Another Model Of Outdoor And Environmental Education, Clifford E. Knapp
Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education
After reading Charles Yaple's article, ''Envisioning Environmental and Outdoor Education" in the May, 1997 issue of Taproot , I decided to offer my definitions and diagrammatic concept model in order to continue the "conversation:
Outdoor education is a set of planned and unplanned experiences related to the formal school or college curriculum which take place outsi4e the school building. The selection of these experiences is based on the educational objectives judged • to be best met through unmediated (direct and in context) interaction with local community and surrounding 6 Taproot Summer 1998 areas. The study topics include a variety of …

The Doctor Is Out, Erin Quinn
The Doctor Is Out, Erin Quinn
Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education
So she had decided to do her dissertation on the impact of environmental experiences on children's art, sense of self, cognitive and emotional abilities. She posed herself the question: Is experience in nature "good" for children? Or was it simply "great fun" to be outdoors? It was the 'thank-you' drawings that children had sent her that first sparked her interest in this subject-artworks which, in her words, "provide a fascinating lens through which to view children's mental and emotional development."

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education
In explaining to a potential client what issues could be accomplished in a weekend program you find yourself stumbling over why there are limitations to what could be addressed in such a short time frame.
When training new facilitators you are asked how to select- out of such a wide range of possibilities - the activity or initiative that is most suited to the needs of a specific group and builds appropriately on their previous experiences.
Intuitively adventure programmers know the answer to these two scenarios. The difficulty arrises when we are asked to explain our reasoning to people not …

Making Interdisciplinary Connections To Your School Gardening Program, Marcia Eames-Sheavly
Making Interdisciplinary Connections To Your School Gardening Program, Marcia Eames-Sheavly
Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education
Gardening is an exciting, approachable way to teach kids about plants. A good gardening program doesn't need to be one more thing thrown on your plate; by integrating it into the curriculum, gardening can be easy and interdisciplinary. Interdisciplinary projects enhance young peoples' ability to make connections among isolated facts, and to find meaning among those arbitrary facts. A U.S. News and World Report article (January 1993) pointed out that some interdisciplinary pilot projects in New York and Los Angeles schools even improved school attendance, and decreased drop-out rates.

My husband and I have a family business where we work together to put in public gardens that have touched the lives of hundreds of thousands people. Today my husband asked, "Why did we do that?" And I said, "Because I don't care about clothes, and I don't care about fancy cars. But, I love to buy plants and work with kids, and I like to buy a few books once in a while." So, all it really takes is hard work and creative imagination, and wonders can be accomplished.

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education
Gardening in February may seem like a stretch for some of our readers. But even those in the northern climes have but two or three months before the season will be upon us. Actually, gardening is a teaching tool that educators can use year-round to add zest and reality to classroom instruction.
This special issue of Taproot features three articles related to children and gardening. All three pieces stem (no pun intended) from a national Children's Gardens symposium co-sponsored by State University of New York at Cortland and Cornell University. Held on the Cortland campus, several hundred participants enjoyed seminars …
