The National Outdoor Book Awards (NOBA) is the outdoor world's largest and most prestigious book award program. It is a non-profit, educational program, sponsored by the National Outdoor Book Awards Foundation, Association of Outdoor Recreation and Education, and Idaho State University.

The purpose of the awards is to recognize and encourage outstanding writing and publishing. Each fall in early November, the NOBA Foundation announces the winners of the ten categories making up the program, including History, Literature, Children, Nature, Natural History. Instructional. Adventure Guidebook, Nature Guidebook, Design, and Outdoor Classic.

I am not sure how this publication escaped my attention for so long. Now in its fourth edition, First Along the River... is an indispensable book that all environmental and outdoor education professionals and students should have available at their fingertips. Friend and former colleague Bob Buerger says it well on the book's back cover: "First Along the River provides a concise, introduction to U.S. environmental history. An excellent supplement for any student of the subject."

Having the opportunity, or taking it, to research and write about outdoor education. pioneers is similar to harvesting a garden without having had to plant, nurture and tend it. The pioneers (Anna Botsford Comstock, William Gould Vinal, and Julian W Smith) studied in this issue of Taproot have already done the hard work of tilling, planting seeds, nurturing and tending their chosen work. Although they departed for other worlds long ago, we continue to reap the benefits of their passion for outdoor education.
