Different But Still The Same? A Review Of Recent Australian University Internationalization Approaches, Samantha Marangell, Jiadi Cai, Mollie Dollinger
Journal of Comparative & International Higher Education
In the quest for higher education internationalization approaches, there remains much debate about how to redefine “internationalization” in a post-pandemic context through which the limitations of student mobility have been exposed. This article contributes to current debates about future directions and definitions of internationalization by offering insightful analysis of recent approaches and conceptualizations across the Australian university sector. To do so, we conducted a desktop review of universities’ public-facing international strategies and analyzed the documents for patterns in practices and priorities. Our findings generate a timely picture of internationalization approaches and indicate the broadening conceptualization of internationalization within the sector, …

A Critical Examination Of International Education Mobility Regimes: Comparative Insights From Vietnamese Students In Canada, France, And The United Kingdom, Anne-Cécile Delaissea, Tamsin Barberb, Suzanne Huota
Journal of Comparative & International Higher Education
Amidst the neoliberal commodification of international education, countries have taken various approaches to governing international students’ mobilities. This paper examines Vietnamese students’ navigation of different ‘regimes of mobility’ in Canada, France and the United Kingdom (UK). Drawing on Manderscheid’s (2020) “critique of mobility” we highlight how these regimes vary not only in openness, but also in the power dynamics they perpetuate. Based on two qualitative interpretive studies, including 25 interviews with Vietnamese students in Vancouver, Paris, and the UK (London, Northampton and Aberdeen), our thematic analysis addresses how mobility regimes affect students’ choice of destination, legal status, and post-graduation plans. …

Married And Co-Teaching While Abroad: A Case Study, Rachel Renbargera, Munube Yilmaz, Tracey Sulakc
Journal of Comparative & International Higher Education
The existing literature on co-teaching, higher education, and study abroad settings discusses best practices, but it largely overlooks how these frameworks may interact and influence the co-teaching experiences of married couples, which would ultimately impact student outcomes. This study utilizes a qualitative case study approach to examine how students in a higher education program experience and perceive a study abroad course taught by a married couple. The data were collected from six undergraduate students through focus group interviews, observations, and a survey. Information from the course syllabus and interviews with the professors was also utilized. Results illustrated that married co-teachers …

"It is hard to think in two languages when your feet are freezing." Words swim through her head, but she is unable to catch any of them (twelve-year-old Syrian migrant, Warga 2019).
In these ‘liquid’ times of hyper-diversity, students’ lives marked by their identity practices and social relations can tell us how future inclusive global citizenship will be crafted and negotiated. During 2023, students and professors from universities in Ecuador, Argentina, Dominican Republic, United Kingdom, Czech Republic and Ukraine participated in a series of virtual meetings to explore and present the multiple threads that connect the local expression and negotiation …
Understanding The Impact Of Virtual Online And Traditional Learning On Student Mental Health: A Sequential Mixed Methods Study Amid And Beyond Educational Disruptions, Helene D. Daya
Journal of Comparative & International Higher Education
The global pandemic accelerated the transition from conventional face-to-face to distant online education. This study aims to investigate the disparities in mental health challenges among students undergoing remote online learning during the educational disruption and their current psychological status upon transitioning back to in-person learning. Students at public universities experienced high levels of psychological distress, stress, anxiety, and depression. The study revealed an association between mental health concerns and demographic factors, including socioeconomic status and gadget use. While students' mental well-being improved after in-person learning, they faced challenges in managing stress and developing self-directed learning skills. The research recommends implementing …
From Milan To Murmansk – Lisbon To Lake Louise: Conceptualizing The Meaning Of Internationalization In Higher Education, May-Kristin Vespestad
From Milan To Murmansk – Lisbon To Lake Louise: Conceptualizing The Meaning Of Internationalization In Higher Education, May-Kristin Vespestad
Journal of Comparative & International Higher Education
Internationalization is an academic goal and quality measure in higher education, driven by governmental policies and target numbers of mobility, where quantitative measures are the norm. Discussions of what internationalization means and why it is regarded as important need further conceptualization in a higher education context. This is the first longitudinal autoethnography to discuss the meaning of internationalization. The present study makes noteworthy contributions to international higher education literature and practice. Based on the conceptual framework of value co-creation and consumer value theory, the study offers a conceptualization of internationalization. It establishes that internationalization cannot be driven by quantitative measures …

Leadership And Context For Comprehensive Internationalization: Senior International Officer Perspectives, Elenora Haag
Journal of Comparative & International Higher Education
Increasing attention has been paid in recent years to the nature and importance of the role of the senior international officer (SIO) in higher education institutions. With reference to Knight’s (1994) internationalization cycle and Tierney’s (1988) framework of organizational culture, this basic qualitative study examines the intersection of leadership and institutional context as mediators of the internationalization process, a perspective which is lacking in the existing literature. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 11 SIOs from institutions that have received a national award for internationalization, with strategic planning documents serving as a secondary data source. Findings suggest that the roles of …

This capstone proposes the Global Pathways: Suwon program, a semester-long study abroad initiative developed in partnership between Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) and Kyonggi University (KGU) in Suwon, South Korea. The program responds to current limitations in study abroad, particularly the prevalence of short-term tourism-oriented experiences and curricula that prioritizes Western perspectives. A needs assessment consisting of student interviews, surveys, and professional consultation demonstrated strong interest in programs that combine language learning, cultural immersion, and career development. Findings also highlighted the importance of financial accessibility, reciprocal host partnerships, and ongoing advising support. Drawing on Freire’s critical pedagogy and Vygotsky’s sociocultural …

