I came to UD from Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, one of the 54 countries in Africa. The Democratic Republic of Congo includes more than 250 tribes. Two principal values can define the Congolese culture, as well as the cultures of many other countries in Africa: hospitality and attachment to the family. In Congolese cultures, strangers are welcome and given particular care. In fact, being together is of a great value in this cultural environment. There is little room for individualism. We exist first as members of a family or a clan.

UD’s SAIL Program (Semester Abroad and Intercultural Leadership) is a specific example of how we are being more intentional about intercultural development and positive intercultural engagement within the UD community.

Globalization is a choice; inclusivity is also a choice. When you have privilege or power, you can choose what you like and what you don’t like. People tend to associate with what they value. That is fine; however, the problem exists in the question of “why do we value what we value?” I would argue that your values have been shaped by the media, false or incomplete historical narratives, and of course your upbringing. Therefore, your values have been skewed by factors like racism, white supremacy, simple stereotypes.

Imbolo Mbue is the author of Behold The Dreamers, a 2017 Oprah’s Book Club pick and winner of the PEN/Faulkner Award.

Mbue’s book is informed by her experience of being an immigrant and the experiences of the many immigrants that she knows. The journeys of our students and Ms. Mbue connect in Limbe: each summer a group of UD students travels to Cameroon for a cultural-immersion/study-abroad program.

Global Voices on the University of Dayton Campus Symposium emerged in an atmosphere of optimism. During the last decade, UD’s profile as an international campus increased in several ways. With roughly 10 percent of its students identifying as international, the University restructured its curriculum to include more programming and course offerings that are global in nature and scholarly scope. There was an uptick in study abroad and cultural immersion programs. Simultaneously, UD’s efforts to recruit more domestic minority students, especially African American, Hispanic, and Native American students, is on the right trajectory. It is moving upwards. The intent of this thesis is to study the diverse experiences of 13 University of Central Florida students who participated in the Bilingual Study Abroad Teaching Experience in Spain. The group included nine education students and four in other majors. The experiences of study abroad participants can help to better understand what future participants can look to gain from the program, and what the organizers of the program can potentially look to improve. The paper discusses the role of big data in monitoring education quality and implications at the global, regional and national levels in the light of international efforts to monitor progress in achieving UN Sustainable Development Goal in Education (SDG 4). Data on learning outcomes are central in establishing and monitoring education quality. The proportion of children achieving at least a minimum proficiency in reading and mathematics is a primary indicator of SDG 4. For this indicator to be meaningful across contexts, a shared understanding must be reached on its constituents and the data used to report progress. While large-scale assessments …
