Reinhardt of the University of Washington will also interact with students and faculty during his two day visit.

The concert will be directed by Steve Reineke, a noted composer of band music and arranger for the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra. He will work with a local middle school band, a local high school band, and the UMaine Concert Band to present a benefit concert for the public. Last year, Cultural Affairs helped bring Mr. Reineke to Maine, and his visit was so well received that we are asking him to return.

Similarly in the Spring 2003 Visiting Artist lecturer Series, the Department of Art intends to span the range of departmental interests and activities. Experts in diverse fields will be on-campus this spring, providing stimulating and cutting-edge points of view and practice in fields ranging from learners at-risk to Installation Art and ceramic sculpture, a new Department area at the University of Maine. For this reason, the Art Department is requesting funds to support "Natural Resources," an exhibition of paintings by University of Maine alumni Charles Yoder. Mr. Yoder's recent works are paintings of trees, created in his studio from manipulated photographs. His paintings have been described as deceptively simple, widely accessible, thought-provoking and mysterious. Essayist Howard McCalebb points out: "Yoder's paintings remind us that it may be time for us to slow down and think about....where we are going. The programming for the fall semester began in mid-September (with capacity audiences of 70 people) and will consist of ten events by semester's end:The Series is fortunate to be hosting a diverse array of emergent and established writers, with poets from Nigeria (Chinyere Grace Okafor), Jamaica (Mark McMorris), Australia (John Tranter), Canada (Robin Blaser) and Israel (Benjamin Hollander) joining multicultural American writers like Brian Kim Stefans (Korean American) and Mexican American (Roberto Tejada).

On Monday, November 4, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences of the University of Maine will present a lecture entitled "From Wagner to Hitler: Anti-Semitism and Culture in Germany." The speaker will be Gottfried Wagner, great grandson of the composer Richard Wagner and will be jointly sponsored by the School of Performing Arts and the Departments of History and Modern languages and Classics. A reception sponsored by the Holocaust Human Rights Center of Maine will follow. The lecture will take place ln Room 100 of Donald P. Corbett Business Building and there is no admission fee.

The Rimers of Eldritch is Marcia Douglas's selection for spring 2003. Born in Lebanon, Missouri, in '1934, playwright Landford Wilson tackles the closed-mindedness of small towns. In 1965, Wilson. who has been compared_with Tennessee Williams, William lnge and Lillian Hellman, wrote Eldritch about a murder in a town of that name. In it, he senses the rhythm of Bible Belt America, with its capability for the vicious, despite its moralism.

The concert, scheduled for April at Maine Center for the Arts, attracts close to 600 people to campus for the event. This year, the Old Town Middle School and Hampden Academy have already agreed to participate and they have each comm¡tted $700 to offset expenses. The University of Maine Black Bear Men's Chorus (BBC) was established this past September. There are currently 25 members in the group, representing UMaine students, faculty and staff as well as individuals from the surrounding community. The BBC operates under the auspices of the School of Performing Arts (Prof. Dennis Cox, Director of Choral Activities). However, the group does not yet receive departmental funding and is not a for-credit class. Dr. Banks will not be performing himself, but his works will be performed by soloists from around the state as well as from St. Mary's church and SPA's Athena Consort. He will be present to act as consultant during preparations. The final concerts will occur in two locations: Minsky Recital Hall and at St. Mary's Church. We are requesting funding only for the Minsky Hall concert. We were thrilled to learn that Dr. Banks is honoring the occasion by composing a new piece of music to be performed as a world premiere at the concert in Minsky Recital Hall.

From September 2002 to May 2003, the Hudson Museum will feature Snowshoes: A Gift from Gluskabe. This exhibit will feature over 30 pairs of Northeastern Native American snowshoes,ranging from Ojibway, Huron, and Cree to Penobscot, Micmac and Passamaquoddy examples. Snowshoes were integral to the lifeways of Native Peoples of the Northeast. Today, snowshoeing is a popular winter recreational sport. For Native Peoples the ability to make and use snowshoes was a life skill-passed down by family members from one generation to the next.

I am writing on behalf of the English Department and the National Poetry Foundation to request the Committee's assistance in continuing the New Writing Series established in the spring of 2000. The $50ffi I am requesting for the spring semester of 2002 represents less than one half of the Series's operating budget (approximately $10,580, not including social events); the remainder of the required funding will be provided by the English Departmenfs Lloyd H. Elliott fund and by several small contributions made by other departments.
