Charles C. Chapman College Lectures
This is a revised version of a speech with the same name. In it Chapman uses the metaphor of a shepherd and his flock to describe the ideal relationship between a minister and his congregation. He says that pastors must be active in managing their flock and be willing to go out of their way to save a "lost sheep". A minister should also call on his members at home and make a great effort to have a personal connection to each and every one.

Augustinian Approach To Holistic Christian Pedagogy, Adam Schultz, Neal Deroo
Augustinian Approach To Holistic Christian Pedagogy, Adam Schultz, Neal Deroo
Faculty Work Comprehensive List
Presenters explain how in their CORE philosophy class they seek to demonstrate that their students' real life-spiritual life distinction is symptomatic of a dualism endemic to contemporary Christianity (section 1), and that their reading of Augustine's Confessions can provide a unified and holistic corrective to it (section 2) and that doing so helps students see a more radical vision of Christian faithfulness, one that calls for a holistic, life-wide response to the work of Christ that will not allow for an easy distinction between ‘spiritual’ life and everyday life (section 3).
When God Smites: Talking With Students About The Violence Of God In Scripture, Eric A. Seibert
When God Smites: Talking With Students About The Violence Of God In Scripture, Eric A. Seibert
Bible & Religion Educator Scholarship
This article emphasizes the need for religious educators to address the issue of divine violence in Scripture with students, and it offers various pedagogical strategies for doing so. The focus is on violent Old Testament texts, with special attention given to the issue of Canaanite genocide. A general framework for structuring class time around divine violence in Scripture is proposed which includes (1) encouraging students to encounter violent biblical texts firsthand, (2) helping them understand why people find these passages problematic, and (3) offering various options for dealing with the potential problems these passages raise. In the second half of …

In 2011, the Seattle Pacific University Library established a new service area for students called the Tech Desk. Initially conceived as a place where students could get help with and access to technologies needed for academic work, this program quickly became an incubator for ideas and innovations around meeting students’ technological needs. In 2014, we surveyed our largely “millennial” undergraduate population to assess the program and explore ways of enhancing it. Results from this survey, which are consistent with other research that complicates the notion of “digital natives,” revealed that our students desire and need help thinking about the role …

How Can Catholic Higher Education Help K-12 Catholic Schools And School Systems Prepare For And Maximize Participation In Parental Choice Programs? (A Reflection On The 2013 Catholic Higher Education Collaborative Conference On Catholic School Financing), Susan M. Ferguson
Center for Catholic Education Publications
Dr. Lee Shulman reminded those of us participating in the Catholic Higher Education Collaborative Conference of 2013 that some issues are intractable. Financing Catholic education for all who desire this gift seems to be just such a difficult and complex issue. However, offering hope and assurance for progress in issues of finance, Dr. Shulman also noted advances made, both in furthering scholarly work and in raising the bar for excellence in Catholic schools since the inaugural CHEC Conference in 2007. For example, Dr. Shulman highlighted meta-analyses of research connected to outcomes for students graduated from and currently attending Catholic education …

Brigid's Peace: An Examination Of The Influences Of The Catholic Intellectual Tradition On One Writer's Creative Work, Marie A. Hulme
Presidential Seminar on the Catholic Intellectual Tradition
The genesis of my novel, Brigid’s Peace, which I began in the spring of 2013 coinciding with my studies in the Presidential Seminar, was an interest in examining the need for luminosity, for transcendence, for beauty in the face of dark despair and evil. My work centers on the story of an Irish Catholic family living in Belfast, Northern Ireland during the time of sectarian conflict known as “the troubles,” but more specifically on the impact of events related to that time on one young woman, Brigid Donegan, an artist and one of seven sisters. Through a close, third person …

Peace Under Pressure: Portraits Of Christian Leadership In College Basketball Coaches, Charles Henry Wilson Jr.
Peace Under Pressure: Portraits Of Christian Leadership In College Basketball Coaches, Charles Henry Wilson Jr.
Doctoral Dissertations
NCAA Division I college basketball coaching is a high-stakes, high-reward profession. This study is based on three premises: (a) there is increasing pressure on college basketball coaches to win immediately and win consistently; (b) coaches are expected to maintain their integrity; (c) the pressure to win immediately and win consistently can influence some coaches to compromise their integrity. Given that context, the purpose of this study was to investigate and illuminate the lived experience of Christian head men’s and women’s basketball coaches at public, NCAA Division I institutions. This study was guided by two guiding research questions: (a) What is …
