Uncertain Futures, Unfinished Journeys: The Complex Realities Of Belonging Among International College Women Of Color In The U.S., Matheeha Majeeth
West Chester University Doctoral Projects
This study explored the complex and personal lived experiences of International College Women of Color (ICWOC) as they navigated the complexities of developing of a sense of belonging within their U.S. higher education institution (HEI). Guided by Kimberlé Crenshaw’s theory of Intersectionality (1991,1989) and Strayhorn’s College Student Sense of Belonging theory (2012), this research study used an interpretive phenomenological approach to explore how racism, ethnocentrism and misogyny shaped the ICWOC participants’ academic and social journeys in their U.S. HEIs. Through individual, semi-structured interviews with the participants, this study revealed that belonging was not simply about institutional access or inclusion. It …

From Marginality to Mattering: A Narrative Inquiry into International Student Involvement in Higher Education
International students contribute to the campus community through diversity, cultural aspects and to the local economy within the university community. However, they often face unique challenges to their involvement which leads to feelings of marginality and impacting their sense of belonging. Using Schlossberg’s theory of Marginality and Mattering, this narrative inquiry explored the lived experiences of international students in seeking involvement opportunities at mid to large public university in the Midwest of the United States. This study highlighted international students’ reflections on their initial attempts to …
International Students’ Perceptions And Experiences Of Institutional Diversity Initiatives And Self-Authorship Attainment: A Mixed Methods Study, Sandra Ayivor
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Higher education institutions in the United States have responded to years of discrimination through several diversity initiatives. Although research has indicated the merits of such initiatives on student development, the outcomes are not uniform across all student populations. Moreover, student development discourses have often excluded the experiences of international students. Employing a convergent mixed methods approach, this study investigated the perceptions and experiences of international students at a flagship land-grant higher education institution in the Appalachian region of the United States regarding institutional diversity initiatives and their self-authorship based on some demographic characteristics (i.e., gender, age, marital status, religion, continent, …

The British Council, in partnership with ACER, designed and developed a survey consisting of an online questionnaire and interviews, to gather information from international alumni systematically and periodically, with the purpose of building a valuable longitudinal dataset. This research report relates only to the first year of the survey. The long-term aim is to conduct this survey annually, for an initial period of five years. The longitudinal survey has the following three overriding objectives: • To gather evidence of the value of international education in the UK. Social Media Sanctuaries: A Discourse Analysis Of Indian International Students' Agency And Liminality During The Russian-Ukrainian Conflict, Bhavika Sicka, Nadiya Ungo, Dennis Gregory
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Faculty Publications
This study used a social media discourse analysis approach to illuminate the narratives of Indian international students in Ukraine who experienced displacement and upheaval because of the Russo-Ukrainian war. We used agency and liminality as analytic lenses to highlight how this uniquely situated population used Facebook to navigate conflict, voice their demands, support each other, challenge hegemonic narratives, re/construct their diasporic identities, and re-orient their futures. Findings indicate that Indian international students in Ukraine displayed insurmountable courage and resilience during the war, enacting agency from the margins to amplify their voices and actuate desired futures. Furthermore, South Asian students in …
Reclaiming & Reasserting Third World Womanhoods In U.S. Higher Education, Bhavika Sicka
Reclaiming & Reasserting Third World Womanhoods In U.S. Higher Education, Bhavika Sicka
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Faculty Publications
This study combines narrative inquiry with Third World feminism to bring a nuanced and scopic perspective of Third World women student experiences in US higher education. Specifically, it utilises Talpade Mohanty's concept of Third World womanhood to visibilise the experiences of five Third World international female students. Understanding womanhood as transnationally fluid and contextual, I investigate how women international students from the Third World perceive themselves to be misrepresented or homogenised in Western higher education. I also examine how gender and foreignness act as dynamic, interrelated categories in doubly‐othering this population. The purpose is to identify how Third World women …

Monitoring The Competitiveness Of The Australia Awards, Debbie Wong, Yung Nietschke
Global education monitoring
The Australia Awards are prestigious international scholarships and short courses funded by the Australian Government to contribute to the achievement of development outcomes and the promotion of prosperity, resilience and stability in partner countries. The closure of Australia’s borders during COVID-19 caused a decline in international student numbers and prompted concerns about Australia’s competitiveness in the global scholarship market. This paper provides a framework and proposed methodology for systematic monitoring of Australia Awards competitiveness to provide DFAT’s Global Education and Scholarships section with data to inform ongoing policy and programming decisions. This paper uses theories of capital as a conceptual …

Silence As An Educational Tool To Deconstruct Normative Societal Structures And Create Epistemic Trust, Milad Mohebali, Elmira Jangjou
Feminist Pedagogy
This article advances a teaching strategy to help students reflect on how they engage in class discussion by considering silence and silencing of voices in classroom discussions among peers as epistemic violence where a student’s capacity as a knower is questioned. We provide examples of silence(ing) we experienced as graduate international students from the Global South studying educational policy and leadership studies in the United States, to then share how we have used silence as a pedagogical tool to deconstruct the assumptions of the field and the society that keeps the silence as normative. We introduce third thinging as a …

Racism Without Race: The Racialization Of Middle Eastern And North African Students At U.S. Colleges, Hannah Mesouani
Racism Without Race: The Racialization Of Middle Eastern And North African Students At U.S. Colleges, Hannah Mesouani
Dissertations
Although a growing body of literature covers the experiences of international students at U.S. colleges, the stories of those who do not fit into the U.S. racial schema remain untold. This study examined how Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) students understood their racial identities given the United States’ tense history with Islam and the MENA world. Using foundational texts on critical race theory, current scholarship on Arab Americans and foreign-born students, and facets of the Ethnic Identity Scale (EIS), this study examined the experiences of MENA students who study amid a national backdrop of xenophobia and racialized Islamophobia. This …
