Seventeen students were initiated into the Kappa Delta Pi honor society for aspiring teachers during a recent ceremony at the University of Maine. To be eligible for membership in Kappa Delta Pi, students must have reached their junior year with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 and, in addition to scholarship, demonstrate leadership and commitment to education.

The concert will be directed by Steve Reineke, a noted composer of band music and arranger for the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra. He will work with a local middle school band, a local high school band, and the UMaine Concert Band to present a benefit concert for the public. Last year, Cultural Affairs helped bring Mr. Reineke to Maine, and his visit was so well received that we are asking him to return.

Don’t be confused by Sharon Versyp’s personable demeanor and easy-going smile. Behind that exterior is a fiercely intense competitor who has worked hard and enjoyed success at every stop in her playing and professional career.
This made her first season as a head coach all the more challenging. Versyp took over an inexperienced squad that was further weakened by team injuries and departures. After being selected sixth in the preseason coaches poll, she led her team, made of just eight players at the end of the 2001-2002 campaign, to a respectable fourth-place finish.

University/School Partners Receive Grant To Expand Alternative Teacher Certification Project, Kay Hyatt

A $1.035 million U.S. Department of Education grant will allow the University of Maine to expand its innovative alternative teacher certification program to Aroostook and Washington counties. Funded over five years, the Transition to Teaching grant is based on the success and promise of the model developed and piloted by the UMaine College of Education and Human Development in partnership with the Mid-Coast Superintendents' Association, comprised of school districts from Searsport to Bath.

The University of Maine’s Fogler Library in partnership with the Bagaduce Music Lending Library and the Bangor Public Library received a two-year, $344,270 federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) grant to design and implement an interactive, multimedia digital music library of images of scores with associated sound renditions, cover art, and lyrics. The University of Maine’s Franco-American Center will host meetings October 4 [2002] to promote ties between the Conseil de la Vie Française en Amérique (Council for French Life in America), or CVFA, and Franco-Americans in Maine. At 2 p.m., the Center’s community council will meet at Crossland Hall with the CVFA administrative board, and Franco-Americans from throughout the state will meet with the board during a reception from 4 to 7 p.m.

For this reason, the Art Department is requesting funds to support "Natural Resources," an exhibition of paintings by University of Maine alumni Charles Yoder. Mr. Yoder's recent works are paintings of trees, created in his studio from manipulated photographs. His paintings have been described as deceptively simple, widely accessible, thought-provoking and mysterious. On Monday, November 4, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences of the University of Maine will present a lecture entitled "From Wagner to Hitler: Anti-Semitism and Culture in Germany." The speaker will be Gottfried Wagner, great grandson of the composer Richard Wagner and will be jointly sponsored by the School of Performing Arts and the Departments of History and Modern languages and Classics. A reception sponsored by the Holocaust Human Rights Center of Maine will follow. The lecture will take place ln Room 100 of Donald P. Corbett Business Building and there is no admission fee.

UMaine’s biggest weakness in 2001-02 was pretty glaring, and it didn’t take long for opponents to see it. A lack of guards due to unexpected off-season losses and injuries. Head Coach Dr. John Giannini believes he and his staff addressed that issue as they head into 2002-03 with backcourt depth to go with the nucleus of a team that reached the America East Championship game last season.

Head Coach Rick Filighera, 35, enters his sixth season at the helm of the Black Bears women’s ice hockey program, and eighth as a headcoach. Filighera, who was announced as the first head coach of the University of Maine varsity women’s ice hockey team in September 1997, has a record of 62-72-10 in five seasons at Maine and an overall record of 86-81-12 in eight seasons of head coaching. Filighera’s record of 24-9-2 in two seasons at Rochester Institute of Technology, combined with his record at Maine, ranks him 11th among college coaches in career wins.
