The Development Of A Content Analysis Model For Assessing Students’ Cognitive Learning In Asynchronous Online Discussions, Dazhi Yang, Jennifer C. Richardson, Brian F. French, James D. Lehman Feb 2011

The Development Of A Content Analysis Model For Assessing Students’ Cognitive Learning In Asynchronous Online Discussions, Dazhi Yang, Jennifer C. Richardson, Brian F. French, James D. Lehman

Educational Technology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a content analysis model for assessing students' cognitive learning in asynchronous online discussions. It adopted a fully mixed methods design, in which qualitative and quantitative methods were employed sequentially for data analysis and interpretation. Specifically, the design was a "sequential exploratory" (QUAL→ quan) design with priority given to qualitative data and methods. Qualitative data were 800 online postings collected in two online courses. Quantitative data were 803 online postings from the same two courses but from different discussion topics and different weeks. During the qualitative process, a grounded theory approach …

Virtual Movie Sets And Branching Video: Developing Interactive Educational Machinima With Second Life And Youtube, Chareen Snelson Apr 2010

Virtual Movie Sets And Branching Video: Developing Interactive Educational Machinima With Second Life And Youtube, Chareen Snelson

Educational Technology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Machinima is the technique of using real-time 3D technologies such as computer games or virtual worlds in the creation of animated video productions. The Second Life virtual world provides an open landscape where inexpensive virtual movie sets, props, costumes, and characters may be created to meet specialized educational purposes. Interactive video techniques used to create online video simulations, virtual tours, adventure games, or interactive tutorials can be coupled with machinima to create interactive educational machinima products. YouTube supports this technique by providing both video hosting and the Annotations tool, which enables linking from video to video. Usage and demographic data …

Online Collaborative Learning In A Project-Based Learning Environment In Taiwan: A Case Study On Undergraduate Students’ Perspectives, Ke Zhang, Shiang Wuu Peng, Jui-Long Hung Jun 2009

Online Collaborative Learning In A Project-Based Learning Environment In Taiwan: A Case Study On Undergraduate Students’ Perspectives, Ke Zhang, Shiang Wuu Peng, Jui-Long Hung

Educational Technology Faculty Publications and Presentations

This case study investigated undergraduate students’ first experience in online collaborative learning in a project-based learning (PBL) environment in Taiwan. Data were collected through interviews of 48 students, instructor’s field notes, researchers' online observations, students’ online discourse and group artifacts. The findings revealed interesting phenomena as results of cultural influences as well as educational system impacts. Students experienced first handed various learning benefits of PBL in the intensive six-week period, yet voiced serious concerns about the changed role of the instructor, as well as strong reservations on peer collaboration as a result of the competitive tradition in education. Obviously, online …

From Silent Film To Youtube™ : Tracing The Historical Roots Of Motion Picture Technologies In Education, Chareen Snelson, Ross A. Perkins Apr 2009

From Silent Film To Youtube™ : Tracing The Historical Roots Of Motion Picture Technologies In Education, Chareen Snelson, Ross A. Perkins

Educational Technology Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article traces the historical roots of YouTube™ and online video to examine it within the context of educational motion picture history. The current state of online video is discussed first followed by a thematic analysis of the history of educational motion pictures from silent film to YouTube. The historical literature reveals recurring themes and issues, which include: (1) the intrinsic advantages of motion picture technologies, (2) differing opinions about the benefits of film and video, and (3) access and equipment issues. Previous historical accounts fall short of addressing how these themes connect to online video. The potential future of …

Revealing Online Learning Behaviors And Activity Patterns And Making Predictions With Data Mining Techniques In Online Teaching, Jui-Long Hung, Ke Zhang Dec 2008

Revealing Online Learning Behaviors And Activity Patterns And Making Predictions With Data Mining Techniques In Online Teaching, Jui-Long Hung, Ke Zhang

Educational Technology Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study was conducted with data mining (DM) techniques to analyze various patterns of online learning behaviors, and to make predictions on learning outcomes. Statistical models and machine learning DM techniques were conducted to analyze 17,934 server logs to investigate 98 undergraduate students’ learning behaviors in an online business course in Taiwan. The study scientifically identified students’ behavioral patterns and preferences in the online learning processes, differentiated active and passive learners, and found important parameters for performance prediction. The results also demonstrated how data mining techniques might be utilized to help improve online teaching and learning with suggestions for online …

Challenges And Questions Concerning “Culturally-Sensitive Design”, Ross Perkins Nov 2008

Challenges And Questions Concerning “Culturally-Sensitive Design”, Ross Perkins

Educational Technology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Since the inception of the field of anthropology, scholars have debated the definition for the word "culture." Lonner and Adamapoulos (1997) note that "there are 200 or more definitions of 'culture' in the literature of the social sciences, not one of which has been embraced by a substantial number of social scientists" (p. 76). Strauss and Quinn (1997) provide an overview of four schools of thought regarding the interpretations of "culture":

"Geertzian interpretivists have stressed the publicness of meaning, cognition, and culture. Foucauldian postmodernists have argued for the constructedness of culture and of the self. Some contemporary historical materialists highlight …

Computer-Based Instruction And Cognitive Load, Jui-Long Hung, Brandon Randolph-Seng, Kittikunanant Monsicha, Steven M. Crooks Jan 2008

Computer-Based Instruction And Cognitive Load, Jui-Long Hung, Brandon Randolph-Seng, Kittikunanant Monsicha, Steven M. Crooks

Educational Technology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Following cognitive load theory, we used a computer-based software training paradigm to determining the optimal number of steps or information chunks to present before practice opportunities. Results demonstrating that the size of information chunks presented and the type of practice used individually influenced participants' ability to effectively learn via computer-based instruction. These findings contribute to the literature by showing the importance of practice and optimal segment sizes for learning via a computer.

Micro-Level Design For Multimedia-Enhanced Online Courses, Chareen Snelson, Patt Elison-Bowers Dec 2007

Micro-Level Design For Multimedia-Enhanced Online Courses, Chareen Snelson, Patt Elison-Bowers

Educational Technology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Micro-level instructional design refers to the practice of designing and producing small units of instruction. At the microlevel processes such as shifting focus to small-scale design, applying learning theory, managing the technology, and evaluating the micro-design are implemented. The shift in focus to small-scale design centers attention on design of the multimedia products implemented in the online classroom. Theories of multimedia learning are selected and applied to the micro-level design to maximize the potential for effective instructional communication and learning. Managing the technology involves accounting for issues of compression, file size, and appropriate format for Web-based delivery. Evaluation, supported by …

Virtual Design Based Research, Chareen Snelson

Educational Technology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Instructional materials for the online course may be designed with rich multimedia content and innovative approaches. Student engagement with these materials is unseen and left to be inferred. Design based research is an approach used to study intervention in the context of an authentic classroom. It can be applied to the online course to study the impact of instructional design decisions and the effectiveness of multimedia integration. The technology used to support the online course can be used to collect usage data and participant evaluations.
