Dnp Final Report: The Flipped Classroom: An Evidence-Based, Course Redesign To Increase Retention Rates In A Vocational Nursing Program, Jennifer P. Hauger
DNP Final Reports
Over the past three decades, Vocational Nursing has been taught using a conventional didactic method that is content heavy and lecture focused. Despite having a group of highly qualified professors and an excellent student pass rates on the National board examinations, student retention in a Vocational Nursing Program in central Texas remains below the National benchmark. With a unique student demographic that is identified as non-traditional (over 21, full-time working adults, English Second Language and single parents), we embarked upon the redesign of a Medical-Surgical Nursing course using the flipped pedagogical framework to increase retention rates. Therefore, in 2019 we …
Finding Pathways: Best Practices For Ongoing Learning In Toastmasters, Veronica Brown
Finding Pathways: Best Practices For Ongoing Learning In Toastmasters, Veronica Brown
Instructional Design Capstones Collection
Toastmasters International, an educational organization consisting of an international network of public speaking clubs, has developed a sophisticated elearning educational program called Pathways as an update to a simpler program, published in booklets, that was nearly a century old. Reactions from club members have been mixed and the transition has required a great deal of training and support efforts at all levels of the organization. This research seeks to identify best practices Toastmasters clubs and members can use to successful transition to Pathways. The hypothesis of the research is that Toastmasters, as a community of practice (CoP), is a connectivist …

Multimodal Learning In A Post-Truth World, Graysen Russell, Mike Dundrea, Rachel Carroll
2020 Symposium Posters
The English classroom has become challenging in this age. Not only are teachers expected to instruct students in the specifics of standard university English concepts and requirements but must also now combat post-truth. It is imperative that students are taught critical thinking to decipher what news is ethical and what is fake, while combatting implicit biases when choosing what to write in essays and projects to produce honest and trustworthy products. Students are often confronted with misinformation and without critical knowledge of how to analyze what they see and hear. They are vulnerable to consume and accept any information encountered. …

An Investigation Of The Impacts Of Traditional, Virtual, And Hybrid Biological Laboratories On College Students’ Achievement And Motivation To Learn Biology, Shavonda Jackson
An Investigation Of The Impacts Of Traditional, Virtual, And Hybrid Biological Laboratories On College Students’ Achievement And Motivation To Learn Biology, Shavonda Jackson
Dissertations
Virtual courses function in a different manner than traditional courses, therefore they require teaching methods and assessment techniques geared specifically to maximize this learning experience. Internet-based learning and distance-education are no longer new concepts in the science field. Because of this, many collegiate biology programs have created courses that can be taken virtual or hybrid. A number of experimental studies have had great influence in terms of the effects and impacts of educational technology in relation to virtual laboratories.
However, not many studies emphasize the impact of hybrid laboratories on student achievement or assess students’ motivation to learn in a …

Information Literacy On-Demand: How To Create An Online Library Readiness Mini-Course, Rachel Hooper
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
What do many academic librarians want? Required information literacy classes! When do they want them? Now! This poster will show how a large university developed an on-demand library readiness mini-course online that has recently become a requirement for all undergraduate orientation classes, both in-person and online. Furthermore, the online mini-course has been adopted by numerous faculty in research-based courses across varied subject areas throughout the University. Through a collaboration between librarians and faculty, the mini-course teaches students research skills, how to find books and journal articles, how to use InterLibrary Loan, how to get library and research assistance, and more. …

Improving Information Literacy Through Embedding, Kelly M. Wilson, Rachel Hooper, Jay Brandes
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
How do you reach and assist students who are halfway around the world? How can we ensure they are receiving library training that increases their information literacy skills? Join us for this presentation and conversation about how one university used embedding to reach the “unreachable,” and then expanded to reach online domestic students, and eventually those on the home campus. What began as a project between two librarians on five online courses has now grown to include additional librarians and tripled the number of classes over a few months. We will discuss the reasoning behind embedding in the Canvas Learning …

Fifteen participants were divided into three groups, each corresponding to one learning platform. They engaged in two 45-min learning sessions and completed pre, post, and follow-up surveys to measure the impact of the learning platform on the dependent variables of satisfaction, confidence, and knowledge application. No significant differences were found between learning platforms for the three variables, but improvements from pre to follow-up survey were found to be significant for …

Heritage Language Maintenance: Research Review And Reflection Of One Family Case, Josiah Chan
Heritage Language Maintenance: Research Review And Reflection Of One Family Case, Josiah Chan
ECTESOL Review
Heritage Language maintenance provides learner tangible benefits in academic achievement, language acquisition, and career opportunity. Intangibly, it enhances the learner’s self-esteem and cultural identity. The learning effort was complicated by the parents’ native Cantonese Chinese dialect. The parents and children strived to balance the learning dynamics between Mandarin and Cantonese. Syntactic Accidents In The Spontaneous Speech Of English And Armenian Speakers, Karen Velyan
Syntactic Accidents In The Spontaneous Speech Of English And Armenian Speakers, Karen Velyan
ECTESOL Review
Fragmented syntax or a break of the flow of surface syntax is well known to be an indispensable part of spontaneous spoken language. Interruptions in the flow of speech may be triggered by pragmatic reasons, changes in syntactic planning and performance errors, which results in syntactic fragments. Syntactic accidents may take different forms in the actual flow of speech. This study presents a cross-linguistic comparative analysis of the cases of syntax in the speech of low socioeconomic status speakers of English and Armenian. Based on data from informal interviews with native speakers, the analysis presents a variety of syntactic accidents, …
The Reflective Approach To Teaching Culture Within The Efl Classroom, Lucia Schiopu
The Reflective Approach To Teaching Culture Within The Efl Classroom, Lucia Schiopu
ECTESOL Review
This article examines the reflective approach in the teaching of culture in the EFL classroom, which is not just a mere gathering of information, but is the creation and construction of discourses that break or maintain cultural stereotypes. This is also an approach where meaning is constructed that is shaped by the quality and depth of cultural sensitivity and awareness. Teaching and learning a culture reflectively does not necessarily mean that the learner is taught to behave in accordance with specific social norms but to introduce an acceptable and appropriate conduct for the use of language in terms of intelligibility, …
