutchins

The purpose of this project was to design and implement a model 7th grade science program with integrated mathematics concepts using an outdoor survival theme. The developed program focused on mathematics and science topics related to exploration and survival in the wilderness and enjoyment of the outdoors in order to connect mathematics and science concepts with real life experiences. Current research and literature on integration and multiple intelligences, integration of mathematics and science as well existing outdoor programs was reviewed. Finally, section overviews, student learning objectives, learning activities and teaching strategies were adapted and developed.

Guidelines For Development Of Outdoor Education Programs, Leland D. Chapman

This paper presents guidelines for development of an outdoor education program for schools in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. This developmental study is an analysis of the information collected from nine districts in Oregon, Washington, and the Regional Office, U.S. Forest Service, Portland, Oregon. It is limited to evaluations of existing programs, interviews with resource personnel and library research. Recommendations of this study are those indicated by the districts consulted and the Washington and Oregon Departments of Public Instruction.

It was the purpose of this study to (1) explore the philosophy and historical background of Outdoor Education in the United States, (2) point out its importance to our present society, (3) show its relationship to learning and curriculum, and (4) cite its values.
