Her scholarly approach outlines the progress of the movement from 1930 to the present. Carlson's careful documentation furnishes good suggestions for those who would read more deeply.

Like Paul Rezendes' The Wild Within: Adventures in Nature and Animal Teachings (see Taproot, summer 1999), Dan Dustin has penned a collection of essays about adventure-based outdoor recreation experiences set mostly in the context of mountains, forests, and deserts. Both authors share how nature has served to expand their awareness and understanding of life and stress the value of frequent self-reflection. Unlike Rezendes, Dustin also includes six essays suggesting that what makes life interesting "flows out of everyday pastimes" such as visiting with friends, playing games, listening to music, and enjoying good food.

Environmental education is in an awkward position. Nationwide polls tell us that 96% of parents support teaching environmental education in the schools.1 When teachers are asked if environmental education is important, an overwhelming majority (97.9%) agrees. Alan Gussow suggests that a place is a piece of the environment claimed by our feelings. In outdoor and environmental education we often talk about the importance of building a sense of place, because we believe that building a sense of connection with places ultimately leads to the valuing of and consequent caring for these places. I'd suggest also that we need to extend the concept of building this sense of connectedness to include people, and communities of people, and particularly communities of people in their places.