From Deference To Dialogue: How International Gtas From High Power Distance Cultures Adapt To U.S. Classroom Dynamics, Deborah Akua Afi Appiah
Theses and Dissertations
International graduate teaching assistants (GTAs) from high power distance cultures play a significant role in undergraduate education at U.S. universities, yet they face challenges that go well beyond language proficiency. Coming from educational backgrounds where teacher authority is unquestioned and hierarchical, these GTAs must navigate American classrooms that operate on fundamentally different assumptions, where authority is earned rather than assumed, informality is the norm, and students expect to question, negotiate, and be personally known by their instructors. The present study examined how eighteen (18) international GTAs from seven (7) high power distance countries perceived and adapted to these differences while …

Transforming Florida Chemistry Education: Exploring Information Literacy Strategies From Singapore, Han N. Le
Transforming Florida Chemistry Education: Exploring Information Literacy Strategies From Singapore, Han N. Le
Honors Undergraduate Theses
This study explores the applicability of Singapore’s information literacy (IL) strategies within Central Floridian higher education environments. Singapore’s national IL framework, supported by its Ministry of Education, integrates information and communication technology (ICT), professional development, and lifelong learning initiatives through a standardized, systemwide approach. In contrast, IL instruction in the United States is largely decentralized, often limited to one-time sessions or elective courses. To investigate the feasibility of adapting Singapore’s practices, surveys were distributed to faculty and librarians across Florida’s twelve public universities, yielding responses that highlighted varying levels of IL integration, limited institutional support, and minimal professional training related …

Priming Students From Confucian-Heritage Culture For Success: Lessons From Music Pedagogy, Amanda Li
2026 Scholarly Teaching Conference: Concurrent Session Papers
Rising to more than 1.1 million in 2024, the number of international students in the United States continues to be a significant portion of the student population in higher education. Although no definitive number is readily available, anecdotal and my personal teaching experiences suggest that a sizable number of international students studying music in the United States are Chinese-native speakers from Confucian Heritage Cultures (CHC).
Much of the literature on Chinese international students is non-discipline specific, treating them as a homogenous whole. These students’ challenges and coping strategies are commonly categorized into language- and culture-related issues, which are inevitably intertwined. …

Guided by Schlossberg’s Transition Theory (1981) and Schlossberg’s Mattering and Marginality Theory (1989), this study examined the challenges international students face, the support strategies implemented by International Student Office Directors, and the institutional factors influencing student adjustment and well-being. International students experience challenges related to housing and logistical adjustment, financial and immigration-related stressors, academic system adjustment and self-advocacy, and social integration and emotional adjustment. Proactive and holistic support approaches, including pre-arrival communication, orientation programs, academic support, emotional support, and …
Awareness, Empathy, Action: How American Students’ Study Abroad Experiences In The Middle East And North Africa (Mena) Influence Self-Perceptions Of Global Citizenship, Renee Lamb
Theses and Dissertations
Internationally minded practitioners and academics have posited for decades that global citizenship could be a tool the world can use to build a stronger and more sustainably minded global culture. Through global citizenship’s inclusion in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, Target 4: Quality Education, educators from pre-primary to university have been put at the forefront of this movement. At the higher education level, study abroad is arguably the most important global learning tool used by American institutions today for building global citizenship. However, the vast majority of American students study abroad in Western Europe, leaving a glaring gap in …

Establishing Evidence Of Intercultural Competence As Learning Outcomes Of Outbound Student Mobility Programs For Undergraduate Participants, Hiroyoshi Hiratsuka
Journal of Comparative & International Higher Education
Outbound student mobility programs are instrumental to Japan’s higher education policy. However, the national policy discourse among the stakeholders tended to overlook evidence when the literature review identified a gap. This study intended to fill this evidence gap by uncovering evidence of intercultural competence as a learning outcome of outbound mobility programs. This study is a theory-driven qualitative method to establish students’ learning outcomes as a part of GSC’s degree requirements to participate in studies in Malaysia and Thailand. This qualitative analysis confirmed cultural self-awareness and related intercultural competence domains as learning outcomes of this outbound student mobility program in …

Academic Dishonesty In Higher Education, Nitza Davidovitch, Aleksandra Gerkerovaa, Ruth Dorota
Journal of Comparative & International Higher Education
Academic dishonesty has become a pervasive issue among students, often driven by environmental and social pressures and facilitated by opportunities such as the use of digital devices (e.g., smartwatches) that enable misconduct. The aim of the current study was to examine the associations between academic dishonesty and variables including class attendance, self-efficacy, and the use of digital learning methods. It was hypothesized that academic dishonesty would increase with higher absenteeism, lower self-efficacy, and greater reliance on Zoom lectures and exams. This study was conducted at a single academic institution in Israel, based on an anonymous structured survey completed by 121 …

The Well-Being Of International Doctoral Students—What Does It Look Like, What Affects It, And How Can We Support It?, Sean Nicholas, Pinjia Chan, Ivana Chan
Journal of Comparative & International Higher Education
There are multiple reviews on the well-being of international students and doctoral students, but to our knowledge, none on the well-being of international doctoral students. We undertook a scoping review to understand the state of well-being of international doctoral students, the factors that affect it, and the strategies that support it. We searched PsycInfo, EBSCO, Scopus, and ERIC for full-text, peer-reviewed articles published in English from 2003–2023. Fourteen studies were included in our scoping review. These studies suggest that international doctoral students report relatively low well-being in terms of negative emotions, attitudes toward the self, and social relationships. Their well-being …
