Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications
Although the benefits of using video as a learning tool in Extension programs are well known, less is understood about effective methods for creating videos. We present a five-step procedure for developing educational videos that focus on evidence-based practices, and we provide practical examples from our use of the five steps in creating a video series for an Extension program. Through the effective development of videos, Extension professionals can organize and present information in a meaningful way.
Using video media can be a successful way to demonstrate best practices, but there has been limited guidance for how to develop such …

Using Argument-Based Science Inquiry To Improve Science Achievement For Students With Disabilities In Inclusive Classrooms, Jonte C. Taylor, Ching-Mei Tseng, Angelique Murillo, William Therrien, Brian Hand
Journal of Science Education for Students with Disabilities
Students with disabilities have long lagged behind their non-disabled peers when it comes to science achievement. The increased emphasis on STEM related careers and the use of science in everyday life makes learning science content and concepts critical for all students especially for those with disabilities. As suggested by the National Resource Council (2012), more emphasis is being placed on being able to critically think about science concepts in and outside of the classroom. Additionally, the Next Generation Science Standards are asking teachers and students to better understand how science is connected to the everyday world through the use of …

Online Educational Outcomes Could Exceed Those Of The Traditional Classroom, Elliot King
Online Educational Outcomes Could Exceed Those Of The Traditional Classroom, Elliot King
The Emerging Learning Design Journal
An axiom of online education is that teachers should not mechanically translate existing courses into an online format. If so, how should new or ongoing courses be reshaped for the online environment and why? The answers come both from the opportunities offered by the structure of online education and from a body of research from cognitive psychology and cognitive science that provides insight into the way people actually learn. Freed from the time and space constraints inherent in face-to-face higher education settings as well as the deeply ingrained expectations of both teachers and students, online education provides a more flexible …

Designing For Technology Enhanced Activity To Support Learning, Joshua A. Danish
Designing For Technology Enhanced Activity To Support Learning, Joshua A. Danish
The Emerging Learning Design Journal
One of the perennial challenges in implementing and designing educational technologies is adapting to local contexts. Activity theory has the potential to address this challenge but has not seen widespread adoption due to its complexity. To address this, I suggest a simplified design heuristic for using activity theory to attend to contextual issues when implementing educational technologies. I then present two examples of this heuristic in use. First, I describe the BeeSign software, which was created to help early elementary students engage in complex systems thinking. Second, I describe the design of an online forum intended to foster authentic problem …

Phonics Instruction has had a controversial history. How to teach phonics to Spanish-speaking ELs is also controversial. Understanding the differences between Spanish and English and how phonics instruction occurs in each language would be insightful. Also, knowing how the nature of the two languages affects instruction would be beneficial. Furthermore, exploiting similarities between English and Spanish and examining differences will bolster instruction. This paper will discuss the reasons for word study and how it may be utilized to teach spelling and decoding to Spanish-speaking ELLs.
