"The most immediate question that needs to be addressed is pedagogical: how can we continue to teach in the GPT Age?...Beyond the questions of pedagogical best practices, GPT-3 raises deeper philosophical and pragmatic questions about the nature and purpose of higher education."
Logistics Of Mathematical Modeling-Focused Projects, R. Corban Harwood
Logistics Of Mathematical Modeling-Focused Projects, R. Corban Harwood
Faculty Publications - Department of Mathematics
Projects provide tangible connections to course content and can motivate students to learn at a deeper level. This article focuses on the implementation of projects in both lower and upper division math courses which develop and analyze mathematical models of a problem based upon known data and real-life situations. Logistical pitfalls and insights are highlighted as well as several key implementation resources. Student feedback demonstrate a positive correlation between the use of projects and an enhanced understanding of the course topics when the impact of logistics is reduced. Best practices learned over the years are given along with example project …

Introducing Machine Learning Via Baseball's Hall Of Fame, David Hansen
Faculty Publications - Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
Machine Learning via Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) is often introduced in a one-semester course on Artificial Intelligence. Baseball’s annual Hall of Fame election provides a simple, tractable, data-rich domain for learning how to use ANNs for predictive analytics. We describe how we use the Fast Artificial Neural Network (FANN) toolkit for a course assignment that predicts which players are likely to be elected to Baseball’s Hall of Fame.
Paperless Subjective Programming Assignment Assessment: A First Step, David Hansen
Paperless Subjective Programming Assignment Assessment: A First Step, David Hansen
Faculty Publications - Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
A significant component of student evaluation includes the objective and subjective assessment of programming assignments. We describe bits and pieces of a paperless electronic workflow we’ve recently used to provide objective and subjective feedback to students, emphasizing the tools and process used to provide subjective programming assignment assessment. We identify opportunities for future work to complete an end-to-end paperless electronic workflow that incorporates subjective assessment.
A Sin Of Omission: Database Transactions, David Hansen
A Sin Of Omission: Database Transactions, David Hansen
Faculty Publications - Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
Database courses are under increasing pressure to include new topics which inevitably leads to a decision about which topics are essential to the course and which can be omitted to make room for others. Recent surveys have indicated that many instructors are reducing or eliminating coverage of “transaction management” from their introductory database courses. As both an academic and a practitioner, I believe that this is a mistake. This paper discusses why the semantics of transaction management should be an integral topic in any introductory database management system course.
