Nash argues that compared to the millennia of anti-wilderness sentiment. the pace of intellectual change in the previous two centuries is so rapid that it must be considered revolutionary (1982 P. XI). Viewed in the context of human hi story and human attitudes, this is true. However, the actual development of a pro-wilderness viewpoint in America has followed an evolutionary course from the Romantic Movement through Emerson, Thoreau, Muir, and Leopold. The latest, logical manifestation of this evolutionary progress is the philosophy known as deep ecology.

The year 2000, then, marks the 70th anniversary of outdoor education, and represents an appropriate time to revisit some of its early beginnings in the United States. Outdoor education today has mixed and melded with other outdoor and experientially related approaches to learning. It is believed that knowledge of the historical roots of outdoor education, and identification of the paths it has taken to arrive where it is today, can help educators in broadening their understanding of relationships between various approaches to pedagogy.

Hence, our lead story "Early Beginnings in Outdoor Education" by Julie Carlson provides a good summary of outdoor education history. Her scholarly approach outlines the progress of the movement from 1930 to the present. Carlson's careful documentation furnishes good suggestions for those who would read more deeply.

Like Paul Rezendes' The Wild Within: Adventures in Nature and Animal Teachings (see Taproot, summer 1999), Dan Dustin has penned a collection of essays about adventure-based outdoor recreation experiences set mostly in the context of mountains, forests, and deserts. Both authors share how nature has served to expand their awareness and understanding of life and stress the value of frequent self-reflection. Unlike Rezendes, Dustin also includes six essays suggesting that what makes life interesting "flows out of everyday pastimes" such as visiting with friends, playing games, listening to music, and enjoying good food.

Nationwide polls tell us that 96% of parents support teaching environmental education in the schools.1 When teachers are asked if environmental education is important, an overwhelming majority (97.9%) agrees. Yet few teachers consistently include environmental education in their curriculum. 2 In the 30 years since environmental education took wing, many teachers have found themselves caught between believing in the importance of environmental education and feeling pressed to find the time to "fit" it in.
