Ontario's education system aims to improve children's literacy levels who hail from diverse backgrounds. Schools must tailor their program layout to their students’ unique needs. Immersion is one of them. As with submersion, instruction occurs in the second language (L2), but there are significant differences. ESL students experience linguistic barriers. According to Migration Matters (June 2017), by 2022, 78% of job openings will require some post-secondary training or university degree. Many immigrants do not have the skills necessary to succeed, and these percentages have not improved. There is a widening incongruence between the complexity of the needs of ESL learners …

An Investigation Into The Effects Of Covid-Related School Policies On The Teaching And Learning Of English As A Second Or Foreign Language, Gordon Moulden

Teaching Culturally and Linguistically Diverse International Students in Open or Online Learning Environments: A Research Symposium

The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of COVID-related campus access restrictions on the teaching and learning of English as a second or additional language. A mixed-methods survey of ESL teachers, followed by optional structured interviews, was chosen as the research design. Results showed that the requirement to move instruction wholly, or partially, to an online format created emotional and cognitive hardships for students, but a rich professional-development opportunity for teachers as they dealt with the challenges of online instruction. A Study Of Teacher Talking Time And Student Talking Time Practices Among Esl Instructors At An Intensive English Program, Cesar R. Bazo Quintana


This study focuses on Teacher Talking Time (TTT) and Student Talking Time (STT) practices among ESL instructors at an Intensive English Program in a southeastern public research university. Based on a qualitative case study approach, the study demonstrates that participating ESL instructors were oriented more towards TTT practices while teaching their regular lessons. The study found disproportionate use of TTT. The study has helped participant ESL instructors become more aware of the behaviors that are conducive to both increased TTT and increased STT practices in their classes. This practicum design helps future ESL/EFL instructors gain practical understanding of Teacher Talking Time (TTT) and Student Talking Time (STT) practices in the classroom. It provides a deeper understanding of TTT vs. STT application within the Communicative Approach (CA) or Communicative Language Teaching (CLT).
