See It & Believe It (Assessing Professional Behaviors & Clinical Reasoning with Video Assignments)

Olive Branch

Grace Johnson (UNMC), Megan Frazee (UNMC)

Professional behaviors and clinical reasoning skills are developed through repetition, modeling and multiple exposures. We developed video assignments in physical therapy education that allow students to integrate didactic knowledge into clinical cases. These assignments require students to demonstrate appropriate professional behaviors, psychomotor skills and clinical reasoning required for physical therapy patient management. For all video assignments, students are required to upload their videos into Canvas, view the work of their peers and provide constructive feedback. These video assignments …

Exploring The Effects Of Pacing In Community College Courses, Robin Dillon Shepherd Apr 2018

Exploring The Effects Of Pacing In Community College Courses, Robin Dillon Shepherd

STEMPS Theses & Dissertations

For-profit colleges are threatening community college enrollments by recruiting low-income and minority students with the appeal of quick degree and certificate program completion rates. To remain competitive, community colleges are creating guided pathways for student success. A guided pathway is a clear road map to certificate or degree completion. Community colleges that offer guided pathways challenge students to choose an academic program in their first semester and no later than their second semester. Once students choose their academic program they begin taking specific classes in pursuit of certificate and degree completion, which offer students flexibility in format (face-to-face, hybrid, and …

Reimagining The Chalk Talk: Animated Handwriting As A Social Cue To Improve Motivation In Multimedia Video Lessons, Hillary C. Kaplowitz Apr 2018

Reimagining The Chalk Talk: Animated Handwriting As A Social Cue To Improve Motivation In Multimedia Video Lessons, Hillary C. Kaplowitz

STEMPS Theses & Dissertations

Animated handwriting in multimedia video lessons, such as those popularized by the Khan Academy, has reimagined the classic teaching technique of writing on a chalkboard while lecturing for online delivery. This digital chalk talk effect mimics classroom lectures where words are written letter by letter on a chalkboard as they are spoken. Low-cost applications, tablets, and document cameras allow instructors at all levels to easily create their own animated handwritten videos. As adoption increases, it is important to understand the effects of this strategy.

This study employed a true experimental, between-subjects, posttest design that compared multimedia lessons with different text …

Using Argument-Based Science Inquiry To Improve Science Achievement For Students With Disabilities In Inclusive Classrooms, Jonte C. Taylor, Ching-Mei Tseng, Angelique Murillo, William Therrien, Brian Hand Feb 2018

Using Argument-Based Science Inquiry To Improve Science Achievement For Students With Disabilities In Inclusive Classrooms, Jonte C. Taylor, Ching-Mei Tseng, Angelique Murillo, William Therrien, Brian Hand

Journal of Science Education for Students with Disabilities

Students with disabilities have long lagged behind their non-disabled peers when it comes to science achievement. The increased emphasis on STEM related careers and the use of science in everyday life makes learning science content and concepts critical for all students especially for those with disabilities. As suggested by the National Resource Council (2012), more emphasis is being placed on being able to critically think about science concepts in and outside of the classroom. Additionally, the Next Generation Science Standards are asking teachers and students to better understand how science is connected to the everyday world through the use of …

Rethinking Visual Communication Curriculum: The Success Of Emporium Style, Adam Wagler, Katie Krcmarik, Alan Eno

Innovation in Pedagogy and Technology Symposium

The College of Journalism and Mass Communications faced challenges with budget and faculty resources causing a bottleneck, in the beginning, visual communications courses for the College. In the fall of 2016, a solution was implemented in the form of an emporium style teaching model, where students can seek help on projects and collaborate with peers on projects. The program is the first-of-its-kind giving students experience with the technologies and techniques needed to be powerful and effective storytellers. Students leverage the technology they use in their daily lives to solve real-world problems, with the help of faculty available in a learning …

Cybersecurity Threats & Challenges, Jr Nobles

Innovation in Pedagogy and Technology Symposium

Cyberattacks have brought a paradigm shift in how we secure & protect information. Today, NATO ranks attacks from phishing & malware among their greatest concerns. These attacks are attractive to hackers, who find them to be cheap, hard to track, and even harder to attribute. As budgets rise and fall, awareness of cyber threats and challenges has never been more critical. Theft of intellectual property, loss of research, and attacks on the reputation of the University are among the challenges managed by our team. Join the UNL Information Security team for a talk about today’s cyber threats and how they …

Enhancing The Quality Of Online Teaching Via Collaborative Course Development, B. Jean Mandernach, Steve Mcgahan Jan 2018

Enhancing The Quality Of Online Teaching Via Collaborative Course Development, B. Jean Mandernach, Steve Mcgahan

Innovation in Pedagogy and Technology Symposium

Collaborative course development offers a host of opportunities for academic departments to ensure consistency, maximize resource allocation, and increase scalability of online course offerings. By utilizing a collective design model, a team of content experts (i.e., department faculty), curriculum specialists, instructional designers, and instructional technologists can collaborate to develop dynamic online courses that can be taught by multiple instructors over successive terms. The key to a successful collaborative course design lies in an increased up-front investment of time and resources to ensure a well-designed course that aligns learning objectives, instructional content, activities, and assessments in a manner that is uniquely …

Employing Word Study With Spanish-Speaking Els, Timothy Rodriquez Jan 2018

Employing Word Study With Spanish-Speaking Els, Timothy Rodriquez

ECTESOL Review

Phonics Instruction has had a controversial history. How to teach phonics to Spanish-speaking ELs is also controversial. Understanding the differences between Spanish and English and how phonics instruction occurs in each language would be insightful. Also, knowing how the nature of the two languages affects instruction would be beneficial. Furthermore, exploiting similarities between English and Spanish and examining differences will bolster instruction. This paper will discuss the reasons for word study and how it may be utilized to teach spelling and decoding to Spanish-speaking ELLs.

Context-Focused Grammar Teaching: A Comparison Between English Present Perfect And Past Tenses And Affects On Korean English Learning, Seungheui (Ellie) Lee

ECTESOL Review

Despite massive amounts of time Korean English Learners (KLL) study English grammar, they continue to have problems becoming proficient in verb tenses, especially the present perfect. This study examines this problem through a linguistic comparative analysis of Korean and English present perfect and past tenses. Two possible reasons for KLL difficulty with verb tenses could be mode of instruction and L1 interference.

The study was conducted as part of the requirements of doctoral program in Instructional Design and Development at a public university in the southeastern United States. Using a qualitative case study approach, the study demonstrates that there are cultural similarities between mainland China and Taiwan, however instructors should also be aware of the differences when developing relationships with students and developing course content. A mini-workshop was developed for the study to help teach instructors about the two cultures. However, the mini-workshop …

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship

The Metaliteracy Badging System, collaboratively produced by educators from across the State University of New York (SUNY), has undergone several trials and transformations. Over the course of this iterative journey, this resource has served in often-unexpected ways as a flexible educational tool that facilitates meaningful curriculum design and collaborative teaching. This chapter provides an overview of the design and implementation of the system, along with our challenges and goals moving forward. Just as we teach our students to fail better, we too have drawn on our setbacks as opportunities for growth and improvement.
